Immigration

Immigrants has been a huge topic today. Where one side believes it’s fine for illegal

immigrants to come and others that it’s not okay. There are many arguments when it comes to

this topic. We have arguments where we feel the need to help people, american or not. We also

have arguments that stay within the law and not cross that line. We can also we arguments from

personal feelings or emotions.

There is a program called DACA that's been discuss, in which The President believes to

cut the program. The first article I read through was about legal status for dreamers. The title of

the article is Most Americans Want Legal Status for ‘Dreamers’. These People Don’t by Miriam

Jordan. The main purpose of this article is whether its a bad decision or not to give legal status to

Dreamers. It's an argument that’s being discussed, there were some valid points from each

argument. One argued that “ we don’t have to be creating new programs or giving them

preferential treatment.” Some people from the government believes that they shouldn’t be

wasting money to support immigration. That the money can go towards helping the american

people or something related to that. That we should put the american people first because

government still hasn’t helped all american people. I know that there are veterans that served this

country, who still need support. That’s something I agree on, that those who served our country

should be treated after there services and make sure that there are maintain. Others believe that

they should have more support because we should be helping. On a website they did a survey

which said “84 percent of those surveyed said they supported legal status for Dreamers.” Which

shows that there is support of legal status towards Dreamers. There was an offer from Trump to

the Democrats to keep the DACA program running for a few years but in exchange for the full

funding of a border wall.

The point to why I believe they want to cut the program is funding. I know money is an

issue for some people and how it should be used in the United States. Some believe it should go

more towards education and healthcare. Also because they may not want to help other people

from other countries because they think it’s not there job. Another view is that some are fine to

work with immigrants and show their support . They are willing to give that legal status if they

earned that right. Legal status is a big deal, it gives them more opportunities on jobs and

education. I feel that they want to cut down the ways to get legal status, to stop expanding and

have limitations. They want to limit the opportunities.

America is being described as a nation of immigrants, and people aren’t happy. In the article Is

America a ‘Nation of Immigrants’? Immigration Agency Says No by Miriam Jordan talks about

why people disagree. They changed the description to what their purpose is, which makes it

sound more about protecting Americans, while the old description seems more “friendly”and

diverse. They changed their wording by still having the same idea of what they do, but change it

in a different tone. “...He had eliminated the word customers in describing the foreign

nationals…”. Customers was a word they eliminated because to them it seemed they attended

more of the foreigners than American people. They want to show that the American people come

first and it's there priority to help them.

The article Breaking Up Immigrant Families: A Look at the Latest Border Tatic by Miriam

Jordan talk about the policy which is breaking families apart. It discusses that a child and

parents crossing the border will now be separated and sent to different locations. The reason for
this, is that someone said that “ The U.S has historically treated immigrants violations as civil,

rather than criminal”. In other words they felt that they should be treated more as criminals and

be more strict towards them. Since this new policy took place “ About 700 children have been

separated” and “.... kept apart for 4 months or longer”. They said they’ll be apart more about 10

days, but now immigration lawyer say that they have been separated for months. Since this news

broke out, many have thoughts about this. One side believes that it’s necessary becauses it’s a

good scare and message for others that plan to cross. That its against the law and they should

face the consenquenes of their actions. Most people don’t agree with the separation of parents

and kids. They believe its cruel and too much. Even though what they did is against the law, and

don’t think separation is the answer to stop illegal immigration to cross. That they should take a

better approach on how to handle the situation.

Many people make assumptions toward others and this last article shows that. John Kelly Says

Undocumented immigrants can’t fit in. That's not Be Best by Z. Byron Wolf is an article that

talks about how immigrants are viewed. They define racism as “ Saying one class of people is

different than another class of people”. This definition is worded to make it sound more “nice”.

Yes, racism points out the differences in race but in a tone that discriminate them is what racism

is. The president views immigrants as them “ bringing their problems, drugs, crime and being

rapist.” This is an example to what racism is, he assumes that everyone is like that. Many others

view immigrants the same way. They believe that immigrants are the problem in the country.

They define all immigrants as a whole than as a individual or groups.

Some in this country believe that getting rid of immigrants will be the solution to solving their

problems in the country. I think there are many solutions to immigration. We do background

checks on people and making sure they have no criminal history. For those that earned to there

way to go to the United States with no criminal history, can be given limited stay in the United

States. What I mean by earned is someone who was education, and has a good job and have

achievements. I know that everyone has different opinions and we cannot just pick one. We have

border wall debate that's going on today. Some think we should have a wall and separate

ourselves. Like the saying that's been brought up alot is “build bridges not walls”. There are also

opinions on helping those that want to cross but also taking caution on who we let in. Another is

not having any cross at all and should take the right steps to get permission to enter the United

States. what some don’t understand is that some people come to the United States for a better life

and a better future for their kids. There are struggles currently in latin countries in which cause

them to leave because they cannot survive the current situation. There has been support towards

those countries from the people of the United States even Trump was against the president of

Venezuela. Even if he says he shows support, in reality there is no action taking place. I think

they have to talk and settle on an agreement that works for them. I think things are being done

towards one's opinion then multiple. Like DACA, I don’t think cutting the program completely is

the answer, but having that discussion and finding a way to make both sides in agreement.

After reading these articles it made me think a lot, it raised and answered questions. It helped me

have a better understand to what's happening and why. Something that changed my thinking was

the different points of views. Though I may not agree to most of them, I have a better

understanding to why and where they come from, on both sides. I see what changes they want to
make, but they are doing it in a way that's more strict and also effects both sides more than is

should.
