• Road Accidents are inevitable when it comes to low visibility in hilly areas and
roads were the visibility is less than 30m.
• In this project, we are going to design a sensor apparatus which emits,
receives and transmits obstacles in low visibility areas.
• The sensor is used to signal the light apparatus, when the sensors get an input
after emitting, it is sent to the light.
• Ultrasonic sensor along with micro controller program is the heart of the project.
• This sensor can be used in hilly areas and regions where the weather
conditions are very unpredictable.
• This will definitely increase road awareness of the driver but there are still other
factors which also lead to accidents.
• We are trying to reduce the possibility of an accident in a low visibility area by
increasing the road awareness.

Idea of the project

• Usage of sensors to make driver aware of the roads with usage of ultrasonic
• The LED light will blink when the driver is nearing to the obstacle or lower side of
the road.
• For hilly regions, sensors will be placed on the lower hill bend. With the usage of
cells, the sensors will be emitting signals and when car is in close vicinity to the
wall/road end/ the sensor, it will receive a signal.
• That input signal will be processed by the micro controller which is a
preprogrammed module, will send electric signal to the light which is in upper
bend. The driver is intimated with the emission of light when he is close to the hill
road end.

• Here, we use ultrasonic sensors to check the visibility of the road in hilly regions
• First we assemble the circuit
• Then, we give the code to the circuit telling it to act if the entity is close enough
(We can set desired distance. In this example case code, we set 30cms.)
• Then when we run the Arduino output, we get continuous results showing how
far the nearest object is.
• Thus we can use this in hilly regions telling the vehicles when to stop when other
vehicle is spotted.

Proposed sensor and light apparatus in roads

Materials Required

This system mainly consists of two parts: Hardware and software. Hardware design
consists of sensors like ultrasonic sensor, Arduino UNO and LED. Ultrasonic
Ultras sensor uses
+5V DC supply. Arduino UNO Software design is done for sensing the vehicle or
obstacle and to operate the LED by using Arduino 1.0.5 IDE tool which is open source

• Jumper wires

• Ultrasonic Sensors:

Ultrasonic sensors are based on the measurement of the properties of acoustic

waves with frequencies above the human audible range, often at roughly 40 kHz.
They typically operate by generating a high
frequency pulse of sound, and then
receiving and evaluating the properties of the echo pulse.

• Arduino IDE:
Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and
software. Arduino boards are able to read inputs - light on a sensor, a finger on a
button, or a Twitter message - and turn it into an output - activating a motor,
turning on an LED, publishing something online.

Working process

Ultrasonic sensor has 4 pins. They are +5V VCC, GND, Trig pin and Echo pin. Here
Trigger pin is output pin and Echo pin is input pin. Ultrasonic sensor sends the signal in
the form of pulses from trigger pin.

When this signal hit the object it will get reflected back and is received by the echo pin.
From echo the signal is sent to microcontroller Arduino UNO.

Microcontroller Arduino UNO processes this data and operates the LED which is
connected to output pin. LED is operated according to the command i.e. LED will glow
if the signal is reflected back. In the absence of the object the signal will not reflect back.
Hence the LED will not glow.
