El verbo 'To be' tiene una importancia especial en inglés. Se corresponde a los verbos españoles
"ser" y "estar". Dependiendo del sentido de la frase deduciremos de cuál de los dos se trata.
I am 21 / Yo tengo 21 años
- Para expresar las sensaciones también se emplea el verbo 'to be' y equivale al 'tener' español.
También para hablar sobre el tiempo atmosférico. En este caso se traduce por 'hacer'
El verbo to be se usa para dar otras descripciones, incluyendo la altura, el peso, y el color
de algo o de alguien.
I’m a doctor.
Soy doctor.
Liz is my sister.
Liz es mi hermana.
To be se usa para dar la hora y la fecha. Para dar la hora en inglés, siempre se ocupa la
tercera persona del singular (is, was).
It is three o’clock.
Son las tres.
Today is Wednesday.
Hoy es miércoles.
To be se usa para hablar de la ubicación de algo o de algún lugar.
Contracciones
Es muy común usar contracciones con to be en inglés. To be tiene tres tipos de contracciones en
presente, incluyendo dos variantes negativas y una variante afirmativa.
I'm a student.
Soy estudiante.
You're a doctor.
Eres doctor.
He's a teacher.
Es maestro.
We're friends.
Somos amigos.
They're writers.
Son escritores.
