Problem No.

The residential area of a city has a population density of 15000 per km2 and an area of 120000 m2. If the
average water consumption in 400 lpcd find the average sewage flow and the max sewage flow that can
be expected in m3/day.

Solution:

Total population = 15000 x 120.000/(1000x1000) = 1800 persons.

Per capita sewage flow =0.8x 400 = 320 lpcd

Avg Sewage flow = 1800x 320 =578 m3/d.

M = 1 + 14/4+ √p

= 1+ 14 + 14/4+√1.8 = 3.6

Max peak sewage Flow =578x 3.6 = 2085 m3/d.

Problem No.4
A 915 m circular combined sewer is laid on a slope of 0.003 and it is flow full with n=0.013. What will be
the velocity and depth of flow when the sewer is carrying 8.5 m3/min discharge (0.1416 m3/sec).

Solution:

Q when flowing full = V=(1/n) R 2/3 S ½

= 1/0.013x(D/4)2/3(0.003)1/2

= 1.57 m/sec

Q= A x V = 3.14 x (0.915)2/4 x (1.57)

= 1.036 m3/sec

Q a/Q f = 0.1416/1.036=0.14

d/D = 0.3 (from discharge line)

d = 0.3x 0.915=0.275

=275mm

At 0.1416 m3/sec Find velocity At actual depth of flow:

V a/V f = 0.6 (from graph against 0.3)

V a= 0.6x1.57
=0.94 m/sec
