Summary:
The topic of the lesson reflected the Civil Rights Movement. Although the organization of the
lesson did not go as planned, it did offer realistic conversation to real world issues. The lessons
focus was on comprehension, writing, and compare/contrast. During the beginning of the
lesson we started by reading quotes from three Civil Rights activist including Dr. Martin L. King.
The MLK holiday had just passed and the students did not know who MLK was or why there was
a holiday for him. In this lesson it was important to make sure the students had a moment to
learn, not just be taught. There is emphasis on active learning and interaction with the content
according to Anderman, Andrzejewski, & Allen (2011).
Neither of the students are at grade level reading. Therefore, in this lesson I assisted with the
reading. Besides helping, I wanted to show the students that I am not a confident reader either
hoping to ease the feeling of embarrassment. Based on prior observation, I made sure that I
used multiple resources to present the information and receive feedback. Students need to be
offered and try new ways to approach assignments and learn to work together seeking input
from others according to Dweck, (2015).
Throughout the exploration of the lesson, the students were asked questions and were
encouraged to express their thoughts as it related to real world issues. There were moments
when the students appeared stuck in thought. When the students became confused or unsure
of what to say it is appropriate, according to Dweck (2015), to ask about trying something
different.
When working with students with different cultural backgrounds, there can be language
barriers. Not only with the native language but also with common slang or use of words. I find
that while working with these students, it was important to respect what was important to
them culturally and to be open to their way of speaking. By allowing this type of
communication, as the teacher I can use it to explain and breakdown the information being
taught and teach them real terms.
Hester_ Journal Assignment M#3_Topic: Establishing a Learning Environment
I know that both students learn differently, and it is important when planning a lesson.
Implementing alternatives is not easy when working with a larger group. However, when the
group is small it makes planning more individualized. Some students prefer to shutdown
instead of do work. These students have been more open, patient, and willing to work
together. Offering references that relate to an experience or common knowledge among that
students’ culture, will help encourage the student to participate. I believe showing dual
meanings of words the student is familiar with will help in their understanding when trying to
process text during a lesson. Also, I like the idea of participating with the students, not just
giving them an assignment, will ensure the students have support. Some students get confused
with the lack of interact. Therefore, the students may feel intimidated and not ask for the help
they need. By presenting this lesson I learned from their reflections that they are more open to
learning more about this topic.
