CUBE 1
1 Three experiments, I, II and III are carried out to investigate the factors affecting the rate of
reaction. Table 1 shows
the reactants and the conditions of reaction involved.

Condition of
Experiment Reactants
reaction
50 cm3 of 0.5 mol dm-3 hydrochloric
I Excess zinc Room temperature
acid
50 cm3 of 0.5 mol dm-3 sulphuric
II Excess zinc Room temperature
acid
50 cm3 of 0.5 mol dm-3 sulphuric
III Excess zinc 60 °C
acid
Table 1
(a) (i) Refering to experiments I, II and III, state:
 The meaning of the rate of reaction
 Two factors that affect the rate of reaction [3
marks]
A measurement which the change of concentration of hydrochloric acid and sulphuric
acid against time
FACTORS:temperature for the reaction, concentration of hydrogen ion

ii) Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction in experiment.

[2 marks]
Experiment 1: Zn + 2HCl  ZnCl2 + H2
Experiment 2 and 3:Zn + H2SO4  ZnSO4 + H2

(b) Calculate the total volume of hydrogen gas released in experiment I.

[Molar gas volume at room conditions is 24 dm3]
[3 marks]
Number of mole of HCl=(50x0.5)÷1000 volume of H2=0.0125x24
=0.025mol =0.3dm3
From the reaction,
2 mol of HCl: 1 mol of H2
0.025mol of HCl:0.0125 mol of H2

(c) Diagram 1 shows the results of experiments I, II and III.

Diagram 1
Based on the graph,
(i) compare the rate of reaction between experiment I and experiment II.
Explain your answer using the Collision Theory.
The rate of reaction in experiment 1 is lower than experiment 2.
Sulphuric acid is diprotic acid but hydrochloric acid is monoprotic acid.
The number of hydrogen ions by 1mol of sulphuric acid is double of 1 mol of hydrochloric
acid.
The frequency of collision between zinc atom and hydrogen ion in experiment 2 is higher
than experiment 1.
The frequency of effective collision between zinc atom and hydrogen ion in experiment 2 is
Higher than experiment 1.

[5 marks]
(ii) suggest one way to obtain curve III without changing zink, acid or temperature in experiment
II.
Explain your answer using the Collision Theory.
Add copper (II) sulphate into the experiment 3
Copper (II)sulphate acts as catalyst for the reaction and it provides an alternative path of
reation that need lower activation energy.
More colliding hydrogen ion and zinc atom produce activation energy.
The frequency of effective collision between zinc atom and hydrogen ion increase.
The initial rate of reaction increase.
[5 marks]

(iii) explain why the total volume of hydrogen gas released in experiment I and experiment II is
doubled that of
experiment I.
Zinc is in excess,so concentration of acid is limiting factor.
The volume of hydrogen gas depends on the concentration of acid
The number of mole of acid in ecperiment 2 and 3 is double of experiment 1.
