We are pleased to present today the fourth issue of 452ºF Journal of Literary Theory and Comparative
Literature, and it is with double joy that we do. On the one hand, we are fully satisfied with the completion
of the issue and the addition of new voices to the project, within the Editorial and the Advisory boards, as
well as in the illustration, translation, proofreading and layout teams. On the other hand, because this issue
is in many ways the confirmation and consolidation of the project we started more than two years ago,
as shown by the inclusion of the Journal in numerous scientific databases such as DOAJ, CSIC, LATINDEX,
CCUC, RACO and ISOC.
This new issue is composed of eight articles; five correspond to the monographic section and three to
the miscellaneous one. Our call for papers had the aim of exploring the cultural production regarding
memory and its relation to the construction of individual and collective identities. On the one hand, while
we recognised the importance of incorporating new historiographical discourses to the elaboration of a
polyphonic statement, the current political realities drew our attention to the need of keeping a critical
perspective that would allow us to fight against the abuses of memory and to identify the active political
value of each specific discourse, despite their transnational nature. Therefore, this issue is committed to
the creation of a space from which we can, on the one side, analyze the different strategies of discourse
elaboration through narration and, on the other side, elaborate a critical reading of the so-called “memory
industry”. We are particularly interested on the link between these products and their socio-historical
context.
We are especially glad to have the collaboration of two experts in the subject, such as Jaume Peris and José
Colmeiro, both of them members of the Advisory board, and we thank their priceless contribution. Peris’
article is a brilliant and comprehensive analysis of the last decade of Spanish cultural production regarding
the Civil War. He analyzes the creation of a narrative construction of the emotive through an abusive use
of testimony and a homogeneous aesthetics that favoured what Peris and Eugenia Monroy have defined
as the memory effect.
de la reconciliación en España” discusses the consequences that this production, immersed in the market
system, had in the construction and elaboration of a depoliticized discourse, that lost its meaning and
historic-political claims. José Colmeiro’s article, “Nation of Ghosts”, also analyzes the discourses regarding
the memory of the Spanish Civil War and its transformation in relation to the changes on the political and
market system in the different socio-political periods of Spanish contemporary history. At the same time,
it involves a critical vision of these same historical moments and of oblivion policies that were usually in
conflict with the personal and collective need of telling and remembering.
This strain between memory and oblivion is the core subject of Jorge Fernández Castro’s article. There,
he explores the relation between the official memory policies during Franco’s era, which created a
mythological history of the Civil War and the dictatorship, and the use of oblivion as a way of resistance in
Antonio Gamoneda’s work.
In the article “‘I shall Intervene, With Nomad Memory and Intermittent Voice’: Resurrecting Collective
Memory in Assia Djebar’s Fantasia, an Algerian Cavalcade”, Lobna Ben Salem focuses on gender to analyze
the memory of Assia Djebar, who claims for female voices, breaking the monotonous historiography of the
War of Independence in Argel and favouring the construction of a collective identity.
In “The Space of Remembering: Collective Memory and the Reconfiguration of Contested Space in
Argentina’s ESMA”, Emily Parsons explores the physical and symbolic transformation of an urban space.
The project of turning the Argentinean detention centre ESMA into a museum resulted in a crossroads
where different political views on the Argentinean dictatorship are confronted. At the same time, it allows
the author to analyze museumification as a general dynamics present in memory-building processes that,
sometimes, shows the aim of turning into history a conflict that is still present, as reflected by Mercedes
Moroño’s testimony, recovered by Parsons: «We don’t want a museum because we haven’t buried our
children. Until they tell us where they are, as far as we’re concerned, our children are still alive» {International
Justice Tribune, 2008: 2}.
The miscellaneous section is composed of three articles. In the first of them, Adriana Bocchino suggests the
hypothesis of the existence of a homeland built through the writings of internal and external exiles, namely
women, focusing on the analysis of Tununa Mercado and María Negroni’s work to support this idea. In the
second one, Mary Ryan studies Mary Keyes’ work and the representation of women in Ireland, establishing
a connection between the construction of traditional women models in traditional Catholic Ireland and the
current problems of women in contemporary Ireland. Finally, Santiago Venturini explores the possibilities
provided by the link between comparative literature and translation through the comparative reading of
two Argentinean translations of Les fleurs du mal by Charles Baudelaire.
We would like to conclude by thanking the collaboration of all authors, as well as the effort and commitment
of all those who work for all the issues of 452ºF, from the members of the Advisory board, the members of
the Editorial board and of the different teams that articulate the journal, whose priceless work has made
this fourth issue possible.
We hope to have contributed to the creation of a critical space from which to claim for comparative literature
as a tool for analysis and resistance, able to regain the discourses of memory from the consciousness of
their political power, without getting caught up in ideological emptiness. If looking back to the past helps
to understand the present, our aim was to stimulate a reflection on those gazes back.

En el artículo «“I shall Intervene, With Nomad Memory and Intermittent Voice”: Resurrecting Collective
colectiva.
En «The Space of Remembering: Collective Memory and the Reconfiguration of Contested Space in
Moroño recuperado por Parsons: «We don’t want a museum because we haven’t buried our children. Until
they tell us where they are, as far as we’re concerned, our children are still alive» {International Justice
Tribune, 2008: 2}.

CCUC, RACO i ISOC.
A l’article «“I shall Intervene, With Nomad Memory and Intermittent Voice”: Resurrecting Collective Memory
A «The Space of Remembering: Collective Memory and the Reconfiguration of Contested Space in
because we haven’t buried our children. Until they tell us where they are, as far as we’re concerned, our
children are still alive» {International Justice Tribune, 2008: 2}.
i María Negroni.

