124. A love that is weak or infirm, incapable of
accepting marriage as a challenge to be taken up and
fought for, reborn, renewed and reinvented until
death, cannot sustain a great commitment. It will
succumb to the culture of the ephemeral that
prevents a constant process of growth. Yet
“promising love for ever is possible when we per-
ceive a plan bigger than our own ideas and
undertakings, a plan which sustains us and enables
us to surrender our future entirely to the one we
love”. If this love is to overcome all trials and
remain faithful in the face of everything, it needs the
gift of grace to strengthen and elevate it. In the
words of Saint Robert Bellarmine, “the fact that one
man unites with one woman in an indissoluble
bond, and that they remain inseparable despite
every kind of difficulty, even when there is no
longer hope for children, can only be the sign of a
great mystery”.
125. Marriage is likewise a friendship marked by
passion, but a passion always directed to an ever
more stable and intense union. This is because
“marriage was not instituted solely for the
procreation of children” but also that mutual love
“might be properly expressed, that it should grow
and mature”. This unique friendship between a man
and a woman acquires an all-encompassing
character only within the conjugal union. Precisely
as all-encompassing, this union is also exclusive,
faithful and open to new life. It shares everything in
constant mutual respect. The Second Vatican
Council echoed this by stating that “such a love,
bringing together the human and the divine, leads
the partners to a free and mutual self-giving,
experienced in tenderness and action, and
permeating their entire lives”.

124.Un amor débil o enfermo, incapaz de aceptar el
matrimonio como un desafío que require luchar, renacer,
reinventarse y empezar siempre de nuevo hasta la
muerte, no puede sostener un nivel alto de compromiso.
Cede a la cultura de lo provisorio, que impide un
proceso constante de crecimiento. Pero « prometer un
amor para siempre es posible cuando se descubre un
plan que sobrepasa los propios proyectos, que nos
sostiene y nos permite entregar totalmente nuestro
futuro a la persona amada ». Que ese amor pueda
atravesar todas las pruebas y mantenerse fiel en contra
de todo, supone el don de la gracia que lo fortalece y lo
eleva. Como decía san Roberto Belarmino: « El hecho de
que uno solo se una con una sola en un lazo
indisoluble,de modo que no puedan separarse,
cualesquiera sean las dificultades, y aun cuando se haya
perdido la esperanza de la prole, esto no puede ocurrir
sin un gran misterio ».
125. El matrimonio, además, es una amistad
que incluye las notas propias de la pasión, pero
orientada siempre a una unión cada vez más firme
e intensa. Porque « no ha sido instituido solamente
para la procreación » sino para que el amor
mutuo « se manifieste, progrese y madure según
un orden recto ». Esta amistad peculiar entre
un hombre y una mujer adquiere un carácter
totalizante que sólo se da en la unión conyugal.
Precisamente por ser totalizante, esta unión también
es exclusiva, fiel y abierta a la generación. Se
comparte todo, aun la sexualidad, siempre con
el respeto recíproco. El Concilio Vaticano II lo
expresó diciendo que « un tal amor, asociando a
la vez lo humano y lo divino, lleva a los esposos a
un don libre y mutuo de sí mismos, comprobado
por sentimientos y actos de ternura, e impregna
toda su vida ».

1. Have you ever being fishing all night long… without catching anything? Probably, we all
have had some painful experience, some moments loaded with a sense of personal failure in our
spiritual or apostolic life when we ask ourselves where have we gone wrong and what can we do now.
Maybe this happened in a concrete activity, or after making a sincere effort to help a person, or just
trying to modify some aspect of my personal behavior. Pope St John Paul II exhorted:
There is a temptation which perennially besets every spiritual journey and pastoral
work: that of thinking that the results depend on our ability to act and to plan. God of
course asks us really to cooperate with his grace, and therefore invites us to invest all our resources of
intelligence and energy in serving the cause of the Kingdom. But it is fatal to forget that without Christ
we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). It is prayer which roots us in this truth. It constantly reminds us of the primacy of Christ and, in union with him,
the primacy of the interior life and of holiness. When this principle is not respected, is it any wonder that pastoral plans come to nothing and
leave us with a disheartening sense of frustration? We then share the experience of the disciples in the Gospel story of the miraculous catch of
fish: We have toiled all night and caught nothing (NMI 38).
