ž At the end of the term the student will be able to:
— Identify the legal framework and professional issues relevant to
engineering practice
— Resolve the basic principles of ethics in a professional practice
— Explain the basic types of professional practice and business
organizations
— Recognize the rights and obligations in working relationships
— Differentiate the common forms of contracts used in the
engineering practice
— Evaluate the role of the engineer with respect to environmental
ethics and sustainability
— Illustrate concepts of intellectual property (patents, trademarks,
copyright, etc)
— Recognize the various codes governing the engineering
professional practice
— Recognize the role of communication and life-long learning in a
professional career

Grading scheme UPDATE PARTICIPATION INFO!

ž Participation 3%
— After the add/drop deadline (Sept. 20th), some polling questions will be
used to compile the participation grade. You will be informed when polling
will be used for grading
— Answering the questions on behalf of someone else is considered an
academic offense. Please refer to McGill’s policy on Academic Integrity
and Code of Conduct.
ž Essay on life long learning (details L12) 2%
— One-page essay submitted towards the end of the semester
ž Evaluation of professional engineering skills (details L12) 3%
— Online Survey from the Faculty of Engineering
ž Final exam 45%
— Multiple choice and short-answer questions
— The final exam will cover all material related to the course
— 5% (out of 45%) will be based on questions related to the case studies

The cases study (tutorial) is worth 47%, which is distributed as follows,
and is dependent on presentation group:
• 5% Participation in “Understanding your Case Study” tutorial.
• 7% Peer-evaluation (within each presentation group or team)
• 5% Self-assessment