Atsegin handiz aurkezten dugu 452ºF Literaturaren Teoria eta Literatura Konparatua aldizkariaren
laugarren alea. Poz handia ematen digu, alde batetik, zenbaki berria argitaratzeak berak eta taldea handitzen
ari dela ikusteak, gero eta lankide gehiago baikara Erredakzio Kontseiluan, Batzorde Zientifikoan eta
ilustratzaile, itzultzaile, zuzentzaile nahiz maketatzaileen taldeetan. Bestetik, duela bi urte baino gehiago
abiarazitako proiektua sendotzen ari dela esan dezakegu, besteak beste, hainbat datu-base zientifikotan
sartu gaituztelako; hala nola, DOAJ, CSIS, LATINDEX, CCUC, RACO eta ISOC.
Zortzi artikulu ditu ale honek. Bost artikuluk monografikoa osatzen dute, eta beste hirurek miszelanea. Gure
deialdiaren helburua zen memoriari lotutako kultura ekoizpenak aztertzea, eta bereziki, ekoizpen horien
harremana banako identitateen eta identitate kolektiboen sorkuntzarekin. Garrantzia ematen genion
ahots ezberdinak, diskurtso historiografiko berriak azaleratzeari; baina egungo egoera politikoen aurrean,
beharrezkoa iruditzen zitzaigun ikuspuntu kritiko bati eustea ere, memoria gehiegikeriei aurre egiteko eta
diskurtso bakoitzaren balio aktibo-politikoa identifikatzeko, diskurtso transnazionalak izan arren. Beraz,
espazio kritiko bat sortzen ahalegindu gara, alde batetik, estrategia diskurtsibo ezberdinak aztertzeko eta,
bestetik, «memoriaren industriari» buruzko hausnarketa egiteko. Bereziki interesatzen zitzaigun produktu
horien eta bere testuinguru sozio-historikoaren arteko lotura ere.
Monografikoko bost artikuluek errepresentazio moduaren eta diskurtsoaren arteko harremanaz dihardute
hain zuzen ere, eta testuinguru historiko eta politikoan kokatzen dute diskurtso bakoitza. Beraz, artikulu
guztietan memoria prozesu guztiek komunean dituzten ezaugarriak aztertzen diren arren (fenomeno
globala eta transnazionala dela erakutsiaz), diskurtso bakoitza bere testuinguru historiko, sozial eta
politikoan agertzen zaigu, iraganari buruzko irakurketak eskainiaz, orain alditik eta orain aldira.
Bereziki pozten gaitu Jaume Peris eta José Colmeiro doktoreen kolaborazioak eta zinez eskertzen diegu
egindako ekarpena. Memoriaren gaian adituak dira biak, eta Batzorde Zientifikoko kideak. Perisek azterketa
bikaina egin du azken hamarkadan Espainian Gerra Zibilaz kaleratu den kultura ekoizpenaren inguruan.
Narrazio hunkigarrien eraikuntza ikertzen du: lekukotasunen gehiegizko erabilera eta estetika homogeneo
bat, Perisek berak eta Eugenia Monroyk aipatzen duten memoria efektua sortzen duena. Funtsean, «Hubo
artikuluak aztertzen du zer nolako eragina izan duen merkatu sistemaren araberako ekoizpen honek
despolitizatutako, esanahirik eta aldarrikapen historiko politikorik gabeko diskurtso bat sortzen.
José Colmeiroren «Nation of Ghosts» artikuluak ere Espainiako Gerra Zibilaren memoriaren inguruko
diskurtsoak aztertzen ditu, eta horien eraldatzeak, merkatuak eta sistema politikoak Espainiako historia
garaikidean izan dituzten aldaketei lotuta. Ikuspegi kritikoa hartzen du Colmeirok momentu historiko
horien inguruan eta kontatzeko eta oroitzeko behar indibidual nahiz kolektiboaren aurkako ahanztura
politiken inguruan.
Hain zuzen ere, memoriaren eta ahanzturaren arteko tentsio hori da Jorge Fernández Gonzalok
landutako gai nagusia. Ahanzturaren erabilera (erresistentzia gisa) aztertzen du Antonio Gamonedaren
obra poetikoan, eta erabilera horren lotura frankisten memoria politika ofizialekin, Gerra Zibilaren eta
Frankismoaren historia mitologikoa idatzi zuten politikekin.
«“I shall Intervene, With Nomad Memory and Intermittent Voice”: Resurrecting Collective Memory in
Assia Djebar’s Fantasia, an Algerian Cavalcade» artikuluan, Lobna Ben Salem-ek generoan jartzen du
arreta, Assia Djebar-en narratiba aztertzeko. Emakumeen ahotsak aldarrikatzen ditu Djebar-ek, Algeriako
Independentzia Gerrari buruzko historiografia monokordea apurtuaz eta identitate kolektiboaren
eraikuntzan lagunduaz.
«The Space of Remembering: Collective Memory and the Reconfiguration of Contested Space in Argentina’s
ESMA» artikuluan, Emily Parsons-ek hiriko espazio baten eraldaketa fisiko eta sinbolikoa ikertzen du.
Argentinako ESMA atxiloketa zentroa museo bihurtzeko proiektuaren inguruan, diktadurari buruzko
ikuspegi politiko ezberdinak daude aurrez aurre. Eta honi lotuta, musealizazioa aztertzen du egileak,
memoria eraikitzeko prozesuen dinamika gisa. Batzuetan, oraindik bizirik dagoen gatazka bat historiko
egiteko borondatea adierazten du musealizazioak, Parsons-ek jasotako lekukotasun batek, Mercedes
Moroñorenak, adierazten duen bezala: «We don’t want a museum because we haven’t buried our children.
Until they tell us where they are, as far as we’re concerned, our children are still alive» {International Justice
Tribune, 2008: 2}.
Miszelanea atala hiru artikuluk osatzen dute. Lehenengoan, Adriana Bocchinok proposatzen du barneko
eta kanpoko erbestea bizi dutenek, bereziki emakumeek, idazketaren bidez eraikitzen dutela aberria. Eta
hipotesi hori frogatzeko, Tutuna Mercado-ren eta María Negroni-ren lana aztertzen du.
Bigarrenean, Mary Ryan-ek Marian Keyes-en lana eta Irlandako emakumeen errepresentazioa ikertzen ditu.
Horretarako, lotu egiten ditu Irlanda tradizional katolikoko emakume ereduak eta gaur egungo emakume
irlandarren arazoak.
Azkenik, Santiago Venturinik literatura konparatuaren eta itzulpengintzaren arteko loturak eskaintzen
dituen aukerak aztertzen ditu, Charles Baudelaire-ren Les fleurs du mal lanaren bi itzulpen argentinarren
irakurketa konparatua eginaz.
Bukatzeko, artikulugile guztien lankidetza eskertu nahi dugu, eta baita 452ºF aldizkariaren ale ezberdinetan
lan egin dutenen ahalegina eta konpromisoa ere; Batzorde Zientifikoko kideena, Erredakzio Kontseiluko
kideena, eta aldizkaria gauzatzen duten talde ezberdinena. Haien lanari esker argitaratu ahal izan dugu
laugarren ale hau.
Espazio kritiko bat sortzen lagundu izana espero dugu, literatura konparatua analisirako eta erresistentziarako
tresna gisa aldarrikatzeko. Memoriaren diskurtsoak berreskuratzeko balio duen tresna da, baina bere indar
politikoaren jakitun izan behar du, ideologia gabezian erori gabe. Iraganera begiratzeak orainaldia ulertzen
laguntzen badu, gure asmoa begirada horiei buruzko hausnarketa sustatzea izan da.

Abstract || This essay examines some of the critical and theoretical approaches in the area of
historical memory and identity studies that have emerged as a response to the contemporary
cultural challenges that have resulted from the social and political transformations which have
taken place globally in the last decades. The essay narrows its focus to a case study of the role of
historical memory in the formation of collective identities in contemporary Spain, in the aftermath
of the dictatorship and the subsequent political transition. This study explores in particular the
use of the trope of haunting ghosts in contemporary Spanish literature and cinema as symtomatic
form of spectrality of the repressed collective past.

