Injection moulding:
Injection moulding is a manufacturing process for producing parts by injecting
molten material into a mould. Injection moulding can be performed with a host of
materials mainly including metals, glasses, elastomers, confections, and most
commonly thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers.The main body of the pump
is created using injection moulding.

The Material granules are fed via a hopper into a heated barrel, melted using
heater bands and the frictional action of a screw barrel.The plastic is then
injected through a nozzle into a mould of the impeller pump where it cools and
hardens to the shape of the pump mould. The mould tool is mounted on a
movable platen – when the part has solidified, the platen opens and the part is
ejected out using ejector pins
.
CNC punching:
A turret punch or turret press is a type of punch press used for metal forming by
punching. Punching, and press work in general, is a process well suited to mass
production. However the initial tooling costs, of both the machine and the
job-specific press tool, are high.In the Am-tech impeller pump the metal disk is
Cnc punched.

Machine screw production:


Machining is only used on unique designs or with screws too small to be made
any other way. The machining process is exact, but too time consuming,
wasteful, and expensive. The bulk of all screws are mass manufactured using the
thread rolling method.

End of life disposal

A product with a long life uses less material than several short-lived
replacements. This is good for the environment.One way of extending product life
is using better materials – like stronger materials or materials that resist
corrosion. However, a longer life also means that the manufacturer will sell less
replacement products. Another way is through design to allow their life to be
extended by maintenance.if it is essential to dispose of a product in landfill,
ideally the material should be
biodegradable.

Consumer rights and legislation

Good design and manufacturing processes are essential to ensure you meet
these technical and legal requirements.Under the
Consumer Rights Act 2015 ll products must be ‘fit for
purpose’, be of satisfactory quality and fit their description.
This means that products must fulfil the purpose the
customer has been led to expect and the reasons that led
them to buy it.

I bought this to drain out some pools of water that had accumulated beneath my
apartment in Spain. I needed to build a base to stand this on and left the drill running to
pump out the water.It worked OK for a while but eventually ground to a halt.Perhaps I
was expecting too much from a tiny pump.

The main body of the pump is made of a


strong injection moulded polymer(ABS or
Polypropylene).There are noticeable
plastic extrusions on the outside of the
body to provide structural support.The two
Rectangular apertures on the base of the
pump are most likely intended to clamp
the pump to a surface if required.

I removed the four screws on the face of the


pump .This allowed me to seperate the two
halves of the housing to reveal a rubber o ring
gasket,this is used to seal the connection
between the two halves of the pump and
prevent fluid leaking.The central rubber
bearing(made using injection moulding) is
designed to prevent friction and seal the
central cavity which holds the impeller rod of
the pump.
The impeller unit comprises of three parts

1. A steel rod, designed to connect to the jaws of the


drill. It is either fabricated by a CNC cutter or or is
purchased as a prefabricated part which matches the
specified brief of length and diameter.

2.An impeller, custom made for the pump.It's likely made


of neoprene rubber (to improve the rate of degradation
compared to natural rubber).The process of
manufacturing is likely injection moulding.

3.A white plastic mould, used to connect the impeller to


the steel rod.It is likely injection moulded from ABS.

Wolfcraft 2202000 Water Pump

The wolfcraft pump is one of the best reviewed pumps on amazon.Unlike other pumps
this pump has a lot more parts.Part(117710003)is a metal spacer I think this helps to
prevent the pump leaking.

This piece of aluminium is less than 1mm thick.Using a piece of aluminum increases
production costs as you will need a cnc puncher and sheet aluminium is quite

expensive.On the other hand it does make the pump less prone to leaks and better
quality in general.
116710029:Six torque screws,used to hold the body together,prefabricated by third party
manufacturer.

116610005: The rear body of the pump is made of a strong injection moulded polymer
(likely Polypropylene).The two circular holes on the base of the pump are most likely
intended to bolt the pump to a surface if required.

116610005: The face of the pump is made of a strong injection moulded polymer (likely
Polypropylene).The fluid inlet and outlet are integrated into the face of the pump itself.it
also comprises of a drill guard .not only does this improve the safety aspect of the pump
but also acts as a useful hand grip.

The main body is made of a polymer,which is widely recycled in the UK.The metal parts
can also be recycled or alternatively melted down.The rubber parts can be recycled.The
screws nuts and washers are standard components therefore can be reused or
recycled.There are few materials in the pump making it easy to recycle.The carbon
footprint is greatly reduced by standard and recycled components as they can be
reused in other products.The consideration of carbon footprint can affect the design of
the product, choosing materials that are highly recyclable but not as strong or
affective.This can lead to a shorter product life cycle resulting a higher carbon footprint.
