Improvement of Batawadi road junction in Tumakuru 2016-2017

INTRODUCTION

Batawadi is the place in the Tumakuru city, where there is

an exit ramp of Bengaluru-Pune highway(NH-48) which
connects to B.H road(NH-206).In this junction,the
vehicles are exiting from NH-48 and moves towards the
Tumakuru city, mess up with the local vehicles that are
moving towards fire station, towards Mahalakshmi Layout
and towards Sabara palya,Siddarameshwara
extension.Due to improper design of roads in this
junction,Batawadi junction has become one of the
blackspot in Tumakuru city where maximum road
accidents occured.Batawadi is the place where highest
number of accident occuring in city limits.
The exit ramp from Bengaluru-Pune highway(NH-48) is
straightly connected to B.H road and in opposite direction
vehicles are moving towards right side of the exit
ramp, some are turn towards right .This give scope for
causing severe accidents and it is difficult and confusing
to drive the vehicles in this spot.
Hence an attempt to improve this junction is made by
providing alternative alignment with traffic signal
erection for safe operation of vehicle.

Bangalore city" and suggested for improvement of junction as:

 Installation of proper sign posts aside the road.

 Improving the sight distance at the intersection by increasing

the set back distances.

 Increasing the signal rest timing by twice to avoid accidents.

Manjunath.K.R and Lohith.R.N worked on "Origin-Destination studies"

A case study of junction improvements in Bangalore city and suggested
remidial measures as:

 Alteration of signal timings during off peak hour period.

 Movement of heavy commerical vehicles should be avoid at

day time and allow at night time.

WORK CARRIED OUT SO FAR

 Visited the project area and identified the causes for

the accidents, movements of traffic directions
prevailing at the junction, losses, point of conflicts.
 Two plans are proposed to the problem araised.

Major causes for the accidents at the junction

 The vehicles exiting from NH-48 and moves towards

the Tumakuru city, mess up with local vehicles
moving towards fire station and with vehicles moving
towards Mahalakshmi layout. Due to this improper
design of roads, many severe accidents occurred.
 Near the Anjaneya temple, heavy commercial
vehicles coming from the Bangalore-Pune highway
to B.H road are crossing this road to reach the APMC
yard. This also gives scope fore causing severe
accident and create confusion while driving the
vehicles.

Points of conflicts
Some conflict points are identified and listed below,
these are the major causes for the sever accidents
continuously occurring at that junction.
1.At the exit from Bengaluru– Pune highway (NH-
48) to B.H road (NH-206)
The exit from the Bengaluru-Pune highway at this
junction is not suitably made, sudden turning is
necessary at the exit, this sudden turning will
reduce the speed of the vehicles. This causes minor
and major accidents at that point.
2.At the intersection of the exit road from Bengaluru-
Pune highway , road towards Mahalakshmi nagar,
road towards fire station and B.H.road.
At the intersection vehicles coming from all the
roads faces the difficulty while crossing the
intersection. This problem is also causing minor
and major accident at that points.
3.At the intersection of B.H road and the road which
provide access to the APMC yard which is on the
right part of the Bengaluru-Pune highway.
The large vehicles carrying goods to the APMC
yard, while coming from B.H. road, it is necessary
to take ‘U’ turn at this intersection, this will cause

increase in the traffic volume and also it is difficult

while for the crossing at this points.

Losses
1.Loss of time:
Since the vehicles are moving in all 3 directions it is
required for the reducing of speed while moving at this
junction, it causes delay for the movements of vehicles.
During peak volume of traffic, it causes overdelay.

2.Loss of fuel:
The traffic volume at this junction is more this will
increase the journey time, and more fuel is consumed
while moving at this junctions because of applying brakes
more times and the vehicles could not move in uniform
speed is uneconomical also.

3.Loss of human:
More traffic volume in all 3 directions at this junction will
cause severe and minor accidents. It may cause the death
or disabilities for the peoples. It is also difficult to the
injured people for the good treatment by paying money to
the hospitals and medicines.

B.E. [Civil Engineering], Dept. of Civil Engineering, SIT, Tumakuru Page 10

4.Increase in casualties:
Due to large traffic volume and the vehicles are moving
towards all the 3 direction it cause severe accidents and
more number of death, disability of body parts will be
occur at this junction.

5.Environmental losses and increase in stress:

Most intensive exposure to air pollution is at this
intersection and noise pollution due to traffic and traffic
congestions.
This also creates stress in the peoples who are moving
through the vehicles at this junction.

Data collection
1.The two intersections at Batawadi are the intersection at
grade which means here all roads which meet at more or
less the same level.
2.These two intersections are unchannalized intersections
which means there is absolutely no restriction to vehicles
to use any part of intersection area.
3.The intersection in front of Mirji petrol bunk is in the
form as shown below and this intersection is
unchannalized intersection at grade and this is the
intersection where more fatal accidents occurred and it is
identified as black spot.

4.The intersection near Anjeneya temple is in the form as

shown below. This intersection is skew unchannelized
intersection at grade. This intersection is also creating
difficulty, confusion and accidents for the vehicles
moving at this junction

Improvement of Batawadi road junction in Tumakuru 2016-2017

1. The entry of exit road is altered so that there is no

difficulty for entering into the exit road from the
highway, but for the existing it is difficult to enter
exit road from the highway smoothly.
2. The alignment of existing exit road is altered, the
existing exit road is blocked and it is aligned
parallel to highway connected to the road which is
moving towards B.H. road(NH-206).
3. The traffic signals are to be installed at the
intersection near the Anjaneya temple.
4. Proper sign boards are to be installed at the places
like exit from the Bengaluru-Pune highway and
near the bridge to turn left so that vehicles can
enter B.H.road without any confusion.
5. Street lights are installed at both the intersection.

Proposed plan -2

B.E. [Civil Engineering], Dept. of Civil Engineering, SIT, Tumakuru Page 16

Improvement of Batawadi road junction in Tumakuru 2016-2017

1.The existing exit from Bengaluru-Pune highway is

blocked.
2.Vehicles are made to move through Belagumba road at
Hanumanthapura circle and crossing through the
M.G.Stadium road and they are entered to B.H. road(NH-
206) at Shivakumara Swamiji circle. Since this circle
facilitated traffic signals there will be no problem at this
intersection.
