Reflection: (What have you learned about your students? How will this inform future instruction?)
I think this lesson went well. The students were excited to go outside and explore. We had a very nice day to do so. Before going outside I asked them
were they thought the insects live at or where we should look. A lot of them said, “in the ground”. When we went out that’s were they decided to look. They
listened very well and stayed focuses on the lesson despite another class playing on the playground at the time. I think they enjoyed using the clipboard. We saw
mostly ants. There was a cheeto left on the ground that was attracting them. When we went outside for recess later that day, a lot of the children went back over
We did not see very many other kinds of insects though. If I was going to do this lesson again I would try the grassy area of the playground on the other
side of the fence. This area is also fenced in but a separate playground. Also, a couple of the children drew spiders or talked about seeing spiders, while on out
hunt. So, I think I would review what an insect is more before going out. An insect has six legs and a spider had eight so it’s not really an insect. We talked about
this some in the moment while on the hunt, but I don’t feel as if they fully understood because they were too focused on looking for other insects.
