In preparing for JMUke events, our groups communicated online, and
had in person meetings, to plan our leadership roles and practice our

out into the farmers market to talk to people and bring them to our
experience. When we saw people that were unsure of themselves,
we sought to encourage them. Every person in our group
contributed at least one chord/lyric outline of a song of their choice
and taught it to the community. We gave out handouts that
contained a QR code to a survey that asked participants about their
experience, so that we can continue to improve it through feedback.

ukulele. I learned that consistency and variety are helpful teaching
tools. For example, we designated a color to each chord, and we
had multiple ways of presenting chords- both on the slide, and by
matching color stickers marking where to place fingers on a ukulele
to play each chord. We made sure to pick songs that people knew so
that they could learn an instrument in a comfortable way, using
knowledges they already have. For some very young children, the
ukuleles was too big for them to play certain chords. We encouraged
people to omit chords that were too difficult for them to learn at that
time.

modeling when needed. To create a positive environment, everyone
participated fully and modeled confident singing and playing.