A Nation of Ghosts?: Haunting, Historical Memory and Forgetting in Post-Franco Spain - José Colmeiro
dynamics involved in canon formation, while challenging the
philosophical tenets of Western thought (Derrida). These theories
have also provided the intellectual tools for deconstructing pervasive
dichotomies such as present/past, presence/absence, written/oral,
high/low, History/story that have defined traditional representation.
Challenging those established structures of power, the poststructuralist
critique of academic discourses has refocused the interest towards
alternative configurations on the margins of power and traditionally
marginalized or excluded stories from underrepresented groups, as
well as their neglected memories and collective identities. Similarly,
the recurring postmodern assessment that our contemporary global
culture suffers amnesia, and its accompanying rhetoric of mourning
and obsession with the loss of identity, as seen in the pervasive
signs of fragmentation, dismemberment, simulacra, fissures and the
cultivation of nostalgia, has renovated the interest for the recovery
of memory and cultural identity. In a lament over the disappearance
of traditional forms of memory in modern societies, Pierre Nora has
noted that “we speak so much of memory because there is so little of it
left” (7). Andreas Huyssen has expressed eloquently the paradoxical
dynamics of memory and forgetting: “The spread of amnesia in our
culture is matched by a relentless fascination with memory and the

… that identity depends on memory, whether we mean by that a
core self that remembers its earlier states or, poststructurally, the
narratives that construct (and deconstruct) identities by comparing
‘once upon a time’ and ‘here and now’” (4). Memory stands as the
founding block of collective identity, as Andreas Huyssen as noted:
“Without memory, without reading the traces of the past, there can be
no recognition of difference (…), no tolerance for the rich complexities
and instabilities of personal, cultural, political and national identities”
(252). Memory forms the basis for a sense of cultural collective
identity marked by those contingencies of difference such as class,
gender, language and ethnicity. The construction of national identities
is directly shaped by the recollection of collective memories of a
common past. As such, memory has an important function as a site
of struggle and resistance for oppressed groups (ethnic and linguistic
minorities, political dissidents, women, exiles, migrants, etc.) in their
construction of alternative cultural identities, against official narratives
of the past that has excluded them. These cultural contingencies
can, and often do, cross the geopolitical national boundaries, and
therefore transnational communities are formed. In addition, the new
forces of globalization and the transformation of transnational public
spheres are also influencing the existing channels of remembrance,
and the constitution of collective identities that do not coincide with
the nation-state (Assmann and Conrad).

and recognition of its plurilingual and multicultural reality has become
a particular case study for central questions about the formation of
modern subjectivity and the struggle for cultural self-representation
and self-definition. These changes have not escaped the attention
of other nations and communities struggling to affirm their cultural
identities, particular national minorities without a state, such as the
Scottish, Welsh or Flemish, and others involved in the process of
democratic transformation and modernization, particularly Latin
America and Eastern Europe. It is the case that in our post-national
global setting, communities learn from each other’s pasts beyond the
limits of the nation, which traditionally has been the principal channel
of collective memory.

Ampuero 2008).
In spite of the grand narrative of the Spanish transition as an
overwhelming success story, which in fact has become a foundational
myth of Spanish modernity1, there are some limitations inherent
to the process of Spanish democracy which cultural critics and
historians have noted in hindsight, in particular the way of dealing
with the past, or perhaps, of not dealing with it2. The politics of
memory of the transition has been repeatedly described as the
erasure and eradication of historical memory, and the forgetting
and silencing of the past (Morán 1991, Medina 2001, Colmeiro
2005, Labanyi 2007). While that perception is based on the official
“pact of forgetting” brokered by the political elites and is in general
terms accurate, I would like to raise a few points for consideration
of the role of memory during the Transition. One is that we should
take into account the asymmetry of memories across the national
geography. The atrophy of memory in the national political discourse
was parallel to the recovery of historical memory in the peripheries
of the nation-estate, where local forms of sub-state nationalism
relied heavily on a different collective memory. A major component
of the recognition of cultural and ethnical difference of the so called
“historical nationalities” and their demands for political rights was
historical memory. The emphasis however was not in reparations or
backward-looking justice, but in the restoration of pre- civil war local
institutions of government, and Statues of Autonomy for Catalonia,
Basque Country and Galicia, which had been cut short by Franco’s
uprising against the Republic.
The second point is that memory and forgetting are not a simple
either-or phenomenon, since memory always necessarily involves
forgetting, and “forgetting is full of memory”, as the Uruguayan poet
Mario Benedetti has expressively stated (El olvido está lleno de

against the absolutist nationalism imposed by Franco) and in
opposition to a diluted unified national memory; the emergence of
new forms of institutional memorialization filling the void, through the

proliferation of institutional and commercialized memory is in fact
the other side of cultural amnesia. As Huyssen as noted, “Amnesia

“collective amnesia”. This reawakening has been a result of social,
judicial, and political movements reclaiming the unearthing, literarily
and symbolically, of the past (the atrocities and human right violations
committed during the Civil War and its aftermath). The recent polemic
surrounding the excavation of mass graves of the Spanish civil war
and the dictatorship, and the creation of a myriad of grassroots
organizations such as the Asociación para la Recuperación de la
Memoria Histórica speaks forcefully about the spectral nature of
Spanish history. Thousands of unmarked burial sites in ditches along
the roads still remain in the Spanish landscape, invisible but ever
present, just like ghosts still awaiting their day of justice. The liminal
and invisible position is an adequate metaphor of their non-existing
status in the margins of the official history. Thanks to the work of
grassroots movements, human right organizations and NGOs, they
have become collective lieux de mémoire, highly symbolic sites of
memory. Quite unexpectedly, memory has now come back to the
center stage in discussions about what to do collectively with that
past, with crucial political, legal and ethical repercussions. There are
also important international issues at stake, with worldwide debates
about the process of dealing with the traumatic memories of the past,
and the extent that amnesty laws can be upheld for crimes against
humanity under the principles of universal jurisdiction.

dealing with this topic such as Los girasoles ciegos, Las trece rosas,
Silencio roto, Libertarias, or El viaje de Carol, all have the same look
and feel of conventional heritage drama productions. Some critics
have pointed out that these works, in spite of their noble goals of
making the traumatic past of repression and resistance accessible
and understandable to contemporary Spanish audiences, mostly
without direct access or personal recollection of those events,
they have made it perhaps too palatable and too comfortable, thus
neutralizing their potential as instruments for social intervention.
These film and TV series, dressed in the polished style of costume
dramas, can appear to reinforce the idea of the pastness of the
past, easily accessible but just as easily disconnected from present
day historical realities and social and political concerns6. This trend
may suggest a certain aesthetic commoditization of the horrors of
the past, somewhat domesticated for contemporary consumption,
when not a nostalgic reinterpretation of the past, such as Fernando
Trueba’s Academy-winner Belle Epoque. In some extreme cases,
these representations are literally costume melodramas featuring
glamorous TV actors and actresses, appealing to a retro aesthetic,
with fancy period dresses and décor, as in the popular Spanish
television soap opera Amar en tiempos revueltos, which has been a
leader in television audience rankings in Spain for several seasons.
As the title of the series already suggests, the postwar dictatorship
is just a mere melodramatic backdrop for the conventional love
intrigues and disputes characteristic of the telenovela genre.
On the other hand, some writers and directors dealing with the
subject of the Spanish civil war and the dictatorship have recurred to
other non-realistic modes, in an effort to better capture the work of
memory, the experiences of trauma, the silences and the voids of the

past, the historical discontinuities, and the elusive nature of historical
narrativization. One recurring element used in these works has
been the trope of haunting, which underlies the ghostly nature of the
past in its ever-returning nature, projecting its shadow towards the
present and the future. These haunting narratives thus make visible
the disappearances and absences silenced in normative historical
accounts, and replicate the process of confronting a difficult past that
still needs to be dealt with in the present.

