INTRODUCTION METHODOLOGY
 The aim is to build an indirect solar dryer to dry food products in
appropriate conditions for safe store.
 Investigation the Feasibility of the phase change material (PCM) to Insert Block Diagram
improve the performance of our solar dryer.
 To store excess solar energy and release it when the energy availability
is inadequate or not available for solar drying process.
 To Determines the effect on dryer efficiency by introducing hot air and by
increasing its mass flow rate by introducing forced convection is
determined. Fig 2:

OPERATIONAL PRINCIPLE
 The solar dryer works on the principle of convection heat transfer. Due to BENEFITS
the solar rays the air inside the drying chamber gets heated which takes Source of Solar Energy
the moisture present inside the food material away, which results in drying Solar energy in coastal region available for 8 to 9 months in a year with average
sunshine hours ranging from 6.5 to 8 h per day. So that available temperature for
of material.
the drying is 450-500W/m2 per day. The drying purpose get more amount of energy
 The Efficiency of solar dryer depends upon the incident solar energy. The source is available.
sunrays directed on the glass plate are mostly transmitted inside the Reduction in drying periods
chamber. Generally by using the traditional method for drying it is possible to dry the
fish for 4 - 5 days but by using solar fish drier it is possible to dry the fish
 The chamber has the absorber plate or the black body which absorbs
within 1- 2 days.
96% of the energy incident. As the energy is absorbed the temperature Maintain nutrition & hygienic value of product
of the black body increases. As the dryer is the closed chamber so that no foreign particles will enter in
 It tends to increase the temperature of air inside the chamber and this chamber such as insect, larva, birds and animals. The nutritious and hygienic
value of the product can be maintained.
creates the Greenhouse effect as the temperature of the chamber
increases. As temperature of air increases it takes the moisture present
inside the food material with it.

 The efficiency of the solar dryer can be increased by increasing mass flow rate of air by forced convection.
 The Solar dryers with PCM storage achieve the 55-60% efficiency as compared to conventional solar dryers having 40-45%.
