Course: Math, Measurement and Data.

Name of Lesson: Chocolate Bar Measurement Grade: Second

Standard: CC.2.4.2 Measure and estimate lengths in standard units using
appropriate tools.
Behavioral Objective: Students will be able to write the measurements of a
chocolate bar, height and length, using measurement tools. Students will then
record their answers on a data sheet.
Materials: Chocolate bar, ruler, data sheet, pencil
Motivator: Ask the students some questions about chocolate bars.
 Would you rather a big or little chocolate bar?
 Show them a regular chocolate bar and a mini one, ask them
which one they would want by show of hands.
 Ask the students why they want the one they do?
 Start explaining that they can measure the chocolate bars to
find out which one is better.
Sequence of activities:
1. Explain to the students that they are going to learn about measurement
today.
2. Show students the ruler.
3. Ask if anybody knows what the tool is used for.
4. Explain that rulers are used to measure items.
5. Start by explaining how a ruler works.
6. Show students the inch lines they will be using to measure.
7. Give each student a ruler.
8. Model for students how to use a ruler by measuring a piece of paper.
9. Now ask them to measure their pencil.
10.Discuss answers as a class.
11.Remind students that they are measuring in inches so they must label that.
12. Pass out recording sheets.
13. Read the directions as a class.
14. Pair the students up.
15.Give each pair three paper chocolate bars.
16.Each group will measure the height and length of the chocolate bars and
record on the data sheet.
17.Then, they will write a sentence comparing the chocolate bars.
18.When they finish, the teacher will give them the bonus sheet and a real
chocolate bar to measure.
19.Students can eat chocolate bars as you review answers as a class.

Adaptations: If students need more challenging problems ask them to draw two
chocolate bars on the back of their data sheet using the ruler. Ask them to draw a
chocolate bar longer and taller than their real chocolate bar. And a chocolate bar
that is shorter both in length and height than their real chocolate bar.
If students need extra help the teacher can draw lines on the paper chocolate
bars to help the student line up their ruler.
Closure: Today we practiced using rulers by measuring paper chocolate bars and a
real chocolate bar. We used this data to compare the size of the chocolate bars
and decide which one we would want to eat. Tomorrow we are going to continue
working on measurement.
