Introduction 7
“His first two clients were the last two persons hanged in the May-
comb Count}' jail Atticus had urged them to accept the state's
generosity in allowing them to plead guilty to second-degree murder
and escape with their lives, but they were Haverfords, in Maycomb
County a name synonymous with jackass. The Haverfords had dis
patched Maycomb 's leading blacksmith in a misunderstanding aris
ing from the alleged wrongful detention of a maret were imprudent
enough to do it in the presence o f three witnesses, and insisted
that the-son-of-a-bitch-had-it-coming-to-him was good enough de
fense for anybody. ”

T hf C ourt This is one of those cases that you sort
of hate to decide because of the
technicality of the law, but yet it is
necessary that we observe those
technicalities because they are
fundamental to all of our rights. 1 have
always wondered a little bit why police
officers went through somewhat of a
charade of giving people field sobriety
tests when without somehow or another
knowing the person’s— I think I could
take all those tests and probably flunk
them all because I’m not all that well
coordinated an individual. Without
knowing that about a person, I really
wonder why they think that they really
prove the person’s sobriety or insobriety.
It was rather graphically shown by the
officer himself. Apparently, he and I are
kind of the same. W e’re not real well
coordinated.

Dear Judge,
W e understand that the defendant is awaiting your
sentence for mistakes he has made. W e have known
him for several years, as a patient, and we feel that in
spite of this terrible mistake, he has the knowledge to
completely and irreversibly rehabilitate himself within
the minimum sentence of eight years. He has fortu
nately been instructed in the Transcendental Medita
tion program as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and
if he will promise to practice this technology regularly
twice daily during his incarceration, very quickly his
brain and nervous system will become very orderly,
making him incapable of disorderly thinking or action
leading to crime. If he were to impress other prisoners
with his progress, they might be inspired to take up the
practice, and the whole prison will begin to radiate
order and harmony.

Sit back and enjoy a collection of verbatim exchanges from the halls of
justice, where defendants and plaintiffs, lawyers and witnesses, juries and
judges, collide to produce memorably inane comedy.
A. You mumbled on the first part of that and I couldn't understand what
you were saying. Could you repeat the question?
Q. I mumbled, did I? Well, we'll just ask the court reporter to read back
what I said. She didn’t indicate any problem understanding what I said, so
obviously she understood every word. We’ll just have her read my question
back and find out if there was any mumbling going cn. Madam reporter,
would you be so kind?
