AHBZ - House of Hope

SPRING 2019 EDITION

Spring is finally here! We are grateful for sunshine and warmer weather, and for the feeling of a fresh
start that a new season can often bring.
We want to thank everyone that prayed for Haiti, and House of Hope specifically, during the
tumultuous unrest in February. Tensions were very high over political corruption and crippling inflation.
We will never claim to fully understand the complexities of the ongoing situation in Haiti; as privileged
Americans, we simply cannot. What we do know is that there has long been immense struggle for
Haitian people in a variety of ways, and the sudden increase in prices of everyday goods plus the
drastic devaluation of the gourde (Haitian currency) only exacerbates that. We realize that the
travel advisories, reports of violent protests, and startling photos or videos of riots can cause many to
suppose that Haiti and her people are dangerous. During our years of working in Haiti we have
witnessed, and also been the recipients, of many acts of kindness and selflessness. The real Haiti is full
of kind, loving, and generous people that would stand up and give you their own chair with full
knowledge that there are none left in the room. Those of you that have visited Haiti have likely
experienced their kindness as well.
We will always encourage personal discretion and judgement regarding travel, of course, but we just
wanted to pause and share this. Haiti is a beautiful, complicated, wonderful, complex place. Let us all
continue to pray for peace and lasting resolution, and for the wonderful people that we have come to
know and love.
We hope you have a beautiful spring!

With love, Paul and Kate
