EMH222 FLUID DYNAMICS

ASSIGNMENT 1

(SUBMIT BEFORE 3 APRIL 2015)

1. A wide moving belt passes through a container of a viscous liquid. The belt move
vertically upward with a constant velocity, Vo, as shown in Figure 1. Because of
viscous forces the belt picks up a film of fluid of thickness h. Gravity tends to make
the fluid drain down the belt. Use the Navier-Stoke equations to determine an
expression for the average velocity of the fluid film as it is dragged up the belt.
Assume that the flow is laminar, steady and fully developed.

obtain the values of a and b. Determine also the displacement thickness, momentum
thickness and total skin drag coefficient in term of Reynolds number at varies x-
direction. Compare your answers with the exact values of Blasius for the laminar
boundary layer.

given by:
C F  0.073 Re 1L/ 5

(ii) Using the turbulent flow boundary layer equation in Q3[i] above, obtain a general
expression for boundary layer growth on a flat plate and determine also the
distance from the leading edge where the shear stress is equal to 15Pa when the
air flowing at 15m/s. (Take the density of air = 1.2kg/m3 and viscosity= 1.8 x 10-