past, full of voids, omissions, and disappearances, cannot form a
continuous narrative without distortion. Below the smooth surface of
official accounts of history, lie those stories that have been silenced
and erased, leaving only their ghostly traces, and therefore bound to
return and haunt the present. Ghost stories construct a representation
of the past “as a haunting, rather than a reality immediately accessible
to us” (Labanyi 2007, 112). Ghosts, as embodiment of the past in the
present, destabilize the accepted notions of history, reality, and self,
and the clear demarcations that define them. Their here-but-not-
here borderline existence, between the dead and the living, blurs the
binary divide that constructs our perception of reality. Ghosts remind
us that we need to confront our past if we want to move ahead and
construct a better future.

national martyr of the Spanish fascist uprising, assassinated in the
first weeks of the civil war for his political and sexual orientation, and
still unaccounted for, is profoundly symbolic. Like a ghost, Lorca’s

past, still haunting the present. In the same manner as the spectral
representations of the past in the literary and cinematic works seen
before, this shadow projects the image of a nation full of ghosts, still
waiting recovery, resolution, and reparation.

Abstract || In the last decade new cultural styles have taken hold in Spain with which to represent
the recent past, closely related to the emergence of the debates on the so-called historical
memory and to the contemporary development of the cultural industries. Those styles have
caused a series of composition procedures and textual effects to become standardized and
allow for the public to identify them with the aesthetics of memory. Testimony, as a paraliterary
form and civic discourse, has reached an exceptional place in that standardization process of
the aesthetics of memory, but its mechanical use has privileged its dramatic profitability over its
potential for criticism.

Abstract || In Assia Djebar’s war narratives, it is women’s voices and experiences that are at the
centre of narration, in contrast to traditional male-centred narratives of war and conflict. In Fantasia,
an Algerian Cavalcade, there are multiple female protagonists, survivors of independence war,
who, through storytelling, present shifting perspectives and a multiplicity of voices that contest
monological historical versions. By reassembling the fragments of individual identities, lost and
forgotten by history, the writer forges collective identity, focussing on the communal rather than
private aspect of memory.
The paper highlights the gender-specific nature of war memories; it examines the role of the
narrative as a means of countering deficiencies of memory and combating historic amnesia.
Centred on the idea that memory constructs identity, the paper investigates the extent to which
a gendered memory of war can contribute in shaping collective identity, bearing in mind the
interdependence but also the dissonance of orality and texting.

«I imagine you, the unknown woman, whose tale has been handed
down by story-tellers... For now I too take my place in the fixed circle of
listeners […] I recreate you, the invisible woman […] I resurrect you […]
that no letter from any French soldier was to describe»
(Djebar, 1985: 189).
0. Introduction
Women who choose to write about wars they have lived are defying an
age old silencing code. Their speaking about now and in knowledge of
their transgressions allows us to read back into the gaps and silences of
the War Story. Their stories threaten the privilege assumed proper to the
right to tell the War Story. As the right to tell diffuses among all who may
claim to have had a war experience, however unrecognizable as such
by the standard conventions, the masculine contract between violence,
sexuality, and glory comes undone (Cooke, 1997: 293).
In light of this, I argue that reconciling the female self with history,
whether for the author herself or for the fragmented voices of the
diverse narrators, is essential for their identity formation and should
inevitably include a gendered performativity of memory. So the first
part of the article traces aspects of gendered remembrance and
forgetfulness; the second part delineates the effects —both positive
and negative— of remembering the body or through the body on
female identity, while the last part muses over whether collective
memory could survive in a foreign tongue, in other words the place
of orality in her literary text.

The urgent need to rewrite history through fiction is voiced out by
one female narrator: «Alas! We can’t read or write. We don’t leave
any accounts of what we lived through and all we suffered!» (Djebar,
1985: 184) Put more theoretically:

is no single War Story; the standard narrative —and with it the way
we think about and conduct war— are dialogic rather than monologic
(Bakhtin, 1981: 276).
Strange little sister, whom henceforth I leave veiled or whose story I now
transcribe in a foreign tongue. Her body and her face are once more
engulfed in shadow as she whispers her story – a butterfly displayed on a
pin with the dust from its crushed wing staining one’s finger (1985: 141) .

thirteen-year-old shepherd-girl might have said» (1985: 202). Almost
all testimonies avoided relating sexual violence and embraced a
code of silence to save their identities as mothers, sisters and wives:
«As soon as we young women saw the French coming we never
stayed inside. The old women stayed in the houses with the children;
we went to hide in the undergrowth or near the wadi. If the enemy
caught us we never said a word» (1985: 206-207). Memory becomes
a site for struggle, not just of what to remember or forget but also of
what to select and what to ignore, jeopardizing collective memory in
the process. The author, in that case, is confronted with the dilemma
of speaking the unspeakable, the unhearable, the taboo, and is
urgent to allude to this fractured memory:
Once the soldiers were gone, once she has washed, tidied herself up,
plaited her hair and tied the scarlet ribbon, all these actions reflected
in the brackish water of the wadi, the woman, every woman, returns,
one hour or two hours later, advances to face the world to prevent the
chancre being opened in the tribal circle […] rape will not be mentioned,
will be respected. Swallowed. Until the next alarm (1985: 202).
How could a woman speak aloud, even in Arabic, unless on the threshold
of extreme age? How could she say “I”, since that would be to scorn the
blanket-formulae which ensure that each individual journeys through life
is a collective resignation? [...] How can she undertake to analyze her
childhood, even if it turns out different? The difference if not spoken of,
disappears.
[…] My oral tradition has gradually been overlaid and is in danger of
vanishing […] In writing of my childhood memories I am taken back to
those bodies bereft of voices (1985: 156).

