MARKING SCHEME

Markers are advised that unless a Task specifically states that an answer is demanded in a
particular form, then an answer that is correct, factually or in practical terms, must be given the
available marks. If there is doubt as to the correctness of an answer the relevant NCC textbook
should be the first authority.

This Marking Scheme has been prepared as a guide only to markers, and there will frequently be
many alternative responses which will provide a valid answer.

The candidates’ scripts must be fully annotated with the marker’s comments, where applicable, and
the marks allocated for each part of the Tasks.

Throughout the marking, please credit any valid alternative point.

Notice to Markers

Where markers award half marks in any part of a Task they should ensure that the total mark
recorded for a Task is a whole mark.

Marking Scheme
Task Criteria Maximum
Mark
1 Gigabit Ethernet Evidence of relevant research on the topic of Gigabit 5
Ethernet, such as references, hyperlinks or a bibliography
should be rewarded
2 Resilient networks Evidence of relevant research on the topic of resilient 5
networks, such as references, hyperlinks or a bibliography
should be rewarded.
For full marks the candidate must demonstrate good
research techniques and comprehensive research
documentation.
3 Feasibility Report The report should be word processed and well structured.
Marks should be awarded for style and presentation.
For full marks there should be:
• A comprehensive introduction which covers all the
major aspects of both Gigabit Ethernet and resilient
networks. 5
• A good analysis of the scenario with clear, brief
description of the problem. 5
• A comprehensive list of potential benefits and possible
drawbacks associated with both Gigabit Ethernet and 5
resilient networks.
• An appropriate solution to the upgrade of the network
system to Gigabit Ethernet including a design for a
suitable network topology, identifying and listing the
hardware required. 15
• An appropriate solution to the implementation of a
resilient network including the identification of all
necessary hardware and software required. 20

4 Project Plan The project plan should provide a brief overview of 15
Gigabit Ethernet and resilient network technologies
employed, and include a schedule for the work to be
carried out.
For full marks the candidates MUST take into account the 15
need to avoid disruption of day to day operations and an
appropriate phased implementation should be used.

5 Presentation Mark should be awarded as follows:
• Correct comparison of Protocols 3
• Correct contrast of Protocols 3
• Style and content 4