Sooner or later we learn that God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength (1 Cor 1:
25). And this discovery happens, usually, through a painful experience, like the fishing all night without catching anything. Even in a not
precisely evangelical context, Michael Jordan, the iconic basketball player, said: You cannot be a great winner without having to experience
struggles and losses. How you use your losses says everything about who you are.
Perhaps, one of the most painful experiences is to see how many of those who walk by your side abandon the path, captivated by the
enticements of this world, suffocated by the difficulties, or victims of fear, as Jesus explains in the parable of the sower. That is what St Paul
writes to Timothy: You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes (2Tim 1: 15).
2. What are the signs, the indicators that the Holy Spirit is really making use of our suffering to purify us and to draw us to
Himself?
* Firstly, these experiences always bring about a sense of awareness of one’s sinfulness.
If we feel a sense of self-righteousness and spiritual superiority over others, it is probably a sign that we have neither seen God nor known Him,
otherwise we would have seen the truth about ourselves: we are sinners like the rest of humanity before Him and yet loved by Him
unconditionally.
St Peter had this reaction when he encountered the Christ’s power and holiness. He thought he knew better than Jesus where to make a catch
of fish. It was with reluctance that he obeyed the Lord in putting down the nets, perhaps just to prove Him wrong. When Peter saw the big
catch that filled the two boats to sinking point, he fell at the knees of Jesus saying: Leave me, Lord; I am a sinful man. Anyone who encounters
the holiness of God and His glory will feel very inadequate about himself.
* Secondly the awareness of our sinfulness is accompanied by gratitude and a joyful acceptance of God’s forgiveness. The Second
Reading is an enthusiastic canticle of gratitude: Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, wisdom and strength, honor
and glory and blessing.
Our humble awareness of sin is immediately followed by the awareness and active welcoming of God’s forgiveness. Jesus assured Peter: Do not
be afraid! This experience was described by St Paul when he wrote to Timothy: He judged me faithful and appointed me to his service, even
though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and a man of violence. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,
and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners
– of whom I am the foremost (1 Tim 1: 12-15).
If we have received His infinite and undeserving mercy, we will be as grateful as Peter, we will have nothing but gratitude because we will know
that who we are today, what we have and what we do is not just the result of our efforts, but essentially God’s gift. This is the feeling the
Apostles have in today’s First Reading: As is the holy Spirit that God has given to those who obey him.
* Finally, a consequence of the overwhelming experience of God’s mercy is the call to serve Him and our immediate response to that call:
From now on it is men you will catch. What is most amazing is that God has chosen us in spite of our unworthiness and sinfulness.
If we are aware of God’s mercy and forgiveness in our lives, we immediately want to be the apostles of mercy and love, the messengers of the
Good News to all of humanity. Thus, if we have no desire to spread His love and mercy, it means that we either have forgotten our encounter
with Him or we have never been conscious of a radical experience of His love. That is why we rely only on our intellectual knowledge or just on
an act of our will, which of course does not guarantee our perseverance. What is it that confirms Peter as an apostle? What sustains us as
apostles? One thing only: that we received mercy (1 Tim 1:12-16).
In a spirit of prayer and commitment we must listen carefully to the words: Behold, I am at the door and knock (Rev 3:20). God is looking at
us intently, and He takes any opportunity whatsoever. Think of the fishermen, one moment for God to slip in and before you know it, you are
an apostle, a disciple, a prophet, you give your life to your brothers and to Him.

The famous millionaire John D. Rockefeller was asked by a reporter what amount of money was enough to make him happy, replied with, Just
one dollar more. Nothing on Earth is ever going to satisfy us. But if you ask anyone who has made Jesus the Lord of their life, they will tell you
that they are blessed beyond anything they could have ever asked or imagined. A life apart from Jesus will always leave you lacking, but a life
centered on Jesus is full of abundance.
