Dear Mrs. Davis,

The collection of writing I have compiled into this selection are all different stages of my
writing. Through looking at my writing, you can see my personality and get to know me better.
There are all different kinds of writing in this selection ranging from and acceptance speech I
gave to a book report in my junior english class. I hold these works of writing close to my heart
because they explain what was going through my head during those periods of my life. I believe
the selection I have chosen reflect my writing ability, my writing process, my creativeness, and
gives a little window into my life.

For my first writing example, I wrote this last November right before homecoming at my school.
I wrote this because I had to give an acceptance speech for receiving Maroon Spirit, the highest
honor given to a male students at my school. Writing this speech really made me feel the school
spirit in my town because this is such a time honored tradition in Blackwell, OK. Not to brag, but
I thought I wrote a pretty good acceptance speech but my delivery of it is what was lackluster.
The two assemblies, one only students the other open to the public, were the most people I have
ever talked in front of. It was very nerve racking but I look back fondly at the memory. The
second writing example I chose is a book report I had to write and present in my English class
junior year of high school. The book was called Bleachers. I would say this is probably my
weakest piece of writing I selected. In my defence, this is my earliest writing example I included
to the portfolio and probably why it is such a weak piece. When I wrote this I had a hard time
writing in the proper format, and relating the lessons I learned to my own life. The grammar is
subpar, and this is something I have to work on today. However, I can see an improvement
overtime between my works. Writing example number three is the second to last essay I wrote
while in my Composition I class last semester. It was a persuasive essay calling for the need of
vaccinations for adults and especially kids. It was and is something I am passionate about
because there are diseases that are and should be extinct, killing people and children. In my
opinion this is all because people are choosing to still listen to research that has been proven
false. The essay I feel like was over a good and important topic; however, I feel like the
information could have been presented better. I did not stay on topic as well as I should have.
Also, the grammar is not up to par. Another thing I struggled to do in this essay and the essays I
have written since then is using figurative language, prepositional phrases, and replacing small
words with bigger and more sophisticated words. The final writing example I selected is our
most recent essay I wrote in this class, essay number four. I picked this example because I had
fun writing it and my parents and sister thought it was the best essay I have written thus far in my

writing career. The “This I Believe” topic was intriguing to write. I wrote about the mantra I live
by: You will get nowhere in life without hardwork. I wrote this for the proctored test we did and
I finished it in about a hour and a half. I thought I did well on it but not to the degree of appraisal
I received from my parents and sister. As of the time of writing this I have not gotten a score on
it yet, but I have high hopes for this example. I feel that I did not stay on topic as well as I should
have, but I think I did a great job using the personal examples to help me get my point across.

The previous and current semester are by far one of the biggest spikes in my growth as a writer. I
had to adapt to college writing from high school writing, and it has been a long journey so far. I
know I have an even longer path ahead of me to get to where I am a great writer. As a younger
kid I did not enjoy writing as much as I enjoyed other subjects. In my younger years I struggled
with writer’s block often and it was difficult to transform my thoughts and feelings into words on
a paper. I still occasionally get writer’s block, but not to the degree that it was previously. This is
a prime example of how I have grown as a writer. Many different things have gone into making
me the writer I am today. Having a better understanding of the different types of figurative
languages and the different tools is what I credit a lot of my growth to. Knowing the different
rules of figurative language especially where the figurative language words and or phrases go
best in a sentence are skills that I have felt like I have improved upon and continue to do so.
Writing is not something you can just be good at, it takes trial and error but most importantly
practice.

My writing process is uniform, but also very free flowing. It is uniform by that I look at my
schedule and find open time and tell myself I am going to write my essay so I can get it done. On
the other hand, my process is very free because I write my essays based upon really whatever
comes to mind. I do not hold myself to a lot of rules when writing other than the directions for
the essay I am writing. I hardly ever make diagrams for ideas on a topics and my rough drafts
always are very similar to the finished product. I just sit down and start writing my essay with
whatever comes to mind. About the most pre writing work I do for essays is I think about what
type of essay it needs to be and the topic that I am writing about. As i sit and think about these
things I makes sure that I have a general understanding of what is expected of me. If I had a
writing tool box I would want to keep a paper with examples and the definitions of all the types
of figurative language. I want to include this because I feel like that is an area I struggle with a
lot when writing. Mixing figurative language in my works of writing to give it more detail, to
make it seem more personal, or to better catch the reader's attention and to making it more
entertaining. My development as a writer was slow and for years I thought I was not a good

writer in the slightest. As I got older I began to develop more confidence in not only my writing
but also in myself in general. The more I understand grammar and and all the other tools and
devices that a writer has at their disposal, the better writer I become. My biggest weakness I have
as a writer is that I struggle to put my thoughts and feelings into clear and concise words. A close
second would have to be the lack of use of figurative language to make my works more
interesting. Spelling is also a problem I commonly struggle with but spell check is helpful. I do
not perceive myself as a great writer, I am on par at best but I do think there are a few things I do
pretty well. For example, I think I do a great job at relating to my own life. My fourth writing
example demonstrates this very well and one of the reasons I included it to my portfolio. Another
strength of mine or at least I think, is that I can pick interesting topics that are intriguing for all
and useful. Overall, I would say I have developed my art of writing and I am finally at the point
of not being embarrassed of my writings anymore. I still have a long way to get where I want to
but this is definitely a step in the positive direction.

In conclusion of this class coming to an end, I truly do believe that this class has better prepared
me for writing in college and in life. The past two semesters have been the biggest spike in
growth my writing has seen in a while. I credit this to my previous composition I teacher and
you, Mrs.Davis. I have became a better writer than I thought was possible for myself, but I still
have a long way to go to be where I want in writing. I still struggle with in writing; however, I
feel like there are numerous areas I have improved in over the years. When I first started in my
composition I class, I was nervous that my writing was not on the same level as everyone else. I
was sure to fail. I persevered and kept trying my hardest in every writing assignment throughout
the class. With my determination and hard work I started to notice the growth in my writing
abilities. Anything is obtainable with the right amount of hard work, practice, and persistence.
Now I feel ready for the writing that lays ahead of me in college and the rest of my life. There is
no limit for my potential growth in writing. With the help of this course I more completely
understand and can better use all the tools a writer has. I hope others take on the challenge and
become the best writers they can be.

Sincerely,

Blake Bergman
