TURN AND TALK WITH A PARTNER:

Give me the CONNOTATION and

DENOTATION of any word.
Pick one between you- be
prepared to explain why you
chose those connotations for
that word.
WHAT I S A CLOSE READING?

Close reading is . . .
*thoughtful, critical analysis of a text
*that focuses on significant details or patterns
*in order to develop a deep, precise
understanding of the text's form, craft,
meanings, etc.
CLOSE READING FOCUSES ON HIDDEN MEANINGS, which you can
reach by looking at…
● Specific word choices
● Connotation and denotation
● Patterns and rhythms of words
● Style and tone
● References (allusions) to other pieces of text, movies,
Biblical stories, etc.
DENOTATION VS. CONNOTATION
DENOTATION:
THE DICTIONARY definition of the word, meaning the strictly
scientific, well-known, erased from tone, or clinical definition of
a word.

CONNOTATION:
The NON-DICTIONARY definition of a word, the world's cultural
meanings, emotional meaning, tone, overall understanding
known based on the word’s history, context, and secondary
meanings.
Pull out your one-chunk for Ch.3. Today we are
going to practice using connotation and
denotation to improve your commentary.

Chapter 3
Explain the rift between the boys about the
division of labor. What does this foreshadow
for the leadership of the island?
WE WILL BE REVISING THESE LATER IN THE
PERIOD- but keep that original score you gave it
in sight, please.

Chapter 3
Explain the rift between the boys about the
division of labor. What does this foreshadow
for the leadership of the island?
At this moment- score how you feel about your
commentary IN GENERAL, write it down or type it next
to or near your commentary on your Ch.3 chunk.

Just so you know - the average of your one-chunk self

scoring with the sub last Friday was a 3.

Today we are going to learn about using connotation

and denotation to improve your CMs.