protector of male subjectivity. The disembodiment of Woman in the
national narrative and her mythification render it impossible to position
her as an agent of change» (Fayad, 1995: 158), is of little relevance
in Assia Djebar’s accounts of female resistance. The female stories,
then, blend together to shape a women’s collective narrative, forming
an amalgam of voices and experiences. Each individual memory
presents a woman in a state of fulfillment, as aggressive, fearless,
single-minded, actively engaged with resistance; there is for instance
the memory of a thirteen year old shepherd-girl joining her brothers
in the maquis, who had to carry the burden of burial and mourning of
a brother killed in front of her eyes.
[…] that of the mother who bore the soldiers’ tortures with never a
whimper, that of the little cooped-up sisters, too young to understand, but
bearing the message of wild-eyed anguish, the voice of the old women
of the douar who face the horror of the approaching death-knell, open-
mouthed, with palms of fleshless hands turned upwards (1985: 123).
But also of those who gave shelter and food to the mûdjâhidîn,
carried arms up to the rebels in the mountains, joined the struggle,
and were imprisoned, tortured, and murdered, and even those who
sewed uniforms and flags, nursed the wounded, served as reporters,
and even as money collectors.
The fourth language, for all females, young or old, cloistered or half-
emancipated, remains that of the body: the body which […] in trances,
dances or vociferations, in fits of hope or despair, rebels, and unable to
read or write, seeks some unknown shore as destination for its message
of love (1985: 180).
Elia rightly postulates that «the venue left for these women is the
preverbal —physical expression, movements, sounds, trances and
dances— functioning outside the reach of any Symbolic discourse
and which can thereby communicate the inducible» (Elia, 2001: 22).
So, it is all incomprehensible and enigmatic to those representing not
only Patriarchy but also Imperialism. When the war is waged, «the
women’s shrill ululation improvises for the fighting men a threnody of
war in some alien idiom: our chroniclers are haunted by the distant

sound of half-human cries, cacophony of keening, ear-splitting
hieroglyphs of a wild, collective voice» (1985: 56). In this frenzied
hysteria of primeval sounds and movements, the body fulfills itself
and identity is complete. Rhythm and sense displace language and
discourse in a ritual that expels pain and invokes serenity. In the
trance scene, for instance, women, the grandmother as such, fights
lethargy and silence with dances not words:
The matriarch was normally the only one of the women who never
complained; she condescended to mouth the formulas of submission
disdainfully; but this extravagant or derisory ceremonial which she
regularly organized was her own way of protesting… Against whom?
Against the others or against fate? I wondered. But when she danced,
she became indubitably queen of the city. Cocooned in the primitive
music, she drew her daily strength before our very eyes.
The haughty matron’s voice and body gave me a glimpse of the source
of all our sorrows: like half obliterated signs which we spend the rest of
our lives trying to decipher (1985: 145).
My hair caught fire. And the child who was crying with fright, shouted,
‘Mother, the fire’s eating you up! The fire is eating you up!’
That’s how I lost all my hair. I hurled myself into the water. But more
burning embers fell on me […] (1985: 161).

articulation. Through narrating their suffering, subaltern women are
empowered and effectively take control of that pain, wresting power
from their torturer and appropriating it for themselves. In that sense,
rendering personal memory public is liberating.
Bosquet muses over the youth killed defending his sister in the luxurious
tent; he recalls the anonymous woman whose foot had been hacked
off, ‘cut off for the sake of the khalkhal…’ Suddenly as he inserts these
words, they prevent the ink of the whole letter from drying: because of the
obscenity of the torn flesh that he could not suppress in his description
(1985: 56).
To read this writing, I must lean over backwards, plunge my face into
the shadows, closely examine the vaulted roof of rock or chalk, lend an
ear to the whispers that rise up from time out of mind, study this geology
stained red with blood. What magma of sounds lies rotting there? What
stench of petrifaction seeps out? I grope about, my sense of smell
aroused, my ears alert, in this rising tide of ancient pain. Alone, stripped
bare, unveiled, I face these images of darkness…
How are the sounds of the past to be met as they emerge from the well
of bygone centuries?... What love must still be sought, what future be
planned, despite the call of the dead? And my body reverberates with
sounds from the endless landslide of generations of my lineage (1985:
64).
The transactions between language and body that could help identity
formation —both for the writer and her foremothers— dissolve, for
«the language of pain», as posited, «could only be a kind of hysteria
—the surface of the body becomes a carnival of images and the depth
becomes a site for hysterical pregnancies— the language having
all the phonetic excess of hysteria that destroys apparent meaning»

(Das, 2004: 331). The writer’s fractured relation to language,
evidenced in her failure to articulate her compatriots’ memory of pain
is a testimony that colonial subjugation did not affect female social
identity but also the artistic one; for «denial of the other’s pain is not
about the failing of the intellect but the failings of the spirit. In the
register of the imaginary, the pain of the other not only asks for a
home in language, but also seeks a home in the body» (Das, 2004:
332).
To the little girl I’d adopted; I kept on saying, ‘if they question you, begin
to cry! If they ask, ‘Who comes to visit your mother? What does she do’
you must begin to cry immediately… if you say a word, they will ask more
questions! Just cry! That’s all you must do!” and that’s what she did. She
burst into tears, she rolled about in the sand, she ran away in a flood of
tears (1985: 160).

The memory of war, though painful, contested historic discourses
that stigmatized women to invisibility and marginality, and attested to
the fact that female identity is volatile and escapes coded definitions.
Her sense of guilt at being alienated from the mother tongue while
acknowledging the artistic potential the language of the conqueror
has allowed destabilizes the writer’s sense of identity: «I know that
every language is a dark depository for piled-up corpses[…] but
faced with the language of the former conqueror, which offers me
its ornaments, its jewels, its flowers, I find they are the flowers of
death —chrysanthemums on tombs» (1985: 181). The writer’s
exclusion and sense of betrayal trigger her desire to reconcile with
her motherland, her identity; so, she records women’s stories and
reproduces them resurrecting their collective identities and hers in
the process. In this context, having shown her ability to speak, the
question of whether the subaltern can read her own war testimonies
is of little importance. If Assia Djebar writes, it is not just for the
sake of these individual forgotten women, but for collective women’s
memory in general, for posterity. If these stories of resistance are
not recorded, the risk of their erasure from historical memory is
imminent. Testimonial narratives, once delivered, are stripped from
their privacy and become public properties, acquiring a polymorphic,
multi-bodied voice. The voice of these women will keep resonating
through the blending of Berberic and Arabic accents and intonations
into the French text. This linguistic hybridity allows the creation of
a “third space”, neither Arabic nor French, where the writer could
reconcile with her exilic self and her dispersed origins; a space where

development and argues that the intrinsic and conflictual collective
memory work involved is characterized by competing desires to

physical, visible, and public space of ESMA. ESMA becomes symbolic
of opposing groups longing to impart two competing narratives of the
Dirty War within the nation’s memory.

(Daniels, 2008: 4). Both groups are negotiating remembrances of
the past while calling attention to the notion that there is no such
thing as objective and unadulterated history. Maurice Halbwachs,
the French sociologist credited with coining the term «collective
memory», emphasizes the notion that a nation’s memory of the past
is constructed with the needs of the present in mind (McCormack,
2007: 4). The military desires to avoid further scrutiny from the public,
while human rights groups, many members of which are survivors
and family members of the Disappeared, want a public museum
space that advances knowledge of the crimes committed during
the state-run terror of the Dirty War and establishes a permanent
remembrance of them. In this sense, the physical possession of
ESMA is also endowed with the symbolic custody of memory space
within the nation’s consciousness. Those opposing the formation
of the museum assert that they want to «move forward» into the
future with the unspoken knowledge that transforming ESMA into a
site of memory would only encourage the populace to scrutinize the
military’s crimes further. By physically displacing the military from
ESMA, the «fiction of power» that made their crimes possible in the
first place and that supports and reinforces the concept that human
rights violations were necessary for the future of Argentina, was also
being dismantled in the process (Scarry, 1985: 18).

