Ballet/Tap/Tumble Combo…
a one-hour class where dancers will learn basic steps and terminology in Ballet, Tap, and Tumbling.
This Combo class is designed to introduce these skills to young students through imagination activities
and movement games. Students learn basic discipline, class etiquette, and dance technique in a fun
and active environment.
Ballet…
the foundation of all dance forms and maximizes a dancer’s technique and longevity in a career of
dance. In this class, dancers will learn Ballet positions, steps, and movements. It provides grace, poise,
and technique needed to be proficient in all other areas of dance. Ballet classes will help dancers with
posture, flexibility, fitness, balance, self-discipline, and self-confidence.
Tap…
designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Students will learn a variety of tap steps and styles. The
class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique, producing clear tap sounds, and developing a
musical awareness.
Jazz…
focuses on learning proper technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality,
and developing an understanding of complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to
various styles of jazz that will challenge their artistry, increase their presence on stage, and develop
strength and speed in their movements.
Hip-Hop…
a high-energy class that infuses many styles from street dancing and funk to Jazz and other
mainstream dance styles. Hip hop teaches rhythm, coordination, and balance through aerobic
movements set to fun, upbeat music. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by
bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Students must be enrolled in
Jazz to attend.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS CONT.
Contemporary…
sometimes referred to as Lyrical, is a fluid form of dance that encourages the dancer to interpret his or her
movement with feeling, emotion and style. Dancers learn to express a concept, emotion, or story through
their physicality and artistic choices. This style combines the fluid beauty of Ballet with the sharper edges of
Jazz or Modern. Students must be enrolled in Ballet to attend.
Modern…
focus on contractions, spirals, basic floor work, and concepts of energy/muscular efficiency, concepts of
space, and musicality. Students learn the basics of classical modern dance techniques while exploring new
methods of movement. Modern classes at AIM combine the techniques of Graham, Horton, Limon, and
Duncan.
Pre-Pointe…
a nonperformance class that focuses on building strength in the feet and ankles, while incorporating
elements of balance and control in preparation for Pointework. Students can begin Pre-Pointe as early as 7
years old but cannot be fitted for pointe shoes until the age of 10. Students must have two years of Ballet
experience and currently enrolled in Ballet to attend.
Pointe…
Is a class for students who wish to elevate their Ballet technique to the next level. Pointe classes require
each student to use special Pointe shoes designed to increase the dancer’s ankle strength and flexibility
while working on classical Ballet technique. These students receive additional exposure to classical Ballet
repertoire from famous Ballets like Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, and others. All pointe classes
are designed for students with previous ballet training. Students must complete the Pre-Pointe program
and be enrolled in Ballet to attend.
Musical Theater…
focuses on applying and infusing the disciplines of acting and dancing to train students to truly multitask on
stage. Musical Theater classes strengthen these elements through a Broadway-style repertoire, interpreting
choreography both musically and dramatically, and translating it into a performance worthy of a Broadway
stage. Students must be enrolled in Jazz to attend.
Leaps/Turns/Tricks (L/T/T)…
a nonperformance class created for the serious dancer who wishes to give extra attention to improving
their technique. This class will focus on the proper execution of advanced leaps and turns and will include
leap combinations and turn sequences. Dancers will be provided with the tools and “tricks” to help them take
their technical performance to the next level. Students must be enrolled in Jazz to attend.
Acrobatics/Tumbling…
or “Acro,” is a nonperformance class designed to teach dancers basic acrobatic movements. Acro focuses
on increasing flexibility, strength, balance, coordination, endurance, body awareness, and self-discipline.
Movements are designed to supplement students’ dance technique and is not intended to teach advanced
gymnastic tricks. Dancers will learn a combination of back bends, cartwheels, walkovers, chin stands, and
aerials.