A life of service is demanding, but it is really worthwhile: After encountering the divine wisdom and power of Christ, Peter and his coworkers
no longer followed their own intellectual reasoning and knowledge; instead, they left everything behind and followed the Lord. They became
conscious that their humble efforts will bear fruit exactly when, where and how the Holy Spirit has determined. Without a
radical personal encounter with the Lord and renewal of such encounter, our faith will be weak. In fact, some of us fail to realize that this
encounter not temporary, but permanent. This explains why there is a lack of enthusiasm, conviction and joy to proclaim the Good News.
In the words of Pope Francis:
The greatest miracle Jesus wrought for Simon and the other disappointed and tired fishermen was not so much to fill the
net with fish but to help them not to fall victims of disappointment and discouragement in face of failures. He opened them
to become heralds and witnesses of His word and of the Kingdom of God. And the disciples’ answer was quick and total:
‘And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him (Feb 10, 2019).
3. Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep. Follow me.
This command sounds great and idealistic around a warm fire on the beach, but it becomes a lot more challenging when you are actually
dealing with the sheep. Being in relationship with Jesus means we must love his sheep, even when the sheep are not particularly loveable. How
do you love the sheep who gets on your nerves, the sheep who is so needy, the sheep who broke their promise to you? Remember that Jesus
also called them by name. They are not your sheep; they are Jesus’ sheep. Therefore, all kind of efforts should be carried out to spread
tenderness and sensitivity first and especially to those closest to us:
I would encourage you to pray in such a way that it all comes down to a feeling of home. I have told you that you
should be truly brothers and sisters, treating each other with marvelous respect and care. You should awaken in your
religious life, each day, in your hearts, this feeling of home, this family affection, this intimate tenderness.
Also impart this grace to one another in such a way that, speaking to each other, in whatever way it be –devout,
religious or mystical–, must not be with harshness, with stiff feeling, but with that feeling that responds to a model
reality that is Heaven itself, at whose head is the Most Holy Trinity
(Our Father Founder. En el Corazón del Padre).
Following Jesus pushes us to do what we may not especially want to do Peter’s love will lead to the cross. When you grow old, you will stretch
out your hands, is a reference to stretching one’s arms on the patibulum, the horizontal bar of a Roman cross.
Jesus meets the fishermen when they need help and he helps them in an unexpected way. These fishermen would have been happy with a
basket of fish to sell in the market, but now their nets are breaking and they’re working harder than ever just to remain afloat. Like the
fishermen, we come asking for a little help and sometimes get overwhelmed by the result: God himself asks us for help through the suffering
and the dreams of our neighbors!
God’s love is bigger than we imagined. Indeed, Jesus comes to us when we need help, and through experiences with his Word, the Eucharist,
some people we find in our path…and especially with His calling after some unfruitful night. This help may not provide the result we are
looking for; we need to be prepared for surprises along the way. Yes, he allows the tiniest of things, seemingly insignificant, to become greater
than anything we could have ever imagined.
St Peter cooperated with the grace of God by putting down the nets. When we cooperate with His grace like the apostles, He will show forth His
glory and power in our weakness.
How can we cooperate with His grace and not allow the grace of God given to us to be received in vain?

First, simply by not casting the nets on the left side of the boat. That is, not taking initiatives that have nothing to do with the Kingdom
of Heaven. And second, being aware that we are always feeding some flock; we necessarily have to choose: either feeding His lambs or feeding
our own crazy goats; to nurture the spiritual health of our fellow human beings or to nourish our instincts. The key is to acknowledge that we
cannot avoid this challenging shepherding dilemma.

1. ¿Alguna vez has estado pescando toda la noche... sin lograr pescar nada?