How do you tell the stories of individuals who have disappeared? 9 | «Espacio para la Memoria
Should the space be dedicated solely to memory or should it also y para la Promoción y Defensa
be dedicated to human rights? How do you remain hopeful for de los Derechos Humanos»
Many human rights groups wish to see at least part of the space
dedicated to the promotion of human rights. This indicates that much
of this «collaboration of the community in acts of remembrance»
binds memory with justice (Young, 1988: 189). The name of the
museum actually reads, «The Space for Memory and the Promotion
and Defense of Human Rights»9. Miriam Lewis, one of only 150
ESMA survivors, is a proponent of a «living museum so that future
generations don’t commit the same mistakes» (Daniels, 2008: 2).
By linking justice with memory, the Museum of Memory creates a
temporal relationship between past, present and future that keeps
alive the memory of the past in the present and, in turn, discourages
future «mistakes». This concept of memory as dynamic stands in
opposition to that of memory as static, unchanging, and fixed in
time «that allows our icons of remembrance to harden into idols of
remembrance» of more traditional museum spaces (Young, 1988:
189).

Summary || This article postulates the possibility of determining a place of belonging for those
women writing from the condition of exile, in the writings formulation. The condition of exile
(interior or exterior), suffered for political reasons by Argentineans intellectuals throughout the
last half of the twentieth century, become stronger in the case of those women who write. This
status of exile is formally traceable through the his writings, women observed in this approach,
Tununa Mercado and María Negroni, who achieve in finding a place and making it their own
place and thus contribute toa different way of making literature. That place will be analyzed
through two of their novels: Yo nunca te prometí la eternidad (2005) and La Anunciación (2007)

Abstract || This paper will observe how the work of Irish author Marian Keyes is influenced by,
and representative of, the place of women in Ireland in terms of historical issues, social values,
and legal issues. It will discuss two primary areas that have affected women in Irish society: the
family and the female body. In addressing how such issues were traditionally viewed in Irish
society, this paper will demonstrate how Keyes’ novels present an awareness –a memory– of
how Irish women’s lives were once repressed by patriarchal values, and how contemporary
women still, to some extent, feel the effects –the restraints– of such attitudes.

0. Introduction
This paper will observe how Keyes’ work is influenced by, and
representative of, the place of women in Ireland in terms of historical
issues, social values, and legal issues. In doing so, it will discuss
two areas that have affected women in Irish society: marriage,
motherhood and the family, and the female body. In addressing how
such issues were traditionally viewed in Irish society, this paper will
demonstrate how Keyes’ novels present an awareness –a memory–
of how Irish women’s lives were once repressed by patriarchal
values, and how contemporary women still, to some extent, feel the
effects –the restraints– of such attitudes.

and motherhood» (Hill, 2003: 143). Irish women thus felt enormous
pressure from a wide variety of outside influences –Church, society,
family, even television– as to the path their life should take and, as a
result, marriage and motherhood became the ultimate goal of most
young women in Ireland.
Hard to believe that Mam had once had a job – she’d worked in a typing pool,
which is where she’d met Dad. But she gave up work when she got pregnant
with me; after the previous miscarriage she wasn’t taking any chances.
Maybe she would have given up her job anyway, after I’d been born,
because that was what Irish women did in those days. (Keyes, 2004: 61)

realistic accounts of domestic violence and abuse, and are also
useful in outlining the extent to which domestic violence and rape
have been unreported and, perhaps worse, ignored when they have
been reported. In the Republic of Ireland alone, it has been estimated
that a staggering one-fifth to one-third of all women have, at some
time, experienced violence within a relationship, figures which are
reiterated in This Charming Man, though it is thought that these
figures may not cover the full extent of violence, due to so many
cases remaining unreported:
‘It’s your word against his. Look,’ Vincent leaned closer to her. ‘Are you
sure you didn’t just, you know, get a bout of the guilts? One last go, for
old times’ sake, then got afraid that hubby there might get wind.’
‘I’m sure.’
‘Are you sure you want to go ahead with this? Taking it further?’
‘I’m sure.’
‘Because it’ll ruin his life, you know. Just so as you know.’ (Keyes, 2009:
336)
Maeve is later informed that it has been decided that there is not
enough evidence to result in a conviction and so the police are not
proceeding with the prosecution:

work in the same place as him. You’re saying he’ll just carry on with his
job and everything like nothing happened?’
‘In the eyes of the law he’s done nothing wrong.’ The guard heaved
himself up to leave. ‘Why should the man lose his job?’ (Keyes, 2009:
537)
Such were the choices many women had: suffer in silence, or speak
up and risk being ignored. In Maeve’s case, her feelings of isolation
and helplessness resulted in both her and her husband becoming
severely depressed and suicidal. Maeve’s husband, Matt, reflected
on the injustice that arises out of many rape allegations, which allows
Keyes to report on the shockingly low conviction rates for rape in
Ireland:
Matt had discovered things he’d never before thought about: that only
one in ten reported rapes make it to court; that out of them, only six
in a hundred result in a conviction. And what about all the rapes that
are never reported, because the girl is too scared. Of her rapist? Of the
police? All those rapes unacknowledged, unavenged. It was enough to
drive him mad. How was the world as normal as it was? How was all that
rage and injustice and grief and fear contained? (Keyes, 2009: 541-542)

‘I made the mistake of going to the police. He was so angry I thought he
was going to kill me.’
She went to the police?
‘And was he, like, charged?’ How had he kept that out of the
press?
‘Not at all.’ She rolled her eyes. ‘These two fat eejits showed up
in their yellow jackets and as soon as they’d established it was “only” a
domestic, they told us to kiss and make up, then were off down the road
to buy chips and batterburgers. All I could do was apply for a barring
order – which would take twelve weeks.’ (Keyes, 2008: 591)
When we consider that Zara was informed that her only option was
to apply for a barring order, which would leave her vulnerable to even
more violence during the months that it would take to organise, it
again highlights that the Irish law is not yet seeing the full extent of
the seriousness and the danger that some women experience in the
home; as journalist Grace Gildee dejectedly realises in the same
novel, «no one cares about domestic violence» (Keyes, 2008: 179).
Irish feminists eventually realised that the Irish family was, for many
women, a far from perfect place; that women were afforded few
rights and were often trapped in damaging and unhappy situations,
from which they could see little escape. It was noted how «the
depiction of male violence, rape, sexual harassment, child sexual
abuse, marital violence or pornography as “not that serious” erodes
women’s sense of their own bodily integrity and ultimately their sense
of their own value» (O’Connor, 1998: 14). With the help of feminist
activism in Ireland, which worked relentlessly to protect women in
family life, eventually women’s situations were brought to public
attention and laws began to reflect this new knowledge. Theorist
Clodagh Corcoran stressed that if society is to combat issues such
as rape and domestic violence, along with other forms of oppression,
then such issues must be treated «as a civil rights issue for women,
demanding appropriate legislation» (Corcoran, 1989: 20). Following
this hope, The Brightest Star in the Sky ends on an optimistic note
which reflects the aim to bring such issues to public attention: one of
the final chapters is a flash-forward to the future in which most of the
main characters are attending a public rally on the streets of Dublin
to «protest against the low conviction rate for Irish rapists» (Keyes,
2009: 594), depicting a utopian vision for the future in which rape and
domestic violence are no longer hidden in Irish society, and where
demands for change are voiced publicly.

which posed a threat to Ireland’s strict Catholic morality. Records of
the number of “illegitimate pregnancies” which occurred in Ireland in
the late twentieth century have shown an enormous increase on both
sides of the border, «from 2.6 per cent of all births in the Republic in
1970 to reach 22.5 per cent by 1995, and from 3.6 per cent to 21.8
per cent in the North in the same period» (Hill, 2003: 146).

