Lesson: Kingdom Plantae: Pollination

School:
Time: 1 hour

Defining Success
OBJECTIVE: What will your students be able to do by the end of class?

At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

1. Classify the different groups of organisms under kingdom plantae.
2. Identify the characteristics of plants.
3. Differentiate vascular and nonvascular plants.

KEYPOINT: What three to five

domain ideas or steps will you
ASSESSMENT: How will you know concretely that all of your

include key questions to ask during
instruction.

The students have mastered the objective when they exhibit  Plants are a lineage of land-
understanding of the Kingdom Plantae and the different organisms dwelling, multicelled,
under it. The students would also be able to identify the different photosynthetic eukaryotes.
characteristics of a plant or plants. Also, after comprehending the
information given to them the students would be able to differentiate  Nonvascular plants are those
between vascular and nonvascular plants in full detail. Lastly, the who lack vascular tissues
students would then be able to classify the plants in their which are the xylem and
environment accordingly. phloem. Moss, Liverworts and
Hornworts belong are
examples of nonvascular
plants.
 Vascular plants are those who
possess vascular tissues. Ferns,
Horse tails, Club Mosses,
together with the
Gymnosperms and
Angiosperms are examples of
vascular plants.

Good morning/ afternoon class! Good morning/afternoon ma’am!

(The teacher will ask the class monitor if there

are any student that is absent today. After the
checking of attendance, the teacher will collect
the assignments from the students.)

Who can tell me what our previous discussion

was all about? (A student raises his/her hand to answer)
Yes (points at a student) Our topic last meeting was all about Vascular Plants.

Okay, very good! Our discussion last meeting

was about Vascular Plants.
Would anyone like to share what they have The student shares his/her learnings in front of the class.
learned from the discussion last meeting?
Yes (points at one student)

Q.1 What are vascular plants? Ma’am, vascular plants are any one of a number of plants
with specialized vascular tissue.

Q.2: What is the difference between vascular

and nonvascular plants? As opposed to a non-vascular plant, a vascular plant can
grow much larger. The vascular tissue within provides a
means of transporting water to great heights, allowing a
vascular plant to grow upward to catch the sun.

Q.3: Do you have any idea how plants Yes, Ma’am. Some plants can reproduce on their own but
reproduce? others could not. Bees also help in the reproduction
process of plants

The teacher will then give instructions regarding

an activity that will be performed inside the
classroom later on.
ENGAGE: Get the students’ minds focused on the topic.

The teacher will show a short video to the

students about the process of pollination. The The students will pay attention to the video and gather

information from the video presented.

EXPLORE: Provide students with a common experience.

The teacher will give an group activity. The class

will be required to bring manila paper and
marker each.

The activity is called “How Do I Look?”. This

activity enables students to investigate on the
physical characteristics of the plants that are
given. The plants either belong to monocot or
dicot but in this activity the students are only
made to observe the leaves, flowers, and roots of
the plant sample. The students will observe each plant sample and answer
the table written on the manila paper. After 20 minutes
they will post their work in front.
The class will be divided into five groups. Each
group will observe one specimen. A table will be
provided for them and all they need to do is write
it on the manila paper and identify each of the
characteristics being asked.

This activity is good for 20 minutes only, which

include their observation and the time it will take
to finish answering the table. Afterwards, they
will post their work in front and they will check
it later.

EXPLAIN: Allow the learners to construct an explanation. The teacher may provide some information to
increase the accuracy of student responses.

At this point, the teacher will start the discussion

on Kingdom Plantae using a powerpoint
presentation.

1. Define pollination and pollinators. Give

examples of various pollinators found in The students actively participate in the oral questioning
the environment. and listen during the discussion.

2. Major Groups of Plants

 Eudicot (Dicot)
 Monocot

3. Discuss the characteristics of monocot

plants

4. Discuss the characteristics of dicot plants.

5. Present a table showing the differences

between monocot and dicot plants.

6. Ecology and Human Uses of Plants

 Cereal Crops
 Rice
 Wheat, Barley, and Sorghum
 Legumes
 Fibers – plant fibers
 Oak and other hardwood
 Medicine
 Coffee, Tea, and Tobacco
 Opium Poppies
 Coca

(Further discussions of the topic will be projected

on a TV through power point presentation)
ELABORATE: Apply knowledge to new domain/context.
The students will now apply the information they
have learned during the discussion by
participating in an oral questioning. In this short
activity, the students will be asked some

questions related to what is discussed earlier.

Did you understand our topic for today class? Yes, ma’am!
Okay, what is pollination? (A student raises his/her hand)
Pollination is the process of transferring pollen from one
plant to another or from the male part to the female part of
a plant.

Pollinators are anything that aid in the process of

What are pollinators? Give an example. pollination. Examples are bees, humans, wind or water

What are the two major groups of plants? The two major groups of plants are monocot and dicot.
Discuss each briefly Monocots differ from dicots in four distinct
structural features: leaves, stems, roots and flowers.
Monocots have one cotyledon, dicots have two. Monocot
leaves are characterized by their parallel veins, while
dicots form “branching veins. Monocots tend to have
“fibrous roots while dicots have one main root called a
taproot.

What are the ecological and human uses of Some of the uses of plants are medicine, coca, cereal,
plants? Give an example. wheat, barley, rice, coffee, tea and fiber.

Lastly, from the activity that we had done which (Students present their results in front of the class)
plant do you think is considered monocot and
which is dicot?

EVALUATE: How will you know the students have learned the concept?

Identify what is being asked from each item.

EXTEND: Deepen conceptual understanding through use in new context.
Practice the transfer of learning.

Laboratory Work
The students will answer the questions and
perform an activity entitled “Plant Diversity”.
