Gastight Construction
Pumps with gastight construction (usually material such as 4L or 34L) are assembled in same manner as in preceding
paragraphs; however, construction in area of cover plate is different, as described here:
1. Gastight construction uses discharge spool instead of discharge pipe. Gasket 1/32 inch (0.8 mm) thick is used
between spool and cover plate.
2. Tapped holes in upper flange of boot attached to cover plate are not drilled completely through, thus eliminating
possibility of gas or fumes leaking past threads in flange. Gasket 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) thick is used between boot
and cover plate.
3. Entire bottom side of cover plate is ground flat to ensure proper fit instead of merely additional ring surface at
boot/cover plate joint on “standard” type of construction.
4. Stuffing box is drilled and tapped to permit sealing with gas purge or grease. Box is also bored deeper to use
lantern ring and packing as shown in Technical Service Bulletin 326.
As result of these design differences, some parts (shaft, boot, discharge pipe) associated with length of pump are not
interchangeable between pumps of gastight and standard construction.
