Praise and gratitude we pray to God Almighty, Because of His blessings and
grace, so we were given the opportunity to complete the Critical Book Review by
criticizing the public speaking’s book.
The purpose of this task is to critique The Art of Public Speaking and
Successful Public Speaking to find out the contents, advantages and disadvantages
contained in the book.
We conclude that this task has not reached the perfect stage, therefore if any
suggestions and criticisms it will be necessary to make this task better.
We hope this Critical Book Review can be accepted by Sir Syamsul Bachri SS.,
M.Hum as our lecturer in Public Speaking courses.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
The truth is that you might have the best products or services, year of experience or
an outstanding business idea, but if you do not communicate this to your target
audiences, you are limiting your effectiveness. All too often, the very best and
inspiring stories in organizations and companies go untold because of people’s
reductance to or fear of taking the stage.
CHAPTER II
SUMMARY
From time to time it’s important to take a step back and put the world of public
speaking into perspective. I do take it very seriously, and I am completely passionate
about it, but it’s also important to recognize that public speaking is one human
activity out of many, we don’t burn people at the stake any longer for disagreeing
with us, and ultimately life is about love and work, as Freud noted, so at the very
most public speaking should only occupy your thinking 50% of the time. And so here
are my 10 rules for thinking rationally about public speaking, whether it’s something
you dread or love, whether it’s a career for you, or a religion, and whether or not you
ever will consider trying to master the art and science of it.
The previous segments in this chapter explained how public speaking can enrich
personal life, professional life, and the outside world. Still not convinced? If you
worry that public speaking has nothing to offer you, or simply isn’t worth the stress,
then check out this brief review of the benefits of public speaking:
Personal Satisfaction
OVERCOME FEARS
Many people have a phobia of public speaking. Jerry Seinfeld put it this way:
"According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two
is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average
person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the
eulogy."Even though public speaking can be scary, it is possible to succeed in spite of
these fears--with preparation and practice.
BOOST SELF-ESTEEM
Public speaking is quite the self-esteem booster. Overcoming the fears and
insecurities that accompany public speaking is empowering. Furthermore, connecting
with audiences can be a great reminder that you have valuable insights and opinions
to share with the world.
It can be very satisfying to share something that matters to you with people outside
your usual social circle.
Critical Thinking
The process of writing a speech will exercise and strengthen your critical thinking
skills, from the research to the actual speech-drafting.
Preparing a speech will force you to reevaluate the way you communicate and re-
examine your speaking habits.
Personal Development
When you write a speech, you have to think carefully about the best organizational
framework, persuasive strategy, and language to communicate your message to the
audience. This type of thinking can help you improve your communication skills in
other areas of your life.
Public speaking engagements are great places to meet other people who share your
interests.
Career Advancement
GAIN PUBLICITY
Public speaking can bring like-minded professionals together to share ideas. These
engagements are great networking opportunities!
If you establish a good reputation as a public speaker, your public persona will set
you apart from the sea of faceless resumes and cover letters.
Public speaking has a long history as a catalyst for nonviolent activism and political
change. It is a powerful way to unite people under a common cause and motivate
them to take action.
CHAPTER III
CRITIQUE
A. Literary Appreciation
There are two good things that catch writer’s attention in the book. First, the
book is full of images, but the author of the book doesn’t give clue to the image, but
on the contrary, the author persuades the readers to find a clue about the image by
themselves. The second thing is the book tells one of the aspects in public speaking,
which is brave.
B. Literary Criticism
The book have so many questions, but the explanation is very deficient. The
book pushes the reader to know more about the subject by answering many
questions, but we must search the answer from another sources, to complete all of the
answer. The book also gives so little explanation about the subject itself, which is
public speaking. It only tells the basic knowledge about speaking, and doesn’t
analyze it widely.
CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSION
The conclusion from those books, are if you want to be a good public speaker, you
must have several skills, like you must brave, have critical thinking, emotional
intelegence etc. If you have those skills, you can be a good speaker in front of the
public itself, you can speak even though there are so many person around you.
