Traditional oppressive norms in India have lead to gender inequality among males and

females. Issues such as sexual harassment widely occur in forms of unwanted touches,

looks, etc. An example of this would be if an employer pressures a woman into having

sex with them in return of a promotion Although women are mainly targeted, both men

and women can be victims of sexual harassment. Many cultural groups in India have

something that is called the "son preference" because they are believed to guarantee

financial security. This devalues the role of a woman in India more than it already

is.Women have a secondary status at not only home, but the workplace too. This affects

their health, financial status, and education. These women are malnourished since they

are usually the last ones to eat and they are also the last to receive medical attention.

Another problem that is faced is domestic violence, one out of every three women face

violence from their husband, brother, fathers, uncles, etc. within their own homes. The

abuse can also be rape or sexual harassment and forms of psychological violence such as

verbal abuse. The author of this text feels that one possible solution is that women be

taught self defense, especially in schools.

Transmitted Infection", etc. being the cause of their deaths. Although these events are

On page 158 of de Blij's book dowry in India is a topic of discussion. Thousands of girls in

India face Dowry and disputes rise over the price to be paid by the bride's family to the

groom's father. If failed to meet the marriage agreement, the bride is brutally punished

by being burnt, killed, abandoned, etc. Many of the deaths are reported as false such as

saying that it was a kitchen accident. Although dowry deaths are dropping, it still exists

and should be ended.
