I have had the opportunity to meet and discuss the subject with many individuals involved therein, as well as re- view virtually every written word on the subject. It is in this regard that I first became acquainted with Clive Houlsby. He had submitted written discussion to a published paper which I had authored. His discussion exhibited his own wide knowledge of the subject as, well as an intense desire to stay totally informed. and perhaps, most significantly, complete objectivity and honesty. This is a quality often sadly lacking Where, ‘routing is concerned and many self-proclaimed “ma- gicians” pervade. It is not unusual for such “experts” to present their ideas with a certain amount of mysti cism, refusing to discuss them in any detail or offer any documentation for their substantiation, let alone share in any detail their own experiences. Another sad to the grouting field is a tendency to “sweep under the rug” those projects where the results have been less than satisfactory. Such is not the case with Clive Houlsby, who is always anxious to share his knowledge and experience (both good and othenvise! and objectively discuss any matter pertaining to the subject. From my first introduction to this unusual man. a long-term relationship has developed, and I have = to recognize him as the world’s most knowled authority on the cement grouting of rock found Through the years, I have grown to know Houlsby well and have, among many other professional 2. ties, been privileged to work with him in presentation of the annual Short Course on the Fundamentals of Grouting sponsored by the University of Missouri Rolla and held each year since 1979. Clive Houlsby is a rare individual who quietly goes about his work, humble, curious beyond description. meticulous and a near perfectionist, who attends to every detail, as well as one who assumes the validity of nothing, unless supported by valid documentation. Whereas the grouting field is filled with many “‘ex- perts,” it is seldom that the opinions espoused are backed up by either long-term monitoring or other valid documentation. Such is not the case with Houlsby, whose ideas. although they at first might seem revolutionary, are always validated by thorough documentation, whether it be through research. field observation, long-term monitoring of actual field appli- cations. or, most often. all of the above As Engineer of Grouting for the Water Resources Commission of New South Wales, Australia. Houlsby authored and produced what is, I believe, the first ever and probably only “how to do it”” Grouting Manual. That publication, although intended only for in-house use, has since its introduction in 1972 undergone four editions and seven printings, has been produced in three languages, and is in use throughout the entire ‘world. Houlsby entered the grouting field in 1954 as a ‘young engineer working in the field on a grouting crew. Following many years of work with the crews in the eld, he progressively rose to more important duties, always, however, maintaining close contact with grouting matters until his final position of Leader of, Dam Safety and Monitoring for the Water Resources Commission. In order to have the time to write this volume and to follow other creative pursuits, he took early retirement from the Commission in 1986. Although he warns the reader in the first chapter that this volume is to be used as a “guide only.” what follows is a complete treatise on the subject of cement grouting in rock. Despite the fact that it forms only a small part of the overall volume. all of the material v
