Competency 001

Competency one focuses on developing a shared vision and school culture with high expectation from
all stakeholders. I have witnessed administrators on two campuses tackle this competency. At the
lower I feel that the administrator could have developed a clearer vision for the staff members to work
towards while the administrator at the high school did a great job. She held a campus meeting with all
stakeholders on campus and was very detailed on how she expected her campus to fun like a fine oiled
machine. She was very clear on what was expected and most importantly always had her door open. It
is also vital to include parents in the shared vision and school culture. If the students see that their
parents are active within the school, the student will have a higher chance of success. It is critical to not
only include parents, but to invite the parents to come to the school and investigate what is going on at
their child’s campus.

Competency 002

Competency two deals focuses on working with stakeholders, responding to diverse interests, and
mobilizing resources. I have witnessed how my administrator maintains a connection with all
stakeholders through numerous forms of communication. The forms of communication that my
administrator utilized were through emails, robocalls, social media and meetings. Social media plays a
vital part of our daily lifestyle, it is crucial to use this form of communication to our advantage. One
great way to utilize this tool is to post every positive thing that happens at your campus on social media.
Negative post will always make their way to social media, but the positive needs to be highlighted.
Being a coach, I am at numerous athletic events. I always admired how my administrator would greet
and work the football field stands, the gym or the baseball diamond.

Competency 003

Competency three focuses on the administrator acting with integrity, fairness, ethics, and legally. Many
times an administrator gets involved when the issue at hand has not been able to be resolved between
the teacher and the parent. By the time it lands on the administrator’s desk, the parents are upset and
the teacher is frustrated. It is critical that the administrator take on this issue with integrity and fairness.
If the administrator is not capable of handling the situation correctly, parents will not trust you as an
administrator and all relationships will be destroyed. The parents need to know that when they walk
into the administrator’s office that they will be treated with respect the disagreement will be resolved in
a fair manner. While rules and laws are constantly changing, the administrator must always be willing to
learn new rules, ideas, and methods of doing things. It is critical the administrator is a life-long learner.

Competency 004

Competency four focuses on the facilitation of the design and implementation of the curricula. This is a
vital key that helps with the success of the students and teachers. It is critical that the administrator
uses research-based practices to help teachers understand whether the strategies they are using are
working or not. A successful administrator must push their teachers to use the assessments they are
having their students complete to gather data that will help the teacher understand weaknesses that
need to be addressed. I feel that this is where I need to improve as an administrator. I see this
competency similar to building a game plan for the upcoming game. As an administrator, you need to
build a game plan to address the weaknesses of the campus to make it the best campus it can be.
Competency 005

Competency five focuses advocating, nurturing, and sustaining an instructional program and culture that
will foster learning. An instructional program is the educational backbone of the school. The
administrator must always be eager to find new ideas and strategies that will help the school become
the best school it can be. In order to get each stakeholder to buy into the campus vision, they must
believe that the administrator will support them. This is where I feel that my coaching experience will
help me unite my teachers and motivate them to work as one solid unit to help reach the campus vision.
The principal must be able to create a united front so that all stake holders work in unison. If the
administrator cannot create a team environment, stakeholders will begin to work in their own direction
and forget about the campus vision.

Competency 006

Competency six focuses on staff development. Staff development can make or break a campus. While I
was working at the elementary levels, teachers were allowed to meet independently and address their
own staff development as they see fit. The problem with that was the staff development began about
how to become better teachers for about ten minutes then it turned in a gripe fest about their students
and neighboring grade levels. A new administrator came in and addressed this matter. A principal was
always present in the staff development meetings. Another important change was giving the teacher a
voice. Teachers were able to give their input on professional development. By giving the teachers a
voice and showing them that it truly meant something, the teachers bought into the professional
development process. This also improved the overall culture of the campus and united the teachers as
one.

Competency 007

Competency seven focuses on the administrator being able to manage the campus. The administrator
must be able to delegate responsibilities throughout the campus within their staff. This is one thing that
I tend to struggle with. I am the type of person who wants to do everything because I feel that at times
people may feel that I am bossy. I need to be able to clear this hurdle and delegate the responsibilities
within my staff. If I try to do everything, it will lead to me getting overwhelmed and falling behind on my
duties. Many times an administrator encounters situations that call for a change. Most importantly, the
administrator must be open with staff and always be truthful. This will gain their trust, which will make
any changes that needs an easy transition.

Competency 008

Competency eight focuses on budgeting, personnel and resource management. I feel that budgeting is a
skill that will sharpened with experience. It is vital that administrator creates a budget that will allow
the campus to perform at its highest level. It is also crucial that the administrator keep up with the laws
regarding the budget and money. It is crucial to have a system that ensures that paperwork is always
kept to prove how the money was spent. An administrator must be able to make the best out of
whatever is provided.

Competency 009

Competency nine focuses on dealing with the physical plant of the school. The principal must ensure
that the day to day operations of the school operate smoothly and efficiently. It is vital for the
administrator to provide a safe learning environment that will foster learning. It is also crucial for the
administrator to practice emergency situations so that if they were arise, all staff and students know
how to react. A good administrator must be able to make smart decisions on the fly. This skill comes
with experience, mistakes will be made but it is critical for the administrator to learn from their mistakes
and strive to improve as an administrator on a daily basis.
