CAVITE MUTINY

The article for critique entitled “The Two Faces of the 1872” by Chis Antonette Piedad - Pugay,
published by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, gives an in depth discussion of the
perspective of the both parties involve in the said Munity, which are the Filipinos and the Spaniards. These
includes the uprising of the Filipino Military of Fort San Felipe, the Spanish arsenal in Cavite which led to
the Philippine Revolution of 1986, specially the execution of the three martyr priests named Fathers
Mariano Gomes, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora (GOMBURZA).

The article presented two perspectives, which is the Filipino and the Spaniards version of the Cavite
Munity. Primarily this paper, is all about the Filipino version of the said revolution, discussing the facts
and emphasizing our independence in the hands of the Spaniards.

The Cavite Mutiny 1872, led by Sarmento La Madrid, was the uprising of the Filipino military of
Fort San Felipe, the Spanish arsenal in Cavite. The munity was cause by removal of the personal benefits
of the workers and forced labor exemption on order from the Governor General Rafael de Izquierdo. Around
200 laborers participated to fight for their human rights, belief and stand for the country, Philippines. During
that time The Spanish Government intended to establish educational institution in the country who will be
run by the friars, it is to improve the standard of education in the Philippines. The friars, feared that Filipino
may overpower them, they used the incident and presented it in the Spanish government. They Spanish
government came to believe that it is an attempt of revolution of the Filipinos, reported by Izquierdo and
the friars. They used the munity to execute the educated men as well as the three martyr priests. Sadly, this
mutiny end up unsuccessful, many participant were been killed including the three martyr priests.

The author presented the holistic perspective about the Cavite Munity of 1872, it is given that which
side is more biased in what really happened in Cavite Mutiny. For me, the fact that the GOMBURZA were
executed, they died with a purpose, what happened to these three martyr priest move the heart of the
Filipinos to move forward to aim our freedom. And the blame should not only to the friars but also to the
Central government for not investigating the real situation happened, they became more biased in terms of
trusting more what the friars and Izquierdo reported to them, they have all the power but still didn’t do
anything. Moreover, the mutiny happened because of the dissatisfied benefits that the laborers experienced,
not just because the Filipino want reform or changes. If they do their part as a leader by giving benefits to
all of the workers then Filipinos will not think to make a revolution. The problem is the friars want the
power they have so much, they are the superior of this country during that time, and being a superior’s
means doing everything they want even if they crashed someone’s dignity and that’s the main point. Due
to the unequal treatment of the Spaniards toward the Filipinos, the revolution started called the Cavite
Munity of 1872 which led to to the Philippine Revolution of 1986.

Overall, this event made a big impact to the history of the Philippines, it boost up the confidence
of the Filipinos to fight for their country, especially in their beliefs. However this Munity end up
unsuccessful, it serve as an eye opener in each and every one and it was the start of the Filipino Nationalism.
Indeed, the journey for us to acquire our freedom from the Spaniards is not easy, it was rough and bloody.
Our forefathers sped their bloods just to obtain the independence of our country. So, we should appreciate
and do not forget the history of ours. We earn victory and experience freedom because of them.
