Topic / Title Pascal’s Principle

Grade Level Grade 10

Time Allotment 90 minutes
Teacher Georgette Matin
Learning Competency
Understand the concept and applications of Pascal’s Principle.
Objectives
By the end of class, students should be able to:
1. Understand the concept of Pascal’s Principle.
2. Cite examples of Pascal’s Principle that they encounter in their everyday life.
ELICIT Materials needed
Students are group into 2, the first group will be the team Pressure and the
second group will be No pressure. The group will clap their hands when the
description given refers to them. The description are as follows:
1. Heart pumping blood all the way around the body.
2. 2 Group labels (written in
bondpaper)
3. Car brakes
4. Dw
5. D
6. D
7. F
8. D
9. F
10.
Students will further answer the following questions briefly:
1. How to determine phenomenon or objects with pressure?
2. What causes pressure?
3.
In today’s lesson, we will determine objects with pressure and how it works.
ENGAGE
Show a picture of a hydraulic car lift and let students think how the system Picture of Hydraulic car lift
works. Ask for ideas and opinions from the students.
EXPLORE

To give students the idea on how the Pascal’s Principle in a hydraulic system 1 small syringe
works students will perform the activity “Hydraulic: Lift me up” The activity 1 big syringe
aims to investigate the behavior of fluid in an enclosed system (hydraulic 1 small transparent hose/tube
system). Water
Food coloring (2 colors)
Key Questions:
Glue stick
1. What caused the movement of 2nd syringe? Glue gun
2. What is the direction of the water in the syringe when press in the Tape
right? Left? Box (Karton)
3. Does the activity agree with the Pascal’s principle? Explain.

The teacher will assess students’ laboratory activity performance by group.

Students must follow the procedure and safety precautions in the activity. Laboratory performance rating
sheet
EXPLAIN
Each group will present their laboratory report. After the report, the teacher Laboratory Performance rating
will give inputs on important concepts missed by the students. The teacher sheet
will also explain the concept and introduce formula and calculations in
Pascal’s Principle.
ELABORATE
Students will practice solving problems using Pascal’s principle formula
F1 = F2
A1 A2

EVALUATE
Give students a short assessment about Pascal’s Principle.
1.____ is the amount of force acting on a given area.
2. The SI unit for pressure is the
a. Newton
b. Watt
c. Pascal
d. Joules
3. In a hydraulic system, a piston has a cross-sectional area of 20 square
centimeters pushes on an incompressible liquid with a force of 30 newtons.
The other end of the hydraulic pipe connects to the second piston with a
cross-sectional surface area of 100 square centimeters. Calculate the force on
the second piston.
4. Area of A is 60 cm2 and area of B is 4,200 cm2, determine the external
input force of F.
Known :
Area of A1= 60 cm2
Area of A2 = 4200 cm2
Weight w (w) = 3500 Newton
5. A piston has a cross-sectional area of 40 square centimeters in a hydraulic
system and pushes an incompressible liquid with a force of 50 newtons. The
other end of the hydraulic pipe is connected to a second piston with a cross-
sectional surface area of 50 square centimeters. Determine the force on the
second piston.
EXTEND
For assignment, ask students to write down real life application of Pascal’s
Principle that they encounter in everyday life except the given already.
e.g. Heart pumping blood throughout the body
