Reflection

Realism is a style of painting, also known as naturalism, that represents subject matter in

its truest form. Realism began in France during the 1840’s and continues to be practiced by

contemporary artists. Many artists such as Edouard Manet, Winslow Homer, Janet Fish, and

Jude Rae have created realistic images of people, nature, and objects from everyday life. Still life

images capture the essence of the object(s) by incorporating elements of art such as value,

form, space, color, and texture giving the artwork realistic characteristics.

For this assignment I would like my future students to create a still life image using one

everyday object of choice. Once their object is chosen I will encourage my future students to

describe their object of choice and why the object was selected. During the lesson, I would like

my students to study their objects from many angles and sketch what they see while identifying

the art elements that highlight realistic characteristics used in Realism paintings/ drawings.

After the completion of their preliminary sketches they will begin to draw their object digitally

using the Procreate app on their iPads. Procreate is a mobile app that allows the user to create

digital works of art that can mimic the style of realistic paintings and drawings.

Many artists from the past to the present have created works of art from life

observations and I feel as though this lesson provides a foundation of skills needed to create

realistic images of everyday artists. This lesson provides students with the opportunity to

choose their content (to recreate) while employing elements of art that will assist with the

process and skill development of paying attention to detail. Overall, my goal is to teach my

future students how to identify characteristics of Realism, object details, and a new digital

medium for creating artwork.