Probablemente, todos hemos tenido alguna experiencia dolorosa, alguna sensación de fracaso
personal en nuestra vida espiritual o apostólica y nos preguntamos qué no hicimos bien y qué
podemos hacer ahora. Tal fue vez en una actividad concreta, o después de hacer un esfuerzo sincero
para ayudar a una persona, o simplemente intentar modificar algún aspecto de mi comportamiento
personal. El Papa San Juan Pablo II nos exhortaba:
Hay una tentación que insidia siempre todo camino espiritual y la acción pastoral
misma: pensar que los resultados dependen de nuestra capacidad de hacer y
programar. Ciertamente, Dios nos pide una colaboración real a su gracia y, por tanto, nos invita a
utilizar todos los recursos de nuestra inteligencia y capacidad operativa en nuestro servicio a la causa
del Reino. Pero no se ha de olvidar que, sin Cristo no podemos hacer nada. (Jn 15: 5). La oración nos hace vivir precisamente en esta verdad.
Nos recuerda constantemente la primacía de Cristo y, en relación con él, la primacía de la vida interior y de la santidad. Cuando no se respeta
este principio, ¿ha de sorprender que los proyectos pastorales lleven al fracaso y dejen en el alma un humillante sentimiento de frustración?
Hagamos, pues, la experiencia de los discípulos en el episodio evangélico de la pesca milagrosa: Maestro, hemos estado bregando toda la
noche y no hemos pescado nada (NMI 38).
Tarde o temprano nos damos cuenta de que la necedad de Dios es más sabia que la sabiduría humana, y la debilidad de Dios es más fuerte
que la fuerza humana (1 Co 1:25). Y este descubrimiento ocurre, generalmente, a través de una experiencia dolorosa, como el pescar toda la
noche sin atrapar nada. Incluso en un contexto no precisamente evangélico, Michael Jordan, el icónico jugador de baloncesto, dijo: No se
puede ser un gran ganador sin experimentar luchas y derrotas. La forma en que utilizas tus derrotas dice todo sobre quién eres.
Tal vez, una de las experiencias más dolorosas es ver cómo muchos de los que caminan a tu lado abandonan el camino, cautivados por las
tentaciones de este mundo, asfixiados por las dificultades o víctimas del miedo, como explica Cristo en la parábola del sembrador. Eso es
también lo que San Pablo escribe a Timoteo: Como ya sabes, todos los de la provincia de Asia me abandonaron; entre ellos, Figelo y
Hermógenes (2Tim 1: 15).
2. ¿Cuáles son los signos, los indicadores de que el Espíritu Santo realmente está haciendo uso de nuestro sufrimiento
para purificarnos y atraernos a Él?
* En primer lugar, estas experiencias siempre producen un estado de conciencia de nuestra pecaminosidad.
Si lo que sentimos es una especie de autocomplacencia y superioridad espiritual sobre los demás, probablemente sea una señal de que no
hemos visto a Dios ni le hemos conocido, de lo contrario, habríamos visto la verdad sobre nosotros mismos: soy un pecador, como toda la
humanidad, ante Él. Y sin embargo soy amado incondicionalmente por Él.
San Pedro tuvo esta reacción cuando se encontró con el poder y la santidad de Cristo. Pensó que sabía mejor que Jesús dónde hacer una buena
captura de pescado. Fue con renuencia como obedeció a Cristo al echar las redes, tal vez sólo para demostrarle que estaba equivocado. Cuando
Pedro vio la gran captura que llenó los dos botes hasta casi hundirse, cayó de rodillas de Jesús diciendo: Aparta de mí, Señor; soy un hombre
pecador. Cualquiera que se encuentre ante la santidad de Dios y su gloria se sentirá muy indigno y avergonzado.
* En segundo lugar, el reconocimiento de nuestro pecado está acompañado por gratitud y una gozosa acogida del perdón de Dios. La
Segunda Lectura es un cántico entusiasta de gratitud: El Cordero que ha sido inmolado es digno de recibir el poder y la riqueza, la sabiduría,
la fuerza y el honor, la gloria y la alabanza.
Nuestra conciencia humilde del pecado es seguida inmediatamente por la conciencia y la acogida activa del perdón de Dios. Cristo reafirmó a
Pedro: ¡No tengas miedo!
