NO ARTICLE

Non usiamo alcun articolo quando parliamo di categorie generali di

cose e dunque usiamo spesso il plurale (Animals, people,
schools…oppure love, peace, friendship…)

A/AN
Usiamo l’articolo indeterminativo come in italiano: quando una
cosa viene introdotta per la prima volta nella conversazione o
quando ci riferiamo ad una parte di una categoria generale di
cose (es. A dog can be really loving).

THE
Usiamo l’articolo determinativo quando la cosa in questione è già
stata introdotta prima nella conversazione o quando ci si
riferisce ad una parte più specifica di una categoria. Oppure nei
seguenti casi:

• quando si tratta di cose uniche al mondo (es. The sun, the moon,
the stars)
• quando si parla di luoghi specifici o in cui andiamo
frequentemente (the cinema, the supermarket, the bank, the
shopping centre, the gym etc.)

• quando si parla di istituzioni (the Government, the school, the

Police, the State, the Law…)

• Quando il cognome rappresenta l’intera famiglia (The Smiths, The

Sloans, The Brambillas…)

NON USIAMO MAI ‘THE’

• Con le nazioni: Italy, Poland, Germany, France… (eccezion fatta

per The USA, the Emirates, the Philippines, the UK, ovvero
quando sono congregazioni di staterelli o isole)

• Nomi propri di persona e di negozi (Rinascente, Zara, Esselunga

etc)

• Con preposizioni NEXT e LAST (last summer, next Wednesday)
