Purpose:

The purpose of this document is to provide a general understanding to LG Multi-V control

system supplied by Al Hassan Ghazi Ibrahim Shaker Company (HGISC) & LG to the housing
expansion project at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST).

Scope:

HGISC scope will be limited to the supply, install, testing & commissioning of the below control
items as per the manufacturer recommendation, the required work of conduit, and all necessary
civil or electrical work will be carried out by the main contractor (M/s Al Bawani).

Project overview

The housing expansion project at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology
(KAUST) is consist of 300 townhouses, there are 2 main types of townhouse which is “Type A &
Type B”. A certain group of townhouses had been combined together to form a total number of
82 clusters, these clusters are divided into 5 different types (A4, A6, B2, BC4 & BC6).

Regardless of the type of the townhouse a single outdoor unit of 14HP having the model of
“ARUN140LTH4” has been selected to cover the required cooling load. The selected outdoor
unit is connected (via a loop of refrigerant copper piping & a loop of communication cables) to a
group of six number of indoor units in a townhouse of Type A, and to seven number of indoor
units in a townhouse of Type B.

General Overview of VRF System:

Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems vary the flow of refrigerant to indoor units based
on demand. This ability to control the amount of refrigerant that is provided to fan coil units located
throughout a building makes the VRF technology ideal for applications with varying loads or where
zoning is required.

A VRF system is available as heat pump system that allow for a single operation mode either
cooling or heating and it doesn’t support the simultaneous heating and cooling operation.

In a VRF system, multiple indoor fan coil units may be connected to one outdoor unit. The outdoor
unit has one or more compressors that are inverter driven, so their speed can be varied by
changing the frequency of the power supply to the compressor. As the compressor speed
changes, so does the amount of refrigerant delivered by the compressor.

Each indoor fan coil unit has its own electronic expansion valve (EEV) and metering device that
is controlled by the indoor unit itself, or by the outdoor unit. As each indoor unit sends a demand

to the outdoor unit, the outdoor unit delivers the amount of refrigerant needed to meet the
individual requirements of each indoor unit.

General Sequence of Operation of Multi V System:

Step 1: Inspect for successful installation of equipment.

Step 2: Terminal power connection and communication cable check between indoor units to
outdoor units

Step 3: Addressing needs to be done for each indoor units in the system

Step 4: Indoor units will be switched on through thermostat.

Step 5: Command or signal from IDUs shall be communicated to micom of ODUs.

Step 6: Once ODUs receives the signal, based on the load the compressors are started.

Step 7: In case of single module having two compressor initial start will be first compressor @
15Hz and will continue to run till it reaches 90Hz. If in this case the target pressure or the requires
load is not achieved second compressor start @ 45Hz and both the compressor tries to reach the
target pressure or target load by increasing its frequency up to maximum150Hz. In case of Master
and Slave arrangement one compressor on the each module will switch on @ 15Hz and will
continue to run till it reaches 90Hz. If in this case the target pressure or required load is not
achieved then the remaining compressor from each module will start @ 45Hz and all the
compressors will operate to reach the target pressure or target load by increasing its frequency
to 150Hz maximum.

Step 8: Deciding factor for the target pressure and required load is based on the indoor room
thermostat set temperature, actual room temperature and ambient temperature.

Step 9: Depending on the above deciding factor indoor micom send signal to outdoor micom.
Depending on the actual target pressure outdoor decides the outdoor fan operating speed,
compressor hertz (Hz) and flow of refrigerant to the complete system. Based on the load
requirement, the Electronic Expansion Valve (EEV) will regulate the flow of refrigerant to achieve
the desired load.

Step 10: Similar way of operation is carried out during low cooling demand and outdoor along with
indoor EEV maintains the indoor set room temperature.

System Breakdown

A VRF system typically consists of one or more outdoor units from which refrigerant is piped to a
series of indoor fan coil units serving individual zones within building spaces. Figure 6.1.1 shows
the VRF System Components.

Location & Function of Control Sub-Items:

For KAUST project there are 3 levels of control systems, level 1 is local control system
(individual controller), level 2&3 are a responsible to provide a central control function. The
location & function of each level has been discussed in more details as shown below:

Level 1- local control: Wired Remote Control (PREMTB001):

A 'local control' for each indoor unit which is dedicated to serve a certain air-conditioned
zone. The local control is provided via wired remote controller (RC) mounted within the occupied
space. The RC for that indoor unit provides individual start/stop, run/fail indication, set point
adjustment, fault code diagnosis, scheduling, etc. the features & function of the selected model
“PREMTB001” is been listed as shown in Figure 6.1.1

* For Ceiling Concealed Duct type
** Centralized control (PACS4B000 / PACP4B000 / PQNFB17C0 / PLNWKB000) and PDI (PQNUD1S40 / PPWRDB000) should be installed for this function
1) Indoor unit should have functions requested by the controller

Level 2- Central control: Touch-Screen “AC-EZ Touch” (PACEZA000):

Since all indoor units for each type of townhouse has been connected to a single outdoor
unit, A touch-screen (AC-EZ touch) central controller (CC) will be provided for each town house,
to provide total or individual start/stop, run/fail indication, set point adjustment, fault code
diagnosis, scheduling, etc. for that group of indoor units located in a certain townhouse

As the main function of CC is to provide central controlling feature for the end user (The Tenant),
the CC should located in easy accessible area such as the ground floor entrance lobby.

The Touch-Screen “AC-EZ Touch” has a feature of web access if it’s connected to the internet
from any web browser. For that reason arrangement to access to the LAN should be considered
during design and installation.

The features and function of the AC-EZ Touch” (PACEZA000) are listed as shown Figure 6.1.1
below:

1) Assignment of public IP address is required to access central controller through internet please contact regional office to have detailed Internet connection
configuration
2) Power consumption monitoring feature require a PDI accessory which is not included in our offer to KAUST

Level 3- Central control & Gateway: “ACP BACnet®” (PQNFB17C0):

The ACP BACnet® (PQNFB17C0) is central controller & gateway provided by LG and used
for projects to allow user who wants to integrate LG Air Conditioning system with Building
Management System “BMS” using BACnet protocol (if it’s applicable).

In case that the BMS isn’t applicable on the project ACP BACnet can be connected to customer's
own PC and work as central controller to provide an efficiently control and monitor for various
types of connected equipment.

The ACP BACnet® has a feature of web access if it’s connected to the internet from any web
browser. For that reason arrangement to access to the LAN should be considered during design
and installation.

The ACP BACnet® is third level of control provided for KUAST project. Each cluster will be having
one device located in utility room & connected to the LAN via Ethernet cable.

The features and function of the ACP BACnet® (PQNFB17C0) are listed as shown Figure 6.1.1
below:
