Grade and Topic: Second Grade and Math Length of Lesson: 45

minutes

Mentor Teacher: Margaret Murdock and Marla Phillips School: University of Memphis –
IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

● This lesson will cover the factors and products in whole number multiplication equations.
Students in third grade develop an understanding of the meaning of multiplication of
whole numbers through activities and problems. Multiplication is finding an unknown
product for equal-sized group situations. Students use properties of operations to
calculate products of whole numbers, using increasingly sophisticated strategies based on
these properties to solve multiplication. Most third graders will be able to memorize all of
the products of two one-digit numbers. 3.OA.A.1

LESSON OBJECTIVE:

● Given a quiz, the third grade math student will identify how to solve the multiplication
problems calculating whole numbers 90% accuracy.
● Given a word comic strip, the third grade math student will describe properties of
operations to calculate products of whole numbers to the problem give and give another
example of a problem using the same strategies to solve the multiplication problem.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA) 3.OA.A.1
Interpret the factors and products in whole number multiplication equations (e.g., 4 x 7 is 4
groups of 7 objects with a total of 28 objects or 4 strings measuring 7 inches each with a total of
28 inches.)

MATERIALS:

● Computers with Microsoft word

● Notebooks (1 per students)
● Pencil
● Hand out
● Powerpoint
● Quiz
● Toondoo comic
● software application
● Mobile App

● Introduction: The teacher will begin the lesson by asking the students what they know
about multiplication and grouping (5 minutes). The teacher will then introduce the “I
Can” statement to the class. I can understand multiplication by thinking about groups of
objects.
● Procedures:
● The teacher will give students instructions on how the lesson will flow and ask for
questions (3 minutes)
● The teacher will discuss the multiplication over a powerpoint and do review
questions. Students will observe and take notes and interact during this time. (15
minutes).
● Students will use computer to look at comic strip to further understanding on
multiplication and grouping from superheroes and villains. (2 minutes)
● The students will create their on comic strip after looking at at teachers and
explain. ( 6 minutes)
● The students log on to the mobile app and pick from the options given to work on
grouping while multiplying, (6 minutes)
● The students will login on and pick games from the software application to give
more practice of multiplication. (5 minutes)

● Closure: As a closure activity, the students will take a quiz on grouping and
multiplications. They will turn this in to me when finishing (8 minutes).

ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE:

● Assessments will take place by the teacher observing the students during the activity and
how they are taking notes. It will also take place in the comic submitted and the quiz
submitted at the end of class.
● The students will be able to identify the operations of multiplication on the comic strip, as
well as well as the operations of grouping.

MODIFICATIONS:

● Students who did not master this objective will apply using multiplication to something
more common, such as printing off their favorite animals to group, in order to master the
concept of calculate products of whole numbers.
● For those who are ready for a quicker-paced lesson, they will be able to play games that
quiz their different multiplication tables.
