Course Description and Prerequisites

This course is an advanced treatment of modern petroleum production engineering encompassing flow
assurance; well deliverability; and diagnosis of well performance. Production and distribution of
hydrocarbons from petroleum reservoirs require knowledge of flow of multiphase fluids and heat
transfer between the fluids and their surroundings. The course provides basic theoretical framework for
multiphase flow and heat transfer in wellbores, production logging and well performance diagnosis by
downhole sensors, and artificial lift.

Learning Outcomes or Course Objectives

The goal of this course is to develop understanding and skills of modeling fluid flow and heat transfer in
the various components of multiphase production systems. The course will present advanced
techniques for modeling well deliverability and multiphase flow in wellbores and pipelines. Special
emphasis is given to the components of multiphase production downstream of the sandface, including
flow assurance, performance monitoring by downhole sensors, and problem diagnosis by production
logging. Well performance improvement by artificial lift will be addressed.
