Filmmaking.

Filmmaking behind the movie. I have decided to write this essay on filmmaking it's a

career i've been interested in my whole life. I've always liked creating films and the actual

filming itself. There's a lot more going on with camera movement and filmmaking tricks and

editing to get the most cinematic or best shot you can. With filmmaking you can create

something out of nothing It's not all about money all though it helps. Filmmaking can be done on

a really low budget and thats why im interested in this career.

Because it has such a high demand to work in the entertainment and video industry, this

is a highly competitive field. Making it hard to succeed in this career. Here the video/film is

assembled by the film editor The shot film material is edited. The production sound (dialogue) is

also edited; music tracks and songs are composed and recorded, if a film is sought to have a

score; sound effects are designed and recorded. Any computer-graphic visual effects are digitally

added by an artist. (Recording Amazing Audio for Your Low Budget Short Film.) There's a lot

of different things that make up a film and they all key in together. Such as in sound and music it

plays such a big role in the career as it sets the tone for a scene and can add suspense and thrill.

Editing can be one of the hardest and longest part of a production its where it all comes together

and where all the little details come into play editing can also be really time consuming and

where school comes. Having an education will set you off with a head start especially in editing.

In production, the film is created and shot. More crew will be recruited at this stage, such

as the property master, script supervisor, assistant directors, stills photographer, picture editor,

and sound editors. These are just the most common roles in filmmaking; the production office

will be free to create any unique blend of roles to suit the various responsibilities possible during

the production of a film. (Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production Stages.). When

filming they have so many people doing so many different things to make sure that the shot or

scene is perfect with nothing missing.

A typical day's shooting begins with the crew arriving on the set/location by their call

time. Actors usually have their own separate call times. Since set construction, dressing and

lighting can take many hours or even days, they are often set up in advance. (Pre-Production,

Production and Post-Production Stages.). In a high budget film with real actors they will be in

the trailer while you get everything set up.

While the crew prepare their equipment, the actors do their costumes and attend the hair

and make-up departments. The actors rehearse the script and blocking with the director, and the

camera and sound crews rehearse with them and make final tweaks. Finally, the action is shot in

as many takes as the director wishes. (Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production Stages.).

Everyone who is there is doing something and has a purpose in the career.

A film crew is a group of people, hired by a production company, for the purpose of

producing a film or motion picture. The crew is distinguished from the cast as the cast are

understood to be the actors who appear in front of the camera or provide voices for characters in

the film. The crew is also separate from the producers as the producers are the ones who own a

portion of either the film company or the film's intellectual property rights. A film crew is
Andrews 3

divided into different departments, each of which specializes in a specific aspect of the

production. (Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production Stages.) They have multiple people

filming to get all the angles and all the shots they need. They also need to do a lot of planning

and organization.

Light is necessary to create an image exposure on a frame of film or on a digital target.

The art of lighting for cinematography goes far beyond basic exposure, however, into the essence

of visual storytelling. Lighting contributes considerably to the emotional response an audience

has watching a motion picture. The increased usage of filters can greatly impact the final image

and affect the lighting. (Basic Cinematography Lighting Techniques.). Lighting has a important

role in filmmaking and cinematography Lighting could be one of the most important thing in a

scene and it really sets the mood and feel.

Cinematography can not only depict a moving subject but can use a camera, which

represents the audience's viewpoint or perspective, that moves during the course of filming. This

movement plays a considerable role in the emotional language of film images and the audience's

emotional reaction to the action. (Basic Cinematography Lighting Techniques.). Camera

movement is really important and it gives a much more creative and unique feel and you can

really make the audience know something about the film just through camera movement and

how you move and feel the camera. Also you can use camera movement do so many different

things with your scenes and creativity.

The first film cameras were fastened directly to the head of a tripod or other support, with

only the crudest kind of leveling devices provided, in the manner of the still-camera tripod heads

of the period. The earliest film cameras were thus effectively fixed during the shot, and hence the
Andrews 4

first camera movements were the result of mounting a camera on a moving vehicle. (Basic

Cinematography Lighting Techniques.). There's different tools and objects you can use to help

add effect. Like a tripod a tool that keeps the camera perfectly still. They also have a slider dolly

that makes shots buttery smooth something that a natural human could not make with there

hands.

Filters, such as diffusion filters or color effect filters, are also widely used to enhance

mood or dramatic effects. Most photographic filters are made up of two pieces of optical glass

glued together with some form of image or light manipulation material between the glass. (Basic

Cinematography Lighting Techniques.). Filters help so much in the world of filmmaking in can

even makes filming in the bright sunny day look dramatic and cinematic. It can also add effects

and different feeling to a shot Like brightening up dark footage to make it more fun and happy or

using filters like red or just dark filters for a horror movie or makes it more suspenseful. This

also helps with cut out the sun flares and other unwanted things in your shot.

Focal length and diaphragm aperture affect the depth of field of a scene – that is, how

much the background, midground and foreground will be rendered in "acceptable focus. (Basic

Cinematography Lighting Techniques.). Depth and field is very important it could be when the

audience is supposed to see something that when the depth of field changes with the focus. You

can lead the watcher to see something you want them too

Frame rate is key in filming. However, by varying the speed at which the image is

captured, various effects can be created knowing that the faster or slower recorded image will be

played at a constant speed. Giving the cinematographer even more freedom for creativity and

expression to be made. (Basic Cinematography Lighting Techniques.). The Frame rate when
Andrews 5

filming is very important and needs to be correct when filming. Because it all depends on what

speed you want to control it if you want slow motion you want higher speeds cause more frames

per second means the slower you can play and the more smooth it will be.

The film editor works with the raw footage, selecting shots and combines them into

sequences which create a finished motion picture. Film editing is described as an art or skill, the

only art that is unique to cinema, separating filmmaking from other art forms that preceded it,

although there are close parallels to the editing process in other art forms such as poetry and

novel writing. (Reichsman, Ethan B). Editing is one of the most important parts in filmmaking it

what makes it come together and what makes things that can’t be real all of a sudden real. It also

provides the time to make things make sense and organize the movie. Editing can be one of the

longest and even hardest thing about filmmaking and trying to still have that creative touch that

you need and want in a film.

A lot of arts, some feel that talent cannot be taught. With respect to filmmaking, i think

that learning techniques and understanding the business with an education is really important. to

one's success as a filmmaker. Going to school and learning hands on equipment is important in

being a filmmaker because you can learn everything and have a head start in the career. So in

conclusion i found that doing this essay has made me want to learn more about filmmaking and

the career.