Esa experiencia fue también descrita por San Pablo cuando escribe a Timoteo: Doy gracias a Cristo Jesús nuestro Señor, que me ha
fortalecido, porque me tuvo por fiel, poniéndome en el ministerio; aun habiendo sido yo antes blasfemo, perseguidor y agresor. Sin
embargo, se me mostró misericordia porque lo hice por ignorancia en mi incredulidad. Pero la gracia de nuestro Señor fue más que
abundante, con la fe y el amor que se hallan en Cristo Jesús. Palabra fiel y digna de ser aceptada por todos: Cristo Jesús vino al mundo para
salvar a los pecadores, entre los cuales yo soy el primero (1 Tim 1:12-15).
Si recibimos Su infinita e inmerecida misericordia, estaremos tan agradecidos como Pedro, no tendremos sino gratitud porque sabemos que lo
que somos hoy, lo que tenemos y lo que hacemos no es simplemente el resultado de nuestros esfuerzos, sino esencialmente don de Dios. Este
es el sentimiento que los apóstoles tienen en la Primera Lectura de hoy: Es el Espíritu Santo lo que Dios ha dado a quienes le obedecen.
* Finalmente, una consecuencia de la intensa experiencia de la misericordia de Dios es el llamado a servirle y nuestra respuesta inmediata
a ese llamado: De ahora en adelante, serás pescador de hombres. Lo más asombroso es que Dios nos ha elegido a pesar de nuestra indignidad
y nuestro pecado.
Si somos conscientes de la misericordia y el perdón de Dios en nuestras vidas, inmediatamente querremos ser apóstoles de la misericordia y el
amor, mensajeros de la Buena Nueva para toda la humanidad. Por lo tanto, si es que no sentimos el deseo de extender su amor y misericordia,
significa que, o bien hemos olvidado nuestro encuentro con Él, o nunca hemos sido conscientes de una experiencia radical de Su amor.
Es por eso que confiamos sólo en nuestro conocimiento intelectual o en un acto de nuestra voluntad, lo que por supuesto no garantiza nuestra
perseverancia. ¿Qué es lo que confirma a Pedro como apóstol? ¿Qué nos sostiene como apóstoles? Sólo una cosa: que hemos recibido
misericordia (1 Tim 1: 12-16).
En espíritu de oración y compromiso debemos escuchar atentamente las palabras: Mira, estoy llamando a la puerta (Ap 3:20). Dios nos mira
atentamente, y aprovecha cualquier oportunidad. Pensemos en aquellos pescadores, en un momento Dios entra en nosotros y antes de que te
des cuenta, eres un apóstol, un discípulo, un profeta, que entregas tu vida a tus hermanos y a Él.
Un reportero preguntó al famoso millonario John D. Rockefeller qué cantidad de dinero necesitaba para hacerle feliz, y contestó: Me basta un
dólar más. Nada en esta Tierra nos llega a satisfacer. Pero si preguntas a alguien que ha hecho de Jesús el Señor de su vida, te dirá que ha sido
bendecido más allá de lo que haya podido pedir o imaginar. Una vida lejos de Cristo siempre nos dejará vacíos, pero una vida centrada en Él es
plena y fecunda.
Una vida de servicio es exigente, pero realmente vale la pena: Después de conocer la sabiduría y el poder divinos de Cristo, Pedro y sus
compañeros de trabajo ya no siguieron su propio razonamiento y conocimiento intelectual; sino que dejaron todo y siguieron a Jesús. Se
hicieron conscientes de que sus esfuerzos humildes darían frutos exactamente cuando, donde y como el Espíritu Santo
haya determinado. Sin un encuentro personal radical con el Señor y la renovación de ese encuentro, nuestra fe será débil. De hecho,
algunos de nosotros no nos damos cuenta de que este encuentro no es temporal, sino permanente. Esto explica por qué tenemos falta de
entusiasmo, convicción y alegría para proclamar la Buena Nueva.
En palabras del Papa Francisco:
El mayor milagro realizado por Jesús para Simón y los demás pescadores decepcionados y cansados, no es tanto la red
llena de peces, como haberlos ayudado a no caer víctimas de la decepción y el desaliento ante las derrotas. Les abrió el
horizonte de convertirse en anunciadores y testigos de su palabra y del reino de Dios. Y la respuesta de los discípulos fue
rápida y total: “Llevaron a tierra las barcas y dejando todo lo siguieron” (10 Feb 2019).
