Corruption in the Real Word

Not only in Shakespeare’s stories there’s corruption, out there in the real world is also full of

corruption as well. In this word corruption is a relevant subject, as it exist in many subjects like

politics, sports, and social media. A Shakespeare character Macbeth showed elements of

corruption similar to real life for example he is trying to eliminate anyone who he falsely blame

for trying to take his position as king. The universal theme of corruption is also seen in today’s

politics, social media, and sports.

One subject being discussed in terms of corruption today takes place in politics. One example of

corruption in politics is the Watergate scandal which involves president Richard Nixon. “Several

burglars were arrested in the office of the democratic national committee, this is no ordinary

robbery: The prowlers are connected to Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign and caught

wiretapping phones and stealing documents” (History.com, paragraph 2). When the burglars are

caught there is evidence of them connected to Nixon’s plot to get reelected by hiring thieves to

steal information from political opponents which is a good example of corruption in politics.

Bribery is also an example of corruption and it is done by Congressman William J. Jefferson

who is accused of soliciting bribes from African companies. “Jefferson sought hundreds of

millions of dollars for himself and other co-conspirators from companies whose success depends

the approval of several American and west African agencies” (FBI, paragraph 4). There are

Evidence that Jefferson is helping out and taking bribes from corrupt African companies which

made him corrupt. Therefore, if a politician tries to cheat another and play the unfair game

against other candidates or solicitating bribes, one is now corrupt.

In social media there is also some reports of corruption taking place there despite all the drama

taking place there. When one thinks about social media one thinks about drama and people

cheating and betraying left and right but in reality, it is something more concerning. “In some

sites like you tube some people of people watching the most ridiculous things, and influenced

kids to do dangerous challenges, violent behavior, and the use of inappropriate language” (Paz,

Paragraph 2). Social media is not only corrupting and manipulating a child’s mind but there are

also adults through what president Trump refers as “fake news.” “The greater prevalence of false

information spread predominantly via social media has become a threat to public trust in both

mainstream and independent media” (Kossow, paragraph 1). The author explains what is actually

happening as a result of misinformation given, which results in loss of support on the media and

is still happening today. Nowadays, the media is not as trusted as kids losing their sanity to crazy

things, and adults arguing about misinformation in the media today.

Corruption is also found in sports as we always hear teams, players, and staff getting into

scandals and accused of doing a corrupt act. There is one case involving FIFA as a bribing

incident occurred by officials, local politicians, and contractors. “FIFA officials are bribed by

local politicians who in turn are bribed by contractors who will build the world cup stadiums and

sell products at the event, thus making huge sums of money” (Liberman, paragraph 5). Liberman

has described how the bribe incident works out which then shows how this starts to look corrupt.

One incident in boys high school soccer involving Carl Hayden, Washington, and Tucson high

schools whose players are caught playing non-high school soccer which is not only cheating its

corrupt as well, and have to forfeit their games. “Three boys soccer teams are discovered they

have players who participated in a club tournament during the first week of December” (Obert,

paragraph 2). The author of the article has explained the incident what exactly happened

mentioning how it led those teams to be disqualified for being unfair; its possibly a corruption

since the motive was not really known, as of what I see. Therefore, in sports, cheating is a form

of corruption, and punishments do happen as a result of taking part of it.

In today’s society corruption takes place in Politics, media, and sports. What made today’s

corruptions to Macbeth is the people involved in those scandals have a goal in mind like Nixon’s

reelection goals, Jefferson’s desire to get allot of money, The media throwing biased

information, to brainwash people into information that is not true at all or exaggerated, Sports

associations looking to built up profit, and players wanted to cheat; and the only answer to

achieve their goals is corruption; while Macbeth uses his position as king to increase his power

to make him look unstoppable. Everyone should know Macbeth’s examples of corruption is

about the same thing what is happening in real life, when one reads Macbeth one will see how he

corrupted Scotland with his abuse of power.
