2018/2019 Mr. Austin Boyett aboyett@bcbe.org

Course Description
The Fairhope High School Piano Program is designed to serve as a foundation and opportunity to develop
piano skills regardless of prior skill or experience. Class time will be used to explore music theory, music
history, and genre/style, as well as develop self-discipline, concentration, and cooperation. Musical
techniques and performance standards will be demonstrated through repertoire performed and assessed
through the year. Students must have taken Piano 1 or private lessons as a prerequisite.

Course Objectives
The Alabama Course of Study and the Baldwin County Curriculum Guide will be followed. Students are
expected to participate in all aspects of learning, both in and out of the classroom. Objectives include:
1. Developing and building upon a strong foundation in music literacy and aural skills
2. Developing and improving skills for a well-rounded piano technique
3. Expanding musical knowledge through a variety of repertoire experiences
4. Exploring many other related concepts, including music history and music theory

Students will need a pencil and a notebook (binder preferred). All music will be given to students in class.
Failure to have these materials during class may result in grade reduction. Students are expected to
replace lost or damaged materials.

theory quizzes.

Dress Code
Students are expected to adhere and uphold the Fairhope High School/Baldwin County Student Dress
Code at all times.

Tardy Policy
Students are expected to get to class in a timely manner. Per school-wide policy - the door will be closed
when the bell rings and all students entering after must have a tardy pass - no exceptions.

Make-up Policy
Since this is a performance-based class, excessive absence makes learning more difficult. If a student
misses an assessment (theory quiz, playing test, etc.), they will have THREE DAYS to make-up the
missed assessment upon return without penalty. Failure to complete the makeup assessment will result in
a correlating grade.
