The Partition of India: Triumph of Independence, Tragedy of Division

The reason as to why the team members made the educated decision on choosing the

Partition of India as our topic is due to the fact that it suits the requirements for the project as the

partition is both a triumph and tragedy. The British rule over India began in 1858 when the rule of

East India Company was transferred to the Crown of Queen Victoria. However this time period

of ruling only lasted a meer 100 years. After World War two weakened the stance of the British

Empire, India sought it as an opportunity to increase the demand for independence. In 1947 India

successfully gained independence from The British Empire under the the condition that India

would be separated into two individual republics, resulting in the birth of Pakistan. The topic of

the Partition of India is important as it lead to the creation of a new nation. It provides a window

into history that portrays the struggles that the Indian Empire faced.

The majority of the information found for this project was collected from reliable online

sources. Online we were able to find both primary and secondary sources. Primary images were

useful in the aspect of providing visual references. One source that was particularly useful in

terms of finding sources was The National Archives.gov, the source provided us with visual

documents that were written at the time of the partition. We used BBC’s website as a secondary

source because it delved into the reasons behind the partition and the chaos that followed. These

sources helped provide us an understanding of the conflict the partition created.

resources used for each fact strongly support our thesis. During the compilation of our Annotated

Bibliography, we encountered difficulty in finding primary sources during the same time period.

After we were able to find reliable primary sources, annotating each one was challenging due the

absence of some crucial information required to complete cituation in the correct manner. The

team members went above and beyond in overcoming each obstacle of this project to satisfy the

needs of every assignment given.

Our topic—The Partition of India greatly relates to the theme of triumph or tragedy. The

partition of the country was something that the people had wanted for years, not knowing what

the consequences it would bring. It was a great victory as it brought about two newfound,

independent republics. Nevertheless, the triumph was controversial considering the fact that it

created conflict between two religions and accelerated the gap and hatred between them. The

partition was a key event in both countries’ history as it was essentially the creation of the two

independent countries. Gaining their independence did not only mean the arbitrary division of

political borders, it was the division of two religions, two cultures and two peoples who had been

intermingled for thousands of years. It is the chief reason behind the the tension that still persists

between the countries today. The partition casted a long shadow over the countries involved.