«children born outside of wedlock were discriminated against in the
law» (Connolly, 2005: 3). However, this situation has changed in
Ireland in the last few years, largely due to the fact that «the number
of unmarried mothers in Irish society continued to increase during
the last two decades of the [twentieth] century» (Hill, 2003: 193),
despite the fact that «everyone over sixteen has had the right to
contraception since the early nineties, and with AIDS making it a
public health issue, condoms could be bought from machines from
1993» (Hill, 2003: 193).
Whatever the reasons for the high birth rates outside of marriage,
it is clear that the consequences of pregnancy outside of marriage
are now considered less catastrophic than in earlier decades. Some
theorists, such as Pat O’Connor, have even depicted lone parenthood
in a positive light, stating how it has the potential to reflect «the ability
of women to survive on their own, and their willingness to redefine the
family, excluding a residential heterosexual tie as the basic element
in that unit» (O’Connor, 1998: 119). This recently-found tolerance of
single motherhood in Ireland is evident in a number of Keyes’ novels,
which portray single mothers. Watermelon (1995), for instance, is
a novel centred on single motherhood, in which protagonist Claire
Walsh’s husband leaves her for another woman on the day she gives
birth to their first child. Claire is portrayed as a strong, independent
woman who admirably copes with her situation with grace, humour,
and maturity, as portrayed in the following extract in which Claire
reflects on her circumstances:
My marriage had broken up, but I had a beautiful child. I had a wonderful
family, very good friends and a job to go back to. Who knew, one day, I
might even meet a nice man who wouldn’t mind taking Kate on as well
as me. Or if I waited long enough maybe Kate would meet a nice man
who wouldn’t mind taking me on as well as her. But in the meantime I
had decided that I was just going to get on with my life and if Mr Perfect
arrived along, I’d manage to make room for him somewhere. (Keyes,
2003b: 565)
‘I know. I’ve been thinking.’ Pause. ‘Being pregnant isn’t the horrible
disaster it would have been five years ago, or even three years. Back
then, I’d no security, I hadn’t a bean and I’d definitely have had a
termination. But now... I have an apartment, I have a well-paid job – it’s
not their fault that I can’t live within my means – and I sort of like the idea
of having a baby around the place.’ (Keyes, 2006: 470-471)
118

In the epilogue to Anybody Out There?, we learn that new-mother
Jacqui is part of the narrator calls a «modern-day family unit» (Keyes,
2006: 587) in which the baby’s parents both enjoy time with their
child but do not feel obliged to become a couple merely for the child’s
sake, as Irish society would have once expected. The novel therefore
demonstrates how the marginal position of the unmarried mother,
once viewed as a threat to the status quo and a cause for unofficial
concern, now provides a «good perspective from which to consider
changing gender roles» (Joannou, 2000: 42); Anybody Out There?
presents a depiction of this “modern” family, where the parents are
happily unmarried, and neither mother nor child are “punished” for
this. By portraying lone parenthood in a positive sense, novels such
as Anybody Out There? are providing an implicit challenge to «the
traditional “unthinkableness” of a family life which is not based on
a residential conjugal unit» (O’Connor, 1998: 122), thus helping to
remove the stigma so commonly associated with unmarried mothers
in Ireland.

2. Sex and the Female Body in Ireland
Gone With the Wind was not screened in the Republic of Ireland when
it was released because the official film censor, James Montgomery,
required so many cuts that the distributor withdrew it. Ironically,
Montgomery vigorously objected to the childbirth scene! Thus, while the
state of maternity was formally recognized with the Irish constitution, the
embodied processes of becoming a mother –sex and childbirth– were
deemed obscene. (Pramaggiore, 2006: 120)
Even the world of sports was, until as late as the 1970s, strictly for
men, as «the conservative, Catholic ethos of the Free State effectively
removed women from competitive athletic sports» (Hill, 2003: 7)
after Pope Pius XI decreed in 1929 that the «violent exertion» and
«notable scantiness in clothing» which was associated with women’s
sports, as well as the fact of women performing in front of crowds of
male spectators, was an unsuitable situation for any woman to be in
and still retain her purity and reserve (Judge: 1995).
Bell tinged. The arrival of Nkechi. Everyone looked. Plenty to look at.
Nigerian, excellent posture, braids hanging all the way down her back,
very long legs, then a really quite large bottom perched on top of them.
120

But Nkechi never tried to hide her bottom. She was proud of it. Fascinating
to me. Irish girls’ lives were a constant quest for bottom-disguising or
bottom-reducing clothing tactics. We can learn much from other cultures.
(Keyes, 2008: 32)
I suspected that if I had big bouncy breasts and long, slender, cellulite-
free golden thighs I could have overlooked my Catholic guilt. I would
probably have been a lot more likely to confidently hop into bed with total
strangers. Maybe sex would have been an activity that I could just enjoy,
instead of it mostly being an exercise in damage limitation, trying to act
like I was enjoying myself while at the same time managing to hide a bum
that was too big, a chest that was too small, thighs that were too... etc.,
etc. (Keyes, 2003a: 239)
This suggests that the restraints many Irish women feel are imposed
on them are still hard to escape. In This Charming Man, we also
witness the measures that many people still take in order to portray
the illusion of leading a “moral” and chaste life, because they believe
this is still expected in contemporary Ireland. One of the characters
is dating a politician and, although she has effectively moved into
her boyfriend’s home, he advises her to keep her own home as well
and to pretend that she is not living with him, in case the voting Irish
public turn against him for “living in sin” with his girlfriend, alluding
to the idea that the traditional sense of Irish morality may still be
prevalent in many people’s minds and therefore still hard to escape:
In actual fact, it had been months since she’d spent a single night in her
own house, but Paddy said they had to pretend. The Irish electorate was
an unpredictable beast, he said: one minute as liberal as you please,
the next breathing ire and indignation about people ‘living in sin’. In fact,
Paddy had tried to insist that they genuinely live in their separate homes
until after the wedding, but this was one issue that Alicia stood her ground
on. She’d waited too long for him, she loved him so much, she couldn’t
not be with him. (Keyes, 2008: 231)

