HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)

URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR

LEARNING CONTRACT

Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths in an organizational/interpersonal setting that

aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored programs and activities of URI’s
Center for Student Leadership Development.

Activity:
I plan to be an overnight host for the Multicultural Overnight Program. I feel as
though my strengths and values would be highlighted by doing this program. My Values
are curiosity, fairness, humor, social intelligence and teamwork. I feel like my social
intelligence, humor, and teamwork would work best in the MOP because I will work to
make students not only feel comfortable, but also work with my teamwork and humor to
help rising college students make the decision that is best for them and hopefully help
them find a home here at URI. My core strengths are Adaptability, Connectedness, Woo,
Arranger, and Ideation. I feel like this program would best highlight my connectedness
and adaptability because I will be making new connections and helping students find
connections here at URI along with being able to adapt to not only a rising student, but
also adapt to whatever the program may throw my way.

Evidence: Group picture from training.

Annotation: The Multicultural Overnight Program is a program for rising freshman who
identify as multicultural to come to the University of Rhode Island and attain a better
sense of what being a Rhody Ram is. It is hosted by a multicultural organization on
campus called D.R.I.V.E. which focuses on diversifying, recruiting, inspiring,
volunteering, and educating. This experience allows students to see the opportunities here
at the University like the Center for Student Leadership Development, different
organizations around campus, and overall try to find their home on campus. Enrolled
students then have the opportunity to be day hosts or night hosts or both. Day hosts
essentially take students to their activities like classes, scavenger hunts, and other things
to do around campus. Night hosts host the students overnight in their dorms. I decided to
do both hosts and because of that, my strengths of Woo and Adaptability coupled with
my values of Teamwork, Humor, and Social Intelligence were highlighted and came to
life.
My strengths of Woo and Social Intelligence were the first of them to come out.
Woo essentially refers to being able to win people over and social intelligence highlights
being able to know different social settings and knowing how to best manage them.
These two came into effect when first meeting the students and getting them more
comfortable with each other. Adaptability, teamwork, and humor came in a little later in
the day when it came to the dance competition, one of the events for the night.
Maintaining a sense of humor helped to bring everyone to dance like no one’s watching.
The adaptability and teamwork then came in when working together as a group to all
choreograph a dance. I had to be adaptable to everyone’s abilities and change things
quickly all while working as a team to finally make a great dance. Due to all this, my
team was able to win the competition and left the crowd speechless. My strengths also
came out in conversations whether it be about academics, where they are from, or just
college questions, I was able to befriend a lot of the students and helped some even
finalize the decision of choosing URI as their home for the next four.
