1 Scope

1.1 JDS-G113.5 establishes uniform practices of dimensioning and tolerancing, which are used on
Deere & Company engineering models and drawings.

1.2 Figures in this standard are illustrations only. Figures only show the level of detail needed to clarify
the related clause.

1.3 This standard can contain mandatory provisions, which are identified by the words “shall” or
“required”. Compliance with the mandatory provisions is required to claim conformance with this standard.
This standard can also contain guideline provisions, which are generally identified by the words “should” or
“recommended”. Compliance with the guideline provisions is not required, because they might not be
appropriate for all machines or all applications.

2 Terms and Definitions

For purposes of this standard, the terms and definitions in JDS-G113X1 apply.

3 Conformance

3.1 Standards Conformance

The dimensioning and tolerancing used on Deere & Company engineering models and drawings conform
to ASME Y14.5M-1994 (R2004) prior to 2017-07-01. Models and drawings with origination dates on or after
2017-07-01 shall conform to ASME Y14.5-2009 through reference to JDS-G113. John Deere amendments

3.4 Past Dimensioning and Tolerancing Practices

See JDS-G113.5X1 for past practices of dimensioning and tolerancing.

3.5 Use of ISO Specifications on JDS-G113 Drawings and Models

When specified, ISO has a clause that invokes their standards to the entire drawing or model. This does
not apply when the JDS-G113 series is referenced.

If a portion of the ISO GPS system is invoked for a specific feature on a drawing or model, the ISO
requirement only applies to the specified feature.

3.6 Reference to this Standard

All John Deere drawings shall show a note in the title block referencing the JDS-G113 series of standards.
All John Deere models shall contain a note referencing the JDS-G113 series of standards.

4.5 Form Control Does Not Apply (Exceptions to Rule #1) — ASME Y14.5, Clause 2.7.2
4.5.1 STOCK or STK adjacent to a Feature of Size (FoS) specification shall be used to identify stock
specification. Form or other appropriate geometric characteristic shall be used to specify allowable
variation.

4.5.2 When Rule #1 does not apply (example: Independency Symbol, STK, Stock, or PERFECT FORM
AT MMC NOT REQD), the form control value may be larger than the size tolerance. (Reference
ASME Y14.5-2009 clause 5.4.1.1 and clause 5.4.2).

4.5.3 When Rule #1 does not apply, a form control shall be specified. (Reference ASME Y14.5-2009
clause 2.7.3).

4.5.4 See JDS-G113.5X2 for additional illustrative examples identifying STOCK as well as Independency
Symbol applications.

4.6 Number of Places

4.6.1 The use of n PLACES on a drawing or in a model shall define a grouping of features. The geometric
characteristics applied to this group shall be considered as SEP REQT with respect to other feature control
frames (FCFs) and to the other instances of the defined group – unless otherwise specified.

4.6.2 The use of n PLACES on a drawing or in a model shall define an individual feature or groups of
features in more than one place.

4.6.3 See JDS-G113.5X2 for additional illustrative examples identifying n PLACES.

5 Metric Dimension Models and Drawings (Required For New Design)

5.1.1 Measurement Units

All dimensions are shown in millimeters (mm). All surface texture values are shown in micrometers (µm)
per JDS-G113.2. All other units are labeled. See JDS-G168 for unit symbols.

5.1.2 Decimal Points

A period in line with the bottom of the digits is preferred to designate a decimal point. However, a comma
may be used as a decimal point for SI units in countries where the comma is customarily used as a decimal
point in other applications. Decimal points shall be uniform, dense, and large enough to be clearly visible
and to meet the reproducibility requirements of JDS-G113.2.

6 Temporary and Permanent Datum Features

Selected datum features of castings, forgings, or weldments may be used temporarily for the establishment
of machined surfaces to serve as permanent datum features. Such temporary datum features may or may
not be subsequently removed by machining. Temporary datums, which may employ the use of datum
targets, should be labeled with the note ‘FOR MFG’. See Figure 2. Permanent datum features should be
surfaces or diameters not appreciably changed by subsequent manufacturing operations.

