Santiago Airport Background

The airport was built between 1961 and

1967 and was originally called “Aeropuerto
Internacional Pudahuel”; it replaced Los
Cerrillos Airport. The name of the airport
was subsequently rechristened in honor of
the founder of the Chilean Air Force: Arturo
Merino Benítez during the 1970s.

The facility was expanded in 1994 with a new international terminal. This
expansion added jetways, a duty-free zone, hotel, and greater parking.
The airport was damaged during the 2010 Chile Earthquake. The airport
authority had closed off all flight operations for the 24 hours after around
1200 UTC on February 27.

Arturo Merino Benítez

International Airport (SCL) is
located 16 kilometers (10 miles)
north-west of Santiago city
centre. A busy and efficient
airport, it handles flights to and
from other South American
locations as well as being used
by many major international airlines.

The airport has many passenger facilities throughout its two terminals. As
well as numerous ATMs (cash machines), bureau de change areas located
throughout the terminal building and three full-service banks, the airport
can also boast a good choice of bars, restaurants, coffee shops and snack
bars. In addition, shopping is excellent, with many stores selling all kinds of
popular and unique items. There are also four tempting duty-free stores at
the complex. For the business traveler, the International Terminal has its
own business centre that can be hired in advance.

Quick Installation Guide
FS2004

You will have to add two scenery folders to the Scenery Library, one which
is the airport Santiago_SCEL, the other the terrain, Santiago_Terrain, more
details on installing:

For installation it is manually, adding the scenery to the Scenery Library, by

clicking SETTINGS, SCENETY LIBRARY, and choose the folder FS/Addon
Scenery/LatinVFR/Santiago_SCEL, then the same for Santiago_Terrain,
make sure you restart FS2004 for the scenery to become activated.

FSX

You will have to add just one scenery folder in the Scenery Library.

For installation it is manually, adding the scenery to the Scenery Library, by

clicking SETTINGS, SCENETY LIBRARY, and choose the folder FS/Addon
Scenery/LatinVFR/Santiago_SCEL.

Performance

For FS2004 we have made some objects disappear when putting the
scenery complexity setting in NORMAL. These objects are the 3D papi
lights, the approach lights and vehicles in the highway. Make sure you have
the SCENERY SHADOWS disabled, we have implemented our own shadows
which won’t hurt performance. Other things such as AI traffic will normally
have a significant impact but that is up to your system.

For FSX, make sure you have the shadows off; we have implemented our
own shadows which will help tremendously performance. Other than that,
the scenery will run pretty smoothly in FSX.

Review the frequently asked questions to disable animations in FS9 to

boost performance.

General Flying Tips
When in Virtual Cockpit, cockpit or external views, pull the zoom
back using the "-" (minus) key all the way to 0.50- This view may not
be to everyone's taste, but it has the effect of making all the ground
textures much, much crisper. With today’s widescreen monitors it
also provides a realistic field of view.

This may not apply to everyone, but sometimes setting frame rate to
unlimited can provide for smoother flights, but at the slight expense
of some blurring and the occasional stutter. This is the opposite
experience to FS9, where locked frames always performed best. This
also works best since FSX-Acceleration/SP2 was released. Try this for
yourself to see if it helps add some smoothness.

LatinVFR [LatinHubs] SCEL Santiago International Airport Version 1.0 User Guide – May 2010 -8-
SHIFT+ O (not zero, but the letter O) allows you to look around using
your mouse in most views, and simulates head movement. Use the
mouse scroll wheel to zoom in or out on areas of interest. The "-
"(minus) key held down is a simple way to zoom back out more
quickly. It's a poor man's TrackIR!

Try to keep your Windows desktop resolution the same as that used
by FSX. Believe it or not, running FSX at the highest resolution your
monitor and video card combination can support, will yield better
visuals and smoother frame rates than bringing your screen
resolution down to an artificially lower value.

When exploring the SCEL surroundings for the first time, don’t be in a
rush and dash across the landscape in your fastest aircraft at 500
knots. Grab the microlight motorized glider and press the “S” until
the view changes to directly behind it. Press and hold “-“ to zoom
right out, then use SHIFT+O to freely look around. Crank up the
throttle with F4 and swing your mouse from side to side as if to move
your head. You’ll be amazed how much fun it is using that
combination. Give it a try!

Frequent Questions and Answers

1- Why don’t the jetways move to the aircraft?

That is because they are static, and we are planning to implement AES in
the future which would allow animated jetways and other AES
functions. This reducing the performance hit as well, as, if every jetway
was animated as you can imagine the workload would be a lot greater to
run the scenery smoothly.

2- Why are there animations in FS9 and no animations in FSX?

This is because FSX has native animations and FS9 doesn’t. Plus if we
had put in those animations, they would interfere with the native
animations of FSX.

3- Why the photo scenery looks

better for FSX and not for FS9?

This is because the FSX platform allows

for better ground resolution getting to
the low centimeters per pixel, whilst
FS9 goes higher than 5 meters.

4- Is the mesh compatible with other mesh?

Yes it is compatible with any other mesh, just make sure we are always
in higher priority.

5- I want to get rid of the animations (FS9) how do I do it?

All you will need to do is simply delete the file located in FS/Addon
Scenery/LatinVFR/Santiago_SCEL/ Scenery called: SCLanimationsFS9.bgl

LatinVFR [LatinHubs] SCEL Santiago International Airport Version 1.0 User Guide – May 2010 - 10 -
6- Tower doesn’t clear me
for takeoff when on the
holding point. Why not?

That is because the holding

points are located accurately as
in the real world a bit far from
the runway disabling AFCAD
from knowing your position
near the runway. If you move a bit closer to the active runway, this is
the only known solution and is also found in other payware sceneries
trying to accurately depict the airport.

7- Why aren’t they static aircraft?

Static aircraft are becoming a thing of the past with all of the new
freeware and payware traffic programs. They cause a frame rate hit, as
well as complications when pilots are connected to online servers such
as Vatsim or IVAO, we spent the time adding more important airport
detail.

8- Why aren’t the charts included in the package?

That is because the charts are available free in this site, having them in
the package will increase the size of the download and increase the time
you, the customer, has to wait in order to enjoy our product!
