How does Sleep Paralysis Occur?
Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious bur unable to move and speak. It occurs when a person
passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep. During the transitions, a person may be unable to move or speak
for a few seconds up to a few minutes. A few may also feel pressure or a sense of choking. Sleep paralysis may
accompany other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is an overpowering need to sleep caused by a
problem with the brain’s ability to regulate sleep.
The factors that may be linked to sleep paralysis include lack of sleep, change of sleep schedule, sleeping
on the back, other sleep problems such as narcolepsy or nighttime leg cramps and use of certain medications.
Sleep paralysis usually occurs at one of two times. If it occurs when a person is falling asleep, it’s called
hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis. If it happens when a person is waking up from sleep, it’s called
hypnopompic or pasdormital sleep paralysis.
Hypnagogic sleep paralysis happens as a person falls asleep and the body slowly relaxes. The person
usually becomes less aware, so he/she does not notice the change. However, if a person remains or becomes
aware while falling asleep, he/she may notice that he/she cannot move or speak.
Hypnopompic sleep paralysis happens during sleep. The body alternates between REM (rapid eye
movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. One cycle of REM and NREM sleep lasts about 90
minutes. NREM sleep occurs first and takes up to 75% of overall sleep time. During NREM sleep, the sleeps
shifts to REM. The eyes move quickly and dreams occur, but the rest of the body remains very relaxed. The
muscles are “turned off” during REM sleep. If a person becomes aware before the REM cycle has finished, he/she
may notice that he/she cannot move or speak.

Many people prefer electric to gasoline cars. However, apart from the advantages, electric cars have their
disadvantages.
The foremost advantage of electric cars is that they don’t require gas. With minimal gas usage come great
savings. However, a certain type of electric car needs gas in case the battery runs out or if we travel long
distances. However, the amount of fill ups per year will be much lesser for an electric vehicle, as we can plug the
car. Electricity is much cheaper than gas, and the savings will be huge.
Electric cars don’t have emissions. They are even better than hybrids in this regard. Hybrids running on
gas give off emissions, while electric cars are totally 100% free of pollutants.
Furthermore, safety is a big concern with these vehicles. However, the liquid batteries actually have an
impact better than a fully made gas car and can help even more in the event of an accident.
On the contrary, the first disadvantage of electric cars is price. Electric car batteries are not cheap and the
better the quality of the battery, the more we have to pay.
Even though it is a quiet ride, silence can be seen as a disadvantage. Other drivers/pedestrians are used to
hearing cars behind or besides them and they can’t do so with an electric car approaching. Considering the pros
and cons above, we should think hard before buying electric cars.
33. How are electric cars better than hybrid cars?
A. They are cheaper
B. They don’t need gas

35. What makes electric cars expensive?
A. The batteries
B. The gas used for a long distance
C. Their spare parts
D. The electricity
E. The outlets
36. What is the main idea of paragraph 6?
A. Emissions in electric gas
B. The high price of electric cars
C. The foremost advantage of electric cars
D. The disadvantage of the quietness electric cars

37. “The foremost advantage of electric cars is that they don’t require gas.” (Paragraph 2). What is similar meaning of
the underlined word?
