synopsis

Dublin Zoo interactive mobile

application for all ages.

purpose

Dublin Zoo is a huge Irish attraction, and one

of the biggest Zoos in the world, but it doesn’t
have an official mobile application. But we see
huge potential to create an app that would be at
the forefront of any other app on the market by
a Zoo.

Taking Dublin Zoo to the next level

digitally is our goal and we feel this is
very achievable.

Is there any need for an app for the Zoo?
No Zoo is in need of an app, but having one
makes a visitors experience in the Zoo even
better as it allows a form of connection that
wouldn’t be there otherwise. It allows visitors
to learn even more about the attractions that
they are there for in the first place, the animals.
Dublin Zoo already has a TV series which allows
viewers to go behind the scenes of the Zoo and
see how the Zookeepers care for the animals,
and this creates a connection between the
viewer and the animals.
Developing an application allows visitors not
only to plan their trip more effectively, but it can
be used as a learning tool, and also include
games for kids to really interact with as many
animals as possible.
Learning about the animals on a deeper level
will give the visitors a sense of connection to
some of these magnificent creatures before
they leave the Zoo, and would hopefully entice
them to come back again.

ZSL London pros

Zoo App • Main Screen is somewhat

nice.
The London Zoo, or Regent’s Zoo, opened
in 1828 which makes it one the oldest Zoos
in the world. The zoo holds a collection of
over 800 species. The Zoos app is far from
impressive and it represents such a popular
Zoo in a bad manner.

cons

• Crashes when I go to the ‘What’s On’

section each time
• Back button not working
• Navigation all over the place
• Buying tickets brings you out of the app
with no way back
• Tour feature doesn’t work
• Cluttered map, very hard to follow
• Barely any content that is of any use

Berlin Zoo pros

App • Interesting Navigation: swiping in different

This zoo – the oldest in Germany – is home
to more than 20,000 animals, spread out
across 1500 species. It welcomes more than
3 million visitors per year, making it the most
popular in all of Europe. Overall their app is
not bad, but has the potential to be much
greater.
directions brings you to different screens.
• Filter System: good idea but done badly.
• Bad weather tour option
• News section: lots of detailed articles, just
poor navigation
• Can choose from a list of animal feedings
and recieve notifications of when this will
happen
• Animal information section

cons

• Map is similar to London Zoo’s, very

cluttered
• Can’t book through the App
• Not a great range of features
• Navigation buttons on the bottom aren’t
very useful

Edinburgh Zoo
App
Set over 82 acres of sloping parkland, RZSS
Edinburgh Zoo is home to over 1,000 rare
and endangered animals. Edinburgh zoo is
the first zoo in the world that has been able
to breed penguins in a zoo environment.
Although it’s not as popular as the two other
Zoo’s I have documented, its app is leaps
ahead of the other two.

is the goal and it is quite achievable.

Aims

A fully interactive map that will have
categorisation for things like toilets, cafes and
baby changing areas. The user will have option
to select one of these categories, with all the
locations highlighted on the map including
route info and distance from the user.

Another feature to this interactive map will be
a dedicated animal section which will feature
animals grouping (mammals, birds, etc.) based
on colour coding. The user can learn even more
about these animals through an information
screen which will give key infomation and some
visuals about the animal in question.

The app will become a visitors informedWW
