Reflection Over the English 1301 course

The Review, Report, and Visual Rhetorical Analysis essays have all taught me how to

write. Coming into Composition 1, I had zero knowledge on how a proper essay would look. I

overthought all my assignment and tried to sound smarter with complex words. It made it harder

on my part and it caused stress for myself and the people around me. I plan to improve as a

writer by reflecting over my writing style and assignment and explaining how I plan to get better.

At the beginning of the semester, I would apply multiple comma splices and the word

“and”. After viewing the English tutor, she taught me that I would repeat myself and would

babble off. Which is understandable since it is hard for me to stay on the subject that I am

discussing. I found it easier to do everything at the last minute; it gave me pressure to do my

assignments. It made me focus on the subjects I want to focus on. As well as having a good

friend of mine to review my assignments. She would give me great feedback that helped me

improve even if it meant starting all over. My writing style has not changed but has improved on

my writing.

The review, report, and visual rhetorical analysis have influenced my writing and

personal life. The review essay was the first assignment I worked on. The essay was over a

potential career that I was willing to pursue. Even before doing the assignment I knew that I

wanted to be in Hotel Management but as I did more research the career seem to intrigue me

more. The review essay was one of the hardest assignments because it involved actual work. The

report essay was my favorite assignment; I did it over the kneeling of football players

controversy. It gave me insight of how different people think and how important the National

Anthem is to Americans. As I was writing the report, I found the history of the National Anthem

and there was so much information. It used to be against the law to sit during the National

Anthem. This piece of information is what made my assignment interesting and allowed me to

follow up on the subject. The Visual Rhetorical Analysis was by far the most stressful

assignment I had ever done. It was interesting but it felt rushed and with all the other kinds of

classes assigning essays as well as this one. If I had a chance to redo the assignment I would.

These assignments helped me learn new views on ideas and information that improved my

knowledge on other people’s views.

I plan on becoming a better writer. Composition 1 has woken me up to realize I am not as

good of a writer as I thought. I will continue my education on writing by taking Composition 2.

Hopefully that will help with my grammar errors. As well as doing higher leveled assignments I

will finish my essays earlier to meet with a tutor to review assignments. I hope to be a skilled

writer soon.

I have learned how to fix my mistakes with another person’s assistance. Many of my

assignments have involved basic knowledge that I did not know about. The problems I face are

fixable if I keep on visit someone for help. I need to free my mind to think and write out my

assignments on its own. Although this semester was hard, I am happy to say this is my last essay

for a while.