when we consider how:
The dominant Catholic ideology of the newly established Irish Free State
in the 1920s and 1930s in a sense desexualised women to such an
extent that even sex within marriage was considered too risqué for public
and often even for private discussion. One consequence of this taboo
was that little historical attention was directed towards unearthing the
sexual activities of Irish women. (Hayes, 2001: 79)
122
Then and Now: Memories of a Patriarchal Ireland in the Work of Marian Keyes - Mary Ryan
452ºF. #04 (2011) 110-130.
While sexuality came out into the open in other societies, here it remained
in the closet. Irish women (and men) have not involved themselves to
any great extent in the agonising over sexuality which has occurred in
other Western countries. While the feminist literature of other countries
has endless dissertations on sexuality, discussion of the subject among
Irish feminists was never able to surface into the public domain. (Viney,
1989: 64)
Only two respondents were told about them, one by her mother and the
other by a female cousin. The overwhelming memories of the rest of
the women were of being shocked and frightened when their first period
occurred and feeling ashamed by the secrecy of the monthly rituals of
soaking and washing soiled cloths and towels which had to be kept
hidden from male family members. Given this taboo, it is perhaps not
surprising that most women reported that they were ignorant of sexual
matters during their youth. (Lambert, 2000: 183)

of menstruation, but also refers directly to it: «The flash of red caught
me by surprise. Blood. My period.» (Keyes, 2006: 300). Despite
the simplicity of the reference, the very fact of its inclusion is a
positive indicator of how Keyes is helping to provide an outlet for the
discussion of menstruation in Ireland.
As Irish society viewed sex as a sin, women were only allowed sexual
freedom within the confines of marriage, and even then only with a
view to conceiving. Even childbirth, with the perceived “uncleanness”
of birth, was imposed with purification rituals, such as the ceremony
of churching, a type of «blessing after childbirth’ (de Beauvoir, 1997:
178), which supposedly cleansed the woman from the “sin” of having
had the sex which resulted in the baby being conceived. As a result,
this taboo of the pregnant woman became another area which has
traditionally resulted in the repression of the female body. From an
Irish perspective, it is ironic that childbirth was so severely censored,
when we consider the sanctity of motherhood and the family which
was inherent in Irish society. Yet, areas concerning fertility and
childbirth were often thought to be «messy considerations which
women should confine among themselves (except for the lucrative
practice of gynaecologists)» (Viney, 1989: 60). It has been noted how
«accounts of women giving birth are rare until the twentieth century
and are usually depicted from the spectator’s point of view rather than
the mother’s, perhaps from the father’s or someone in attendance»
(Joannou, 2000: 45). Additionally, we can be reminded that not only
were such issues silenced in the private and public realms, but even
depictions of pregnancy and childbirth in the media were censored,
as revealed in the earlier quote regarding how Gone with the Wind
was once banned in Ireland because of a childbirth scene.
In fact, it was only a week since I started wearing normal knickers again.
Let me explain.
Maybe you don’t know it but you don’t return to normal living and,
more importantly, normal clothes the moment you give birth.
No indeed!
It’s a long time before certain bodily processes stop. I don’t want
to sound unnecessarily gory here but can I just say that I could have
given Lady Macbeth a run for her money.
Don’t talk to me about blood being everywhere, Missus! (Keyes,
2003b: 276-277)

as “taboo”. In doing so, Keyes is helping to normalise women’s
bodies and women’s sexualities, a trend which other Irish writers will
hopefully continue.
Abortion.
‘You know that I don’t –at least I didn’t– believe in it.’ Katherine couldn’t
meet Tara’s eye, as she remembered how, at school, she’d always
made mealy-mouthed pronouncements along with the nuns about how
abortion was murder, about how no one had the right to deny life to
the unborn. But all that had been swept away by the terrible terror that
had possessed her. From the moment Lorcan had run out on her she’d
wanted to have an abortion. She could see no other way to avoid her life
falling apart. She’d known she’d burn in Hell, but she didn’t care. She
was in Hell already. (Keyes, 1999: 567-568)
125
Then and Now: Memories of a Patriarchal Ireland in the Work of Marian Keyes - Mary Ryan
452ºF. #04 (2011) 110-130.
Similarly, towards the end of Angels, we learn that protagonist
Maggie became pregnant when she was seventeen years old and
still in school. Unlike Katherine, who miscarried before she aborted
her unborn child, Maggie did travel to England for the termination.
Despite initially feeling ashamed and alone, as if she was the only
person to ever have an abortion, Maggie eventually learns that a
number of her friends go through the same thing, indicating the
frequency that Irish women travel abroad to avail of a legal abortion.
Maggie’s feelings and reflections on the termination display an honest
and objective attitude to the both the decision to have the abortion
and to the feelings they may experience afterwards, asserting that,
despite what women have been brought up to believe, they should
do what is right for them as, like Katherine, she realises that no one
can decide what is right for another person at a particular time in
their lives. The extract also demonstrates that abortions are not only
carried out by teenagers and very young women who fall pregnant
while still in school or out of wedlock and feel they are too young to
cope with a baby, but that such services are availed of by women of
all ages and in a variety of personal situations, helping to lessen the
stigma often attached to abortion:
For a long time, I was the only person I knew who’d had an abortion.
Then, when she was twenty-five, Donna had one and Sinead’s sister had
one when she was thirty-one. Both times I was called on to relate how
it was for me and I told them honestly what I thought; it was their body
and they had the right to choose. They shouldn’t give any credence to
those pro-life bullies. But –at least if they were anything like me– they
shouldn’t expect to emerge unscathed from the experience, but should
brace themselves for fall-out. Every emotion from guilt to curiosity, shock
to regret, self-hatred to wretched relief. (Keyes, 2002: 360)
126

It is no longer the case that all heterosexual acts are categorically viewed
as a potential conception, as the Catholic Church traditionally advocated.
The pursuit of sex and obligatory reproduction can now, in principle, be
treated as two separate matters, both institutionally and intimately, in
contemporary Ireland. (Connolly, 2005: 54)
Much of this change has resulted from the decreasing impact and
influence of the Church in Ireland; by the beginning of the twenty-first
century, «a realignment of the relationship between Church, state
and civil society indicated that the Church’s authority, particularly
on sexual matters, was gradually diminishing, and that a gulf was
beginning to emerge between formal religious practice and the
activities of everyday life» (Hill, 2003: 5). As a result, views regarding
sexual matters in Ireland are increasingly becoming more open-
minded, albeit slowly:
From the days of parish priests beating the hedgerows for courting
couples when sex outside marriage was the paramount sin, and of
women being castigated in confession for refusing intercourse to their
husbands, there is now a somewhat more rational view of this human
condition and its functions. However, with some people, a certain amount
of prurience still attaches to the subject, a hangover from the severe
repression of those bygone days. (Viney, 1989: 48)
We sat quietly and still, Chris’s arm tight around me. I closed my eyes
and, for a few moments, let myself pretend it was a perfect world and he
was my boyfriend.
It reminded me of an earlier, more innocent age, when the most a
boyfriend did was put his arm around you and –if your luck was in– kissed
you. The enforced decorum demanded by the Cloisters was sweet and
romantic. It touched, rather than frustrated me. (Keyes, 1998: 358)

morality, they are also trying to move forward into the more open-

Summary || The link between Comparative Literature and translation challenges the classic
approach of translation, and allows widening the scope of translated text. This paper explore
this relationship through the analyze of two versions of Charles Baudelaire’s Les fleurs du mal
appeared in Argentina during the 20th century, stressing the nature of translation as an act of
rewriting.
