This is a reflection of a video of a lesson I did with one of the 7th grade men’s choir
classes at Bull Run Middle School. I am not able to post the video due to seeing the faces and
This was on my last day of teaching at Bull Run. My 7th grade men’s choir had been
working on this piece for the entire time I have been with them. One of the biggest things you
can see in this video is the hesitancy by the students to sing out. They are consistently very
quiet. I have tried a lot of different things to try to boost their confidence throughout the
semester. The notes that they sing are usually mostly correct, and they are very accurate for
their age group. However, I am still struggling to get them to sing out. Pacing wise, I think I did a
good job of keeping things moving throughout the lesson. Most of the transitions were good,
and I didn’t lose their focus too much to the point where it took a long time to get it back. One
of my downfalls is that I can occasionally get too sidetracked with conversations with the
students, and this happened this day mostly due to the fact that it was my last day with them
and they had a lot of questions, so we chatted a bit. On the same token, I feel that these
conversations also helped me build working relationships with these students that lead to them
trusting me and we were able to accomplish more during our time together.
