1.0 PURPOSE AND SCOPE


To provide a standard procedure for the inspection of the workplace to identify, record and
manage hazards.

2.0 DEFINITIONS
Hazard An energy source which has the potential to cause injury, disease or
dangerous occurrence.

4.0 PROCEDURAL TEXT


Inspections of the workplace shall be carried out to identify:

 Potential hazards that were not anticipated during design or task analysis

 Equipment deficiencies caused through wear, abuse or misuse

 Sub standard work practice

 Hazardous conditions
4.1 Workplace Inspection
The Workplace Manager shall determine the frequency of workplace hazard inspections
which shall not exceed one monthly intervals.
Workplace Hazard inspections shall be carried out by representatives of the Health &
Safety Committee, where in existence, or by persons nominated by the Workplace Manager.
To assist with hazard identification an Inspection Checklist should be developed to suit the
specific hazards likely to be encountered at the workplace.
The inspection results are to be recorded on “Hazard Inspection Report” signed by the
inspection team leader and presented to the Workplace Manager.
The Workplace Manager shall sign off the report when he/she is satisfied that all items on
the report have been actioned to his/her satisfaction.
The signed off report is to be filed at the workplace for audit purposes.
4.2 Statutory Inspections
Government Inspectors are to be given assistance and support in carrying out their duties.
When conducting an inspection or workplace compliance audit a member of the
management staff is to accompany the Inspector.
Should the Inspector identify a hazard or poor work practice, immediate action shall be
taken to remedy the problem. Should it not be possible to rectify the problem concerning
plant or equipment immediately, the offending equipment is to be tagged and taken out of
service.
Should the Inspector issue an improvement or prohibition notice, the Workplace Manager
shall respond to the Inspector in writing giving details and dates relating to the remedial
action to bring about compliance.
A copy of the notice with the response shall be forwarded to the Functional Manager and
Business Unit Safety Manager within 3 days with a copy of such notices forwarded with
the monthly report to the Group Safety Manager.
