II. Program and Highlights of Activities (Overview of the Seminar)
A geographic information system (GIS) is a framework for gathering,
managing, and analyzing data. Rooted in the science of geography, GIS integrates
many types of data. It analyzes spatial location and organizes layers of information into
visualizations using maps and 3D scenes. With this unique capability, GIS reveals
deeper insights into data, such as patterns, relationships, and situations—helping users
make smarter decisions.

During the seminar, Engr. Peralta had discussed various topics on GIS which
includes the following: what is GIS, how a GIS functions, its process and how to model
and structure data, what can you do with it and its application. But before introducing
the GIS she differentiate first the data and information in which data are facts or details
from which information is derived. She also discussed about the information system
which can be simply defined as telephone directory. On the presentation, it was
explained clearly that Geographical Information System is a system designed for
capturing, storing, updating, manipulating and analysing different geographical data. It
is consist of information system and geographical position. It is a combination of
hardware and database engine and it display “geographical referenced information”.
Furthermore, GIS has key functions wherein data can be positioned by its own spatial
coordinates, input and organized, stored and retrieved, analysed and, modified and
analysed.

The GIS process was briefly but clearly explained with examples. GIS process
includes define problem, define GIS criteria, import or build datasets, GIS analysis,
output, and decision. Afterwards, a broader and more focused discussion on modelling
and structuring data followed. Representing spatial elements can be raster (pixel),
vector (polygons, lines, dots) and real world. Also, there are things that an individual
can do with GIS such as map locations, map quantities, map change, etc. Different GIS
application are also presented as the seminar approaches to end.

Lastly, since no one raise any question the certificate and token of appreciation
were then awarded to Engr. Janice F. Peralta for excellently imparting his knowledge
on Geographical Information System.

III. Implication to Professional Development
A. Contribution to Attendee’s Development
1. In relation to their specific discipline
Geographic Information System is a big help for problem-based learning and
research. GIS can give more knowledge about data analysis, mapping and statistics
concept and can be used as tool for better presentation of data in a spatial
environment.

2. In relation to their future career

GIS can provide a promising future career path since GIS touches many aspects
of both the public and private sectors and just about every industry imaginable. And
choosing these career enables an individual to make an impact by creating visual
graphic information and allow other people to see and understand their data in a
different way.
