type of labor. The website “A21” explains that human trafficking is the exploitation of a person

through force, and It can be associated to sex trafficking. It can also be seen in different forms

such as child labor, migrant working, and domestic work. The Journalist at “Ted Talks” narrates

her personal story with human trafficking and she states that human trafficking takes place all

over the world regardless of a nation's wealth. It is estimated that there are more than 21 million

victims of human trafficking worldwide.

The opening of the website delivers an intriguing image featuring a young girl inside a

room with poor conditions with a caption that reads “Human trafficking” As one scrolls down

there’s a powerful quotation with big white bold letters that reads “Human trafficking is slavery”

underneath that there is a link to a hotline one can reach in need of help. The website is very

interactive. There’s certain tabs one can click on if they're looking for a specific answer. It sets

the problem and they propose a solution. This type of communication can be marked down as a

typography and iconography due to the fact that it is a website and it presents several videos. The

ted talk delivers all the information towards an audience. Noy Thrupkaew starts by giving her

personal experience and then she continues by explaining all the different types of human

trafficking there is. This type of genre goes down as an oral communication. Even though their

way of communicating towards an audience is different the tonality of both genres is very

meaningful. Additionally they share the same formal style with facts that can be proven and their

goal is also similar. The website and the video try to persuade humans to join the fight against

human trafficking.

Audience and Purpose

The intended audience for each genre is very similar. The website “A21” targets mainly

victims or people that suspect that someone else might need the help. They provide the hotline

for 12 different countries including the USA. If one clicks the country they’re located at twice it

immediately connects one to an operator. Even though the primary audience are victims of

human trafficking the website targets everyone that wants to help. They list different signs of

human trafficking. They’re purpose is to inform any victim out there that they’re not alone and

they’re willing to help. While they also persuade one to contribute to the end against human

trafficking by donating or reporting people that might be suspects. They want the audience to

Rhetorical Issues: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos

The website is reliable because it is up to date. Christine Caine is the founder of the website she

is an Australian activist, evangelist, author, and international speaker. There’s a tab that reads

“about” the tab contains three different subtitles including “who we are, where we work, and our

solution” They operate in 14 different locations across the globe. They also state that they’re not

a non profit corporation and they’re registered with the Registry of Charitable Trusts. They also

provide their facebook, instagram, twitter, and youtube. The video proves their reliability by

providing details about the talk including the profile of the global journalist Noy Thrupkaew.

The video can be heard in 26 different languages, they provide further reading and their

references. Even though the video was released in 2015 the video is still reliable.

“A21” appeals a lot to one's emotions right out the bat. They come out with a strong

sentence that makes one feel heartbroken. The words being used such as “abuse, forced, slavery,

and violent” makes one feel sorry for the people that are involved in this type of situation. The

website tries to evoke awareness by listing things that can lead to human trafficking. The

journalist speaking at ted talks evokes sad emotions to the audience by speaking about her

personal experience as a child. Throughout her speech Noy Thrupkaew states different examples

of human trafficking that are going on in the day of the common man. One of her example was

that 68% of human trafficking was for the purpose of creating the goods and delivering the

services most of us rely on every day. (Thrupkaew,2015)

Furthermore, the website provides information that can be used to combat the crime.

Most traffickers use different methods to induct their victims. The website states that by knowing

how the traffickers get their victims one is able to stop them before starting. In today's modern

world full of technology it has become more accessible to this market to be displayed. On an

average human trafficking pulls more money than drugs coming into the United States which

means that human trafficking encompasses greater territory than the illicit drug market. Noy

Thrupkaew states that the most essential workers are the most underpaid and most exploited

workers. (Thrupkaew, 2015) Humans are lied to, assaulted, threatened, and manipulated into

working under poor inhumane conditions.

Conclusion and Synthesis

It is common knowledge that human trafficking has become a very lucrative in the black

market on a global level, this affects many countries and their economies because all the money

made in human trafficking can not be realistically accounted for which creates an economy on its

own. In short, human trafficking involves recruitment of people into a situation of enslavement

through the use of deception, violence, and force to work against their own will. This issue can

be looked just like drug trafficking, it may seem impossible to stop but we can start by bringing

awareness. Both of the genres achieved its purpose. However, the speech with Noy Thrupkaew

was more effective in conveying its message because the audience was able to listen throughout

a couple of minutes and it was interesting.
