ECD 133 Preschool MATH Learning Plan Format Name: Ashlyn Bray

Activity Name: Grid Game Age of Child(ren): 3 -4 year olds

Setting: Individual. Small group.

Developmental Focus: Cognitive.

Key Content Focus: Math

Key Content Area Concepts: Number Sense.

Key Content Area Skills: Children will count the number on the dice and place
that many flowers on the grid.

Learning Outcomes: The child will be able to match the number on the dice to
the amount of spaces on the grid.
ELS: M- 3K-2.1 (old) Show curiosity and interest in counting and number.
ELS: M-4K-2.2 (old) Show one-to-one correspondence through ten when
counting real objects.

Materials to collect/prepare:
 Grid with 20 spaces
 Dice with dots
 Dice with numbers
 Flowers (markers to lay on the grid)

Transition/warm up/introduction:
 I will start by introducing the different dice to the children, making sure
they can read both the number die and the dot die. Making sure they
know the 4 dots correspond to the number four. I will have them practice
rolling the dice (some children have trouble rolling smaller dice).
 Next I will introduce the grid board as well as the markers.

Adult-guided Procedures: (use as many or as few steps as needed)

1. Show the child the dice
2. Watch them roll the dice a few times while telling me the number they
landed on
3. Introduce the grid
4. Demonstrate rolling the dice, and pick up the corresponding number of
flowers to lay down on each box.

Child-guided Procedures: (use as many or as few steps as needed)

1. Tell the teacher the numbers on the dice
2. Practice rolling the dice by myself
3. Watch the teacher demonstrate the game
4. Play the game with the teacher or with another student
Conversation to Support Learning/Talking with Children:
1. “Can you tell me what number this is?” (going all the way around the
dice)
2. “If the dice lands on this number, how many flowers do we pick up?”
3. “Can you show me how to roll the dice?”

Observations and Assessment:

 I will watch the children roll the dice and count the number on the dice,
then I will watch as they count out the correct number of flowers and lay
them out on the grid.

Accommodations for individuals:

Scaffolding down: I will have the children roll the dice on their own, but I
will help them count out the number on the dice. Or I will only provide them with
the dice that has the number symbol on it rather than the dot dice.

Scaffolding up: I will give them both dice and have them alternate the
dice on each turn.