Figure 2 Temporary Datum Target

7 Equalizing Datum Targets

To emphasize equalizing datum targets, the note “EQL” is placed near, preferably below, the target. See
Figure 3.

Note 3 ‘EQL’ is not used on V-block equalizing datum targets. See Figure 4.

DISTRIBUTION JDS-G113.5
8 Datum Reference Frames

Datum features are chosen to position the part in relation to a set of three mutually perpendicular planes,
jointly called a datum reference frame. The simulation of datum reference frames in a stated order of
precedence should start at the beginning of the alphabet.

Example A, B, C, D, etc.

9 Zones and Areas for Notes

When there are areas on a model and drawing that specify area or zones that are free of paint or free of
weld and weld spatter, these areas are specified as a chain area (circle, square, rectangle…). The zone or
area is called out as Zone A or Area B. See Figure 5.

Figure 5 Zones and Areas for Notes

10 Assemblies

10.1 Locating Parts and Assembly Features

When locating parts and assembly features in an assembly, these features should be dimensioned from
their datum references. These parts and assembly features should follow form, fit, and function of the
design. The design intent shall be the primary concern, although manufacturing and inspection processes
should be taken into consideration.

10.2 Assembly Datum Targets

Assembly datum targets should be used as fixture points for welding whenever possible. Datum target
zones should be a crosshatched area representing the surface contact of the locating point. When the
dimensions are basic, the established tooling and gaging tolerances apply. When the dimensions are not
basic, display the tolerances on the dimensions.

10.3 Part Identification

10.3.1 The preferred method of identifying all parts of an assembly is by using a chart or table which lists
the complete Bill of Materials (BOM). The minimum number of columns shall be three and shall appear on
all assembly drawings. The three column names shall be ITEM, PART NUMBER and QUANTITY
(abbreviation QTY is acceptable for QUANTITY). See Figure 6 and Figure 7. The chart or table column
headers shall be labeled at the top or bottom and rows shall descend or ascend from the column header in
an alphanumeric order driven by the part numbers. This BOM Table shall not contain any supplier part
numbers or any underscore part numbers that were created by an electronic computer system.

10.3.2 Optional one to three columns may be added if driven by business requirements. These column
names shall be PART NAME, DESCRIPTION, and REV, see Figure 8. These three columns are not
preferred.

10.3.3 It is permissible to have blank sections in some of the columns. This means the part does not have
any pertinent information for this heading.

10.3.4 Assembly drawings shall have all parts identified with the corresponding part number and quantity
of parts used. These parts can be welded parts, bolted or pinned parts, or any other loose parts that make
up that assembly for production. This may be done either by using a chart which lists the bill of materials of
the assembly (see Figure 9) or by using a note with a leader. The second alternative is not recommended
for new design (see Figure 10).

10.3.6 Drawings shall display the item numbers as balloons with leaders; see Figure 9. The item number
should be displayed only once on the drawing with a leader that is attached to a part in one of the
orthographic views which best identifies the part.

Figure 9 Appearance of BOM and Balloons on Drawing

10.3.7 The following method was used on older drawings, but is not recommended for new designs. A
note with a leader is attached to a part in the orthographic view which best identifies the part. The item
number calls out the part number and the quantity of parts used. See Figure 10. The quantity is labeled
with the total number of parts followed by an ‘X’.

DISTRIBUTION JDS-G113.5
10.4 Locating Parts from Existing Features
When using an existing feature from a detail part as a datum or locating dimension, use a reference
dimension callout on the feature. This allows the interpreter of dimensioning to know what is the MMC or
LMC of a dimension. See Figure 11.

Figure 11 Locating Parts from Existing Features

10.5 Weld Numbers

A weld number may be called out in the reference area of a weld symbol. The weld number is a numbering
system which identifies each weld with a name. Numbering begins at the right side of a drawing and
increases sequentially to the left. Put a sequential number on each weld symbol beginning at 1. Once a
weld symbol is added or deleted on revisions, never reuse old numbers. To keep track of last number used
on large drawings, add a note: “LAST WELD NUMBER USED — (Number of Weld)”. See Figure 12.