3. Apacienta mis corderos. Apacienta mis ovejas. Sígueme.
Este mandato suena como algo maravilloso e idealista al oírlo junto a un fuego cálido en la playa, pero resulta mucho más exigente cuando en
la práctica estás en contacto con las ovejas. Estar en relación con Jesús significa que debemos amar a sus ovejas, incluso cuando las ovejas no
son particularmente adorables. ¿Cómo amas a la oveja que te pone de los nervios, a la oveja que está siempre necesitada, a la oveja que rompió
su promesa? Recordemos también que Jesús las llama por su nombre. No son tus ovejas; son las ovejas de Cristo.

Por tanto, hemos de realizar todo tipo de esfuerzos para sembrar la ternura y la sensibilidad, primero, y especialmente entre los más cercanos a
nosotros:

Yo os animaría a que hagáis de tal modo vuestra oración, que se reduzca a un sentimiento de hogar. Ya os he dicho que
debéis ser verdaderamente hermanos y hermanas, trataros con maravilloso respeto y cuidado. Debéis despertar en vuestra
vida religiosa, cada día, en vuestros corazones, este sentido de hogar, este cariño familiar, esta ternura íntima
Impartíos también entre vosotros esta gracia de tal modo que, al hablaros mutuamente, cualquiera que sea la forma –devota,
religiosa o mística-, debe ser no con cortedad, con sentimiento artrósico, sino con ese sentimiento que responde a una
realidad modélica que es el cielo mismo en cuya cabecera está la Santísima Trinidad (Nuestro padre Fundador. En el
Corazón del Padre).

El seguir a Cristo nos empuja a hacer lo que quizás no queramos hacer. El amor llevó a Pedro a la cruz. Cuando seas viejo, extenderás tus
manos y te ceñirá otro, y te llevará a donde no quieras, es una referencia al estiramiento de los brazos en el patibulum, el brazo horizontal de
la cruz romana.
Cristo se encuentra con los pescadores cuando necesitan ayuda y les ayuda de una manera inesperada. Esos pescadores se habrían estarían
contentado con una canasta de pescados para vender en el mercado, pero ahora sus redes se están rompiendo y están trabajando más duro que
nunca para mantenerse a flote. Al igual que los pescadores, pedimos un poco de ayuda y, a veces, nos vemos abrumados por el resultado: ¡Dios
mismo nos pide ayuda a través del sufrimiento y los sueños de nuestro prójimo!
El amor de Dios es más grande de lo que podemos imaginar. De hecho, Jesús viene a nosotros cuando necesitamos ayuda y, a través de las
experiencias con su Palabra, la Eucaristía, algunas personas que encontramos en nuestro camino... y especialmente con su llamado después de
una noche infructuosa. Esta ayuda puede no proporcionar el resultado que estábamos buscando; tenemos que estar preparados para las
sorpresas en el camino. Sí, Él permite que las cosas más pequeñas, aparentemente insignificantes, se hagan más grandes que cualquier cosa
que pudiéramos haber imaginado.
San Pedro cooperó con la gracia de Dios al echar las redes. Cuando cooperamos con su gracia como los apóstoles, Él hace visible Su gloria y
poder en nuestra debilidad.
¿Cómo podemos cooperar con Su gracia y no permitir que la gracia de Dios que nos ha sido dada sea recibida en vano?

En primer lugar, simplemente no echando las redes en el lado izquierdo del barco. Es decir, no tomando iniciativas que no tengan
nada que ver con el Reino de los Cielos. Y después, siendo conscientes de que siempre estamos alimentando un rebaño; tenemos que elegir,
necesariamente: alimentar a Sus corderos o alimentar a nuestras cabras locas; nutrir la salud espiritual de nuestros semejantes o alimentar
nuestros instintos. La clave es reconocer que no podemos evitar este desafiante dilema pastoral.
